  • Unless you have read the original biblical texts in aramaic, you cannot claim that the bible is any kind of truth or word of god. The King James Bible, the one most commonly referred to, bears little relationship to the original texts and even leaves out whole books of the old testament. It is a lie written to reflect the political agenda of its time.

  • @alpidrs What books of the Old Testament are left out?

  • @alpidrs Have you read the original texts? They aren't in aramaic. Aramaic is a language.

    New Testament: Mostly Greek.

    Old Testament: Hebrew

  • Minor nitpick here: the Scots didn't actually exist (and their ancestors weren't in what is not Scotland) at the time of the Roman Empire- the people living there at the time were those commonly referred to as Picts.

Also, incidentally, Hadrian's Wall does not follow the border of modern-day Scotland- it actually runs mostly if not entirely through the north of England. (I know from experience: I live in the region and have been there on several occasions!)

  • While it has a valid message of the breakdown of society (particularly in a time of pending economic collapse, riots in Greece, and the Occupy Wall Street protests, and guys like Saul Alinsky, William Ayers and Jeremiah Wright impact the goals of our president and his administration) this documentary does move a bit slowly and unevenly. The wordless opening 60 seconds was tedious, then got better

There are certainly parallels between decline of Rome, and decline of current Western culture.

  • Those saying bad about this. Why are you watching this? Either you're embarrassed to be Christian. Or you are looking for a way to live and searched How should i live. OR you just like persecuting Christians like the Romans If the embarrassed is your case Why be embarrassed? It is a blessing to be Christian! I love Jesus! If you want to know how to live i challenge you to finish this series. If you just like persecuting Christians then OK we survived the Romans. I love you all and write in love.

  • unless youre a christian - bla bla? man, you either only watched this with your ignorant glasses on, or you dont understand english.. the point of the video is that your thinking shapes your doing. agreed? so which thinking is the best way to think? i challenge you to watch the whole series and then make up your mind. dont be a clown.

  • Christians destroy the world.

  • @landsf how?

  • The Bible talks about people calling good evil, and evil good. Those of you who see no good in this beautiful work, and seek only to discredit the messenger, remind me of friends and family who are part of the so-called higher education elite. Shaeffer explains so much here, about the true ills of society, and offers solutions, from a biblical and historic basis, and all you can do is urinate on him. Your shallow, petty mentalities exemplify why our nation is going to hell in a handbasket!

  • Though Schaeffer's analysis of the confused human condition is on target, he so willfully distorts/leaves out critical historical junctures contradicting his presentation of the "absolute truth of the Bible/God" that it is frightening. There is nothing in the Bible that is clear or consistent -- because it comprises a record of HUMAN expression contentiously assembled by a fortuitous collection of HUMANS who chose only that which they knew RELATIVE to where they lived and what they experienced.

  • @kmarnycyt1 Do you think your particular philosophy has no context? How is it possible at all to be in possession of a philosophy without a particular context? While social constructivism may not be typical of average schools of philosophy, rest assured that whatever your perspective is, that is all it is. It is embodied (you are in a body) & embedded (in a cultural context). Why should you expect Biblical clarity & consistency in messy human contexts? Its messiness is its truth.

  • @jhall38 I agree with you. I must not have been very clear in my comment. I do think my particular philosophy has a context. I'm not criticizing the Bible for its messiness -- I accept and somewhat embrace its messiness. I was criticizing those like Schaefer who seem to think we can find certainty, consistency and ultimate truth in it. If there is such C,C&T, I'm "certainly" not gleaning any of it. And I'm highly skeptical of those who claim they are.

  • @kmarnycyt1 While I am a social constructivist, I do not have the certainty you seem to that there are no possibilities of certainty. If there are ultimate, absolute truths, perhaps they are to be discovered in messy contexts. This may be a call to consider other, relational ways of knowing. Take a look at "Women's Ways of Knowing" and Martin Buber on relationality. Remember that it is a nasty thing to be charged with absolute relativism. Others have spoken of "qualified relativism".

  • @kmarnycyt1 Perhaps you've been looking in the wrong direction. Buber's vision of the Bible seems fruitful. He sees it as a record of a conversation between God and His people. Perhaps if you could play the believing game for just a bit, you might get in on it. What I am pointing to is relational ways of knowing. The conversations in the Bible are fascinating and still seem to have a life of their own. Have you been considering absolute truth out of the context of relationships?

  • "Insufficient Basis for Building a Society"

That's a laugh. The Romans were the most successful society of the Ancient world by far.

The only reason Christianity is so prevalent today is because the Romans adopted Christianity and spread it to the corners of the empire as THE favored religion.

One small fact: Once the Romans adopted Christianity, the Roman Senators became the Cardinals of the Catholic Church. The Western Roman Empire was literally converted into the Catholic Church.

  • @slave290 You said, "The only reason Christianity is so prevalent today is because the Romans adopted Christianity and spread it to the corners of the empire as THE favored religion." This is a reduction, an oversimplification. Christianity was always more than what the Roman Empire could absorb. Read Jacques Elul, the French historian who reads the legalization of Christianity under Constantine as a "bastardization" of it. The teachings of Jesus in people's hearts couldn't be bastardized.

  • Pabulum and lies. Crackpot history cobbled together from scraps of truths stretched with speculation and invention.

  • Another case of "unless you're Christian, you can't know what's right or wrong." Gimme a break!

  • Lunatic

  • When the Christians took over Rome they eliminated public schools, destroyed bath houses (many plagues spread as a result), burned thousands of books that society is left without today (thankfully the Muslims preserved many for us in the Middle Ages), and the Christians killed more pagans than the pagans killed Christians. DESPITE YOUR EFFORT TO ELIMINATE HISTORY SCHAEFFER IT WILL COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU AND EVERY CRUSADING AND CHRISTIAN INQUISITOR!

  • Oh, yes! Because only Republicans and ideological conservatives are Christians. Do tell! *rolls eyes*

  • @Chakam They are just the biggest trolls in the room, and the loudest.

  • By all means: refute any facts I have cited, drnantz. Unless, of course, you simply can't, and the "typical liberal" ad hominem is your best shot.

  • Typical liberal. Smear the messenger

  • @Mythrandir54 I said, "earned". An honorary doctorate is not earned, and perhaps if you'd had any affiliation with legitimate academic pursuit, you would have been informed that no recipiant on an honorary doctorate is entitled to be addressed as "Doctor".

Additionally: Highland College of Long Beach, CA is not a regional accredited college. Greenleaf/Trinity holds accreditation with neither the AALS nor the ABA, and Gordon (MA) awards no doctorates as part of its academic program.

  • Remember what Goebbels said about the "big lie"? Repeat it often enough, and no matter how absurd, people will buy it.

Thus it is with the "Doctor" Francis Schaeffer lie. The man NEVER in his life earned a doctorate.

  • is this public domain

  • Consider Namaste Constitutional Responsible Freedom as the answer to the Old World Disorder Demonic Theocracy. Is this the central theme in the Teachings of Jesus and the U.S. Constitution? Thank-you so much for posting this fantastic series.

  • I can't for the life of me comprehend what happened to his son.

Anyways, How Should We Then Live is one of the, if not THE greatest works, next to the Bible. Simply breathtaking and totally applicable to our day.

  • Somehow, I do not envy the certainty on view here. I'm glad to remember that Jesus said he was not building an earthly kingdom. The so called non-reason referred to here is found in religious folk and non-religious. The love of God and man in Christ is a redemption opportunity for man; love him, and your neighbor as yourself.

  • @Eyesayah I would agree with you but for the modern doubt. How should we live without that beautiful faith that you speak of? Our culture gives us peace and an identity when we lose our faith. Fight on.

  • @masterfeatherpen It appears I ran afoul of a bug posting a reply to you. You might have received several slightly different versions of my comment. Sorry for that difficulty.

  • Brilliant!!!
