@thomas5678tzu no cpu on the market for less then $300 is better then any i7 on the 1366 platform benchmarks are just that in the real world they dont mean shit half the time
You think the push pin fans are bad,I dread the old metal strap clips that were fitted to the Socket A cooling fans, with the naked silicon cpus that AMD used to make the risk of cracking the chip was very high.Nothing worse than cracking the chip you just paid a fortune for.the best fan mounting system that was made was for the socket 478 why they changed it i'll never know!
actually ...... $200 on newegg will get you a amd 3.4Ghz now I think .... and about $1000 gets you a intel 3.2Ghz. I love amd for the same price intel chip I can put 2 extremely powerful ati DX 11 cards in a system
Actually, its kinda stupid of us to argue intel vs AMD. Model to model...so far I haven't seen any AMD model out do an i7 when at stock speeds. Most AMDs will overclock nicely (heck my athlon XP has been overclocked for 6 yrs). I can over clock my i7 920 to 3.6 GHz on air, and I have seen 4+ GHz with water. Gaming=Phenom. Content creation/raw power = Core i5/i7. I do CAD, photoshop, and 3d modeling. I need raw power.
price-to-GHz, AMD may win, but only if you ignore the real performance of the chip. You really can't say AMD>Intel (or Intel>AMD), but you can say 2.6 ghz Phenom II x4>2.6 ghz Core 2 Quad (or Corei7>Phenom II x4). I'm an Intel fan for now, but realistically, I'm a fan of what ever is proven to be the better choice for MY situation. I ALMOST built a Phenom II rig, but them researched the i7, and for me, it was worth the extra $100 or so.
I haven not built my rig yet but yeah I was going to build an AMD rig as well till I realized the motherboards do not cost much more for decent Intel motherboards compared to the AMD motherboards.
because of the price tags Intel sets on chips, I would go with a 920, then just skip to the 965/975. That's if your talking X58. I may start a new P55 rig with an 1156 i7. But for now i'm happy with my Q9550@3.8 and 5870 (getting xfire)

not true, intel's top chips are superior in every way except for cryptology, both hashing and encryption. intel's 920 outperforms the PII965 by about 10 - 15% at stock, however, intel's 920 D0 chips overclocks to about 3.8 - 4 ghz and even higher, they usually outperform higher tiers at stock, for 200 bucks you essentially get a chip equal to those costing up to a grand. I don't think the 965 can keep pace. the PII also only supports dual channel. i5 is the equivalent to the 965 at stock.
my next rig will be a intel i7 920 and i5 750 will b testing but what u talk about is just on paper benchmarking not real world performance maybe for ziping file but 4 gaming keep on living in your intel dream world FANBOY HAHAHA amd vs intel dont be ingnorant AMD win it`s the true gamer chip dont be fool by the bs fanboy write u cant b the best in every thing get use to it

You need a motherboard with a Intel X58 Chipset and Northbridge(they are the same thing). I recommend that you actually buy the weakest and least expensive i7 CPU, the 920 @ 2.66 GHz, because you can overclock the core clock above 2.93 GHz and even 3.2, and he is right, even the 920 can overclock far beyond 4 GHz, which is for the nastiest of enthusiasts. Do not buy the 965 Extreme $1000 version. The only thing different is the unlocked multiplier
And like anyone NEEDS that kind of speed. If your motherboard can handle that, good for you, and have fun wasting your money on luxuries. I bet half the reason you bought it was to brag about it to your friends.
it's b/c intel fanboys don't realize that it's their GPU's and hard disks bottle-necking their systems, not their CPU. might as well throw $100-600 bux in the trash if you're just gaming.
@IntrebuloN who said nvidia was made from intel??? and the CPU is actually a huge performance difference... aka my 4670 in my pentium 4. and yes HDD is sometimes a huge diffeance.. but 7200RPM is perfect for core i7 and core i7 is a huge differance in gaming vs the AMD CPU's,
@groudon8 cant brag about computers much cause since the release of the 940 numerous chips have came and went that have replaced it in performance any avid upgrader would know this
@groudon8 well why watch a video about performance parts then make some stupid comment about oh to much power....its officially a mainstream product performance is a overclocked 2600k or a 980x everything else is just going mainstream hell some people are hoping a skulltrail platform will house dual 980x and yet thats not enough power heck i am using a ssd and hell i want a faster one,not enough speed for me im a gamer so the more the better
4 ghz isn't really a guarantee if you ask me, i would say 3.8ghz for both the C1 and D0. And the 975 clocks to about 4.2-4.4. As far as i know only intel thenselves reached 5 ghz on air. But that was on a cherry picked, heavily overclockable chip. If i remember correctly that 975 did 3.33 on just 0.975 volts, which is just crazy
lol better get a i7 920 ... with a good cooling you can overclock it up to 3.8 - 4.0 GhZ.... you can save money cause the 940 costs about 340$ and the i7 extreme about 1000$, thats waste of money
What many people confuse with this processor is not Nehalem, its built on the technology from Nehalem, core i7 is not Nehalem, when the actually intel Nehalem comes out its going to be way better than core i7, I actually got to test out Nehalem (the actual one) and it over clocked to 7.21265ghz but you should of bought the extreme edition. Its average overclock is 4.8ghz
I bought it to test againsdt the 920 to prove the 940 is a worthless peice of crap i would never advice anyone to buy the 940 i now have the new 920 d0 stepping it does 4.6ghz at 1.45v and 4.2 at 1.22v
Man, here in AUS the i7 920 is $480, the i7 940 is close to $1000 and the extreme 965 is $1700 whilst chips like the core 2 E8400 is $260, the core 2 quad q8200 is $290 etc...your going to "TRY" the 940 before you "UPGRADE" to the 965 extreme. Damn your rich.
also, I have yet to play a game where I need to run 3 GPU's. complete waste of money if you ask me. I was running 2 GPU's and I took one out, I have yet to notice the difference in a game supporting 2 GPU's versus 1 GPU. What it all comes down to is what the eye can see, frankly I think they are using some nice psychological methods on gamers here :x
you know what, this copy bs arguement is stupid. For people saying intel copied AMD or AMD copied intel, your just morons, it's that simple. regardless of who did what first. logic has it that you will want your CPU not to get so hot, therefore........yea, think about it for a second, let it soak in.
Nah man i aint gonna delete your comments everyone is entitled to there view, but your right it is silly to argue over this kind of stuff everyone has there prefrences for all sort of reasons, but no i dont usually go by any of them sites as they are usually making stuff up. I usually test stuff my self as its the only true way of telling but if i cant i check on xs forums which are a very credible source for that sort of info.
you two are fucking defending processors. seriously, computer tech fluctuates so often its impossible to say which is the best, maybe the PII is better, why should it matter?
Isnt it the only processor to be released so far in 2009? So to say one the best of 2009 is a bit silly. Ive also just been throiugh the vantage scores search all results i bin through the first 20 pages of results and i cant find on phenom 2 it intel all the way and in the top ten in each preset there no phenom either so where you get your info from, i cant find one score above 27000 at the moment.
Now the older 3dmarks as i said dont utilise multi core so they perform well in those.
And in gaming the i7 is king on the fastest graphics platform the core 2 or the p2 cannot compete because of the bottle neck for instance check Stanbonys warhead benchmark with a core 2 at 4.2ghz it just cant compete with an i7 at 4.2 ghz it will be the same with the p2.
Single card situations all chips will be about the same including the duel core but as you start adding the graphics cards the others fall by the way side as the i7 flies.
you are way off with that, its only just catching up with the core 2 its performance is know where near the i7. Granted people have hit 6+ ghz with the phenom 2 but it still cant match the i7 although it does well in the older 3dmarks where it wont make use of multi cores but in vantage where it does it dont stand a chance
Dude everyone copies everyone. Like AMD copied Intel with 45nm chips. Thats a btter advancement than putting the memory controller on the chip. So stop thinking AMD is the best. People but i7 chips because they can get max frames on games. The Phenom 2 can't get frames like the i7 thats why people buy the i7. And i7 mobos are the only mbs that can use both tri sli and crossfire at the same time. Intel is at top now. AMD doesn't look like they going to do better now. i7 cost 2x more but 2x faster
oh how wrong you are. In this case, intel copied AMD's phenom's microarchitecture, where each cpus get respectable amount of l2 cache and shared l3 cache pool. Only difference being that intel pulled it off better than AMD did. When it comes to gaming performance, there are not that much difference between i7s and phenoms2s. Hell, in some games e8400 runs better than the i7 965. Also, check out intel 'skulltrail' mobo. had sli and cxf.
Anways, don't try to appear smart if you know jackshit.
Actually AMD has the record in 3d mark 06. They got a Phenom II up to like 6.1GHz with 2 OC'd 4870 X2's. I prefer Intel but you have to admit AMD may be starting to comeback with there Phenom II's.
Push-pins are not a nightmare to fit you idiot, only when you try to do it with the motherboard still in the PC and who is the idiot who does that...sigh
haha...AMD cheaper but value , the price is equal to the performance , intel price are just a bit too high , but don't worry dude , AMD will force intel to cut down it price so u can enjoy be an intel slave and won't get bankrupt XD
LOL no way man, my e8400 beats a tri core piece of shit and they the same price, and the 920i7 is selling for 410$ in perth and i doubt that any of your top range amd will match or even beat it, i like amd on the market because it makes my GODLIKE intel get cheaper but if you pay attention the 920i7 beats 1000$ intel cpus so i dont know why its like that but god im happy
my one was the Athlon64 , i build it my self , it beat the P4 at it times , the P4 are just like a piece of shit when compare to it...LOL , and it has cause intel for a revolution , but that was old story...i hope to get a new system so i can play the GTA IV :)
It doesn't need to be shrunk, it's 45nm and they have spaced the cores further apart for Quickpath, if it was a 65nm it would overheat (if the cores were bigger anyway) It basically leaves more room for cores, but uses less power and generates less heat. It's an incredibly well designed chip, better than anything AMD are churning out.
hmm...i just surprise when saw it look so big , feel like going back to the P3 era...lol,yeah...it learn the AMD way but just did it better than AMD abit .
Okay Mr SMART!!! Just because this is the new processor from Intel doesn't make it PERFECT for gaming!!! Just check its benchmark, this thing has no high diffrence from the rest of the Quad Cores and it was meant for Designing NOT Gaming.
It does make adifferene in gaming not for people on a single card but for people running sli setup say 2 or 3 gtx 280 there is a frame difference in some cases 25 plus frames over the core 2 duo and core 2 quads maybe you should go check the benchmarks.
I'm runnin a 280 SLI Setup with quad core extreme and 60 fps in Crysis. Can you beat that? and if you don't believe me, go to the iformation site that you trust and check out the diffrence in the Benchmarks, believe me its realy no big diffrence. To be truthful, i have my eyes on the I7 series but until i see big diffrence in upcoming game titles that embraces the full extent of it, i'm holdin my cash in my pocket.
and i have couple more questions, this one not so random.
I am planning on building a i7 rig soon and i am wondering if the stock cooler(with no overclock) is fine for normal use and playing crysis and whatnot.
also, would i have to do anything other than plug it in for DDR3-1600 ram on the eVga X58? I was reading that the bios only supports up to 1333.
The stock cooler is fine for normal stock use and you are correct the evga bios only supoorts 1333mhz but it is gonna be fixed in a bios update it may have been already. You can still use 1600 or 1866 but it will run no faster than 1333 and be stable, until the update.

fuck intel, sure equal speed AMD chips are 5% slower
but for the price of an intel you can get an AMD thats miles ahead of its intel counterpart and actually end up with a better system.
what i mean is as an example
$200 = 2.5ghz intel = $3.2GHZ amd.
samljer 2 years ago
actually ...... $200 on newegg will get you a amd 3.4Ghz now I think .... and about $1000 gets you a intel 3.2Ghz. I love amd for the same price intel chip I can put 2 extremely powerful ati DX 11 cards in a system

@samljer I also like AMD when it comes to reliability, but Intel is way ahead in sheer clock speed

Yeah, but even with those extra clocks, amd keeps up pretty well.
intel seems to have more frequent anomolies as well.

@samljer more GHz =/= better performance. It's about how much is being done per clock cycle, NOT the number of clock cycles in a second.

do i need to put on thermal compound, or is it already applied?
i will not be overclocking at all, but i will be gaming a lot
is the stock stuff good enouph?
RSSsailing 2 years ago
The stock cooler is good enough. It already got thermal compound...i think ;). Bing/google/yahoo is your friend.

why ddint you get the 965 that is a beastly cpu as in the words of turbitor "absolutly phenomenol

I have got Intel Pentium Dual-Core and i want to upgrade to Core i7 but would i have to change my motherboard??
Motherboard:
Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Model: 0A54h
Chipset: Intel Q965
Southbridge: Intel 82801H0 (ICH8D0
I dont have a clue what all that means
PLZ HELP!! :)
1uke101 2 years ago
Yes you will need to change your motherboard.
The only thing different is the unlocked multiplier
groudon8 2 years ago
Thanks :)
1uke101 2 years ago
STFU i have got the 965 and it is well worth it, myne is overclocked to 5ghz with extreme watercooling and a stable 45 degress temperature
raheemisbad 2 years ago
And like anyone NEEDS that kind of speed. If your motherboard can handle that, good for you, and have fun wasting your money on luxuries. I bet half the reason you bought it was to brag about it to your friends.
groudon8 2 years ago 4
it's b/c intel fanboys don't realize that it's their GPU's and hard disks bottle-necking their systems, not their CPU. might as well throw $100-600 bux in the trash if you're just gaming.
IntrebuloN 2 years ago
@IntrebuloN who said nvidia was made from intel??? and the CPU is actually a huge performance difference... aka my 4670 in my pentium 4. and yes HDD is sometimes a huge diffeance.. but 7200RPM is perfect for core i7 and core i7 is a huge differance in gaming vs the AMD CPU's,
acefilms2008 2 years ago
@groudon8 and your point is.....
MACHIAVELLIxKOVI 1 year ago
@groudon8 cant brag about computers much cause since the release of the 940 numerous chips have came and went that have replaced it in performance any avid upgrader would know this

@1974dodgedartsport Take a look at when my comment was written. I do know this information.
groudon8 11 months ago
@groudon8 well why watch a video about performance parts then make some stupid comment about oh to much power....its officially a mainstream product performance is a overclocked 2600k or a 980x everything else is just going mainstream hell some people are hoping a skulltrail platform will house dual 980x and yet thats not enough power heck i am using a ssd and hell i want a faster one,not enough speed for me im a gamer so the more the better

lol the 920 can get atleast at 4ghz on air! So way pay so much, for 5ghz that you really dont use?
N1mro8 2 years ago
4 ghz isn't really a guarantee if you ask me, i would say 3.8ghz for both the C1 and D0. And the 975 clocks to about 4.2-4.4. As far as i know only intel thenselves reached 5 ghz on air. But that was on a cherry picked, heavily overclockable chip. If i remember correctly that 975 did 3.33 on just 0.975 volts, which is just crazy
Thekilldevilhill 2 years ago 2
thats the idle voltage not even 32nm chips will do that
chumbucket843 2 years ago
if you're on a budget get intel dx58so, (Asus p6t non-deluxe is better) i7 920, and 3 or 6 GB of DDR3-1333 mhz and you would be fine....

lol better get a i7 920 ... with a good cooling you can overclock it up to 3.8 - 4.0 GhZ.... you can save money cause the 940 costs about 340$ and the i7 extreme about 1000$, thats waste of money
cocatoo555 2 years ago
whats the differince between core i7 920 940 965 extreme????
Godlike0503 2 years ago
The 920 is 2.66ghz the 940 is 2.93ghz and the 965 is 3.2ghz plus it has an unlocked multiplier for extreme overclocking
R3APERvsTYETREE 2 years ago
What many people confuse with this processor is not Nehalem, its built on the technology from Nehalem, core i7 is not Nehalem, when the actually intel Nehalem comes out its going to be way better than core i7, I actually got to test out Nehalem (the actual one) and it over clocked to 7.21265ghz but you should of bought the extreme edition. Its average overclock is 4.8ghz
addiscreation40 2 years ago
Nehalem is the code name for the archetecture used its actually bloomfield.
R3APERvsTYETREE 2 years ago
my bad my bad i meant to say the intel xeon processor (bloomsfield, nehalem technology) it suppose to come out later this year about november
but the thing is that it isnt stable
and also intel isnt sure if they are actually going to put it into the xeon family or just put it as nehalem
addiscreation40 2 years ago
i've got a i7 920 to 3.4 ghz on stock cooling.... why would you spend more moeny for this and not overclock it better?
drakeishfyre 2 years ago
omg you spend double so much moey for the 940 and you get still this crappy cooler like in the 920
HongKongKanto 2 years ago 3
thats marketing =D
Supish16 2 years ago 2
I bought it to test againsdt the 920 to prove the 940 is a worthless peice of crap i would never advice anyone to buy the 940 i now have the new 920 d0 stepping it does 4.6ghz at 1.45v and 4.2 at 1.22v
R3APERvsTYETREE 2 years ago
Man, here in AUS the i7 920 is $480, the i7 940 is close to $1000 and the extreme 965 is $1700 whilst chips like the core 2 E8400 is $260, the core 2 quad q8200 is $290 etc...your going to "TRY" the 940 before you "UPGRADE" to the 965 extreme. Damn your rich.
rustygates 2 years ago 2
"intel $uck$!!!:)) "
Intel pwns AMD anyday.
(anyways you should of gotten the 920 2.66 to 2.93 for 300 dollars more and they both Overclock to 4 something GHz.
LordofWar199215 2 years ago
i did i bought both the 920 and the 940 and you are right they both overclock to 4ghz infact the 920 overclocked better than the 940

also, I have yet to play a game where I need to run 3 GPU's. complete waste of money if you ask me. I was running 2 GPU's and I took one out, I have yet to notice the difference in a game supporting 2 GPU's versus 1 GPU. What it all comes down to is what the eye can see, frankly I think they are using some nice psychological methods on gamers here :x

Play Crysis on max settings at 1920x1080 with 4x AA and 16x AF with a GTX 280.
Then try it with 2.
Then 3.
You'll notice a lot.

you know what, this copy bs arguement is stupid.

Peace man
R3APERvsTYETREE 2 years ago
you two are fucking defending processors. seriously, computer tech fluctuates so often its impossible to say which is the best, maybe the PII is better, why should it matter?
CrdBrdProjects 2 years ago
Isnt it the only processor to be released so far in 2009? So to say one the best of 2009 is a bit silly. Ive also just been throiugh the vantage scores search all results i bin through the first 20 pages of results and i cant find on phenom 2 it intel all the way and in the top ten in each preset there no phenom either so where you get your info from, i cant find one score above 27000 at the moment.
Now the older 3dmarks as i said dont utilise multi core so they perform well in those.
R3APERvsTYETREE 2 years ago
And in gaming the i7 is king on the fastest graphics platform the core 2 or the p2 cannot compete because of the bottle neck for instance check Stanbonys warhead benchmark with a core 2 at 4.2ghz it just cant compete with an i7 at 4.2 ghz it will be the same with the p2.
Single card situations all chips will be about the same including the duel core but as you start adding the graphics cards the others fall by the way side as the i7 flies.
R3APERvsTYETREE 2 years ago
you are way off with that, its only just catching up with the core 2 its performance is know where near the i7. Granted people have hit 6+ ghz with the phenom 2 but it still cant match the i7 although it does well in the older 3dmarks where it wont make use of multi cores but in vantage where it does it dont stand a chance
R3APERvsTYETREE 2 years ago
gonna get the 965, seems better cause the 940 is just an overclocked 920 anyways..

AMD doesn't look like they going to do better now. i7 cost 2x more but 2x faster
nismogtr500hp 3 years ago 2
oh how wrong you are.
Anways, don't try to appear smart if you know jackshit.
captaintutle 3 years ago
the i7 mobo is not the only one thath can run tri-sli and crossfire... think of the skulltrail mobo from intel!!
hpidude 3 years ago
Actually AMD has the record in 3d mark 06. They got a Phenom II up to like 6.1GHz with 2 OC'd 4870 X2's. I prefer Intel but you have to admit AMD may be starting to comeback with there Phenom II's.

wth !? why was that chip look so big ?
is bigger than the AMD chip !
intel need some better tech to shrink it XD
sonofliberty08 3 years ago
intel bigger cause they better, amd suck and they are small, but not only do they suck they are cheap.. LULZ
bobjoshilly 3 years ago
haha...AMD cheaper but value , the price is equal to the performance , intel price are just a bit too high , but don't worry dude , AMD will force intel to cut down it price so u can enjoy be an intel slave and won't get bankrupt XD
sonofliberty08 3 years ago
LOL no way man, my e8400 beats a tri core piece of shit and they the same price, and the 920i7 is selling for 410$ in perth and i doubt that any of your top range amd will match or even beat it, i like amd on the market because it makes my GODLIKE intel get cheaper but if you pay attention the 920i7 beats 1000$ intel cpus so i dont know why its like that but god im happy
bobjoshilly 3 years ago
my one was the Athlon64 , i build it my self , it beat the P4 at it times , the P4 are just like a piece of shit when compare to it...LOL , and it has cause intel for a revolution , but that was old story...i hope to get a new system so i can play the GTA IV :)
sonofliberty08 3 years ago
its bigger because the memory controller is built withing the processor..
devkamal 3 years ago
well ... AMD have the mem controller in the processor since K8 core ......
sonofliberty08 3 years ago
well... good for amd then..
devkamal 3 years ago
It doesn't need to be shrunk, it's 45nm and they have spaced the cores further apart for Quickpath, if it was a 65nm it would overheat (if the cores were bigger anyway) It basically leaves more room for cores, but uses less power and generates less heat. It's an incredibly well designed chip, better than anything AMD are churning out.
therevengeofsaladboy 3 years ago
hmm...i just surprise when saw it look so big , feel like going back to the P3 era...lol,yeah...it learn the AMD way but just did it better than AMD abit .
sonofliberty08 3 years ago
Gamers WorldWide! Attention!!!!
advice from your fellow Gamer brother.....
Get a Quad core Extreme, there is no diffrence between them except extra 400$ on this.
HighShippu 3 years ago
I must say you are an idiot.
Kamalles 3 years ago
Okay Mr SMART!!! Just because this is the new processor from Intel doesn't make it PERFECT for gaming!!! Just check its benchmark, this thing has no high diffrence from the rest of the Quad Cores and it was meant for Designing NOT Gaming.
HighShippu 3 years ago
It does make adifferene in gaming not for people on a single card but for people running sli setup say 2 or 3 gtx 280 there is a frame difference in some cases 25 plus frames over the core 2 duo and core 2 quads maybe you should go check the benchmarks.
R3APERvsTYETREE 3 years ago
I'm runnin a 280 SLI Setup with quad core extreme and 60 fps in Crysis. Can you beat that? and if you don't believe me, go to the iformation site that you trust and check out the diffrence in the Benchmarks, believe me its realy no big diffrence. To be truthful, i have my eyes on the I7 series but until i see big diffrence in upcoming game titles that embraces the full extent of it, i'm holdin my cash in my pocket.
HighShippu 3 years ago
the 300$ 920 beats at 1000$ Quadcore extreme, so I dont really get what youre saying.
weyzer01 3 years ago
920 works a great deal better than extreme quads, ive noticed its more stable no hangings, just good 60-70fps on crysis on enthusiest
bobjoshilly 3 years ago
This is not $400 dollers more than a core 2 extreme, even the 920 is amazing in games and it is nearly £900 cheaper than the slower core 2 qx9770

thanks for the reply!!!
and i have couple more questions, this one not so random.
Scoggs117 3 years ago
The stock cooler is fine for normal stock use and you are correct the evga bios only supoorts 1333mhz but it is gonna be fixed in a bios update it may have been already. You can still use 1600 or 1866 but it will run no faster than 1333 and be stable, until the update.
