He was on steroid for awhile to maintain his wight and energy levels. AIDS and HIV are two separate stages of the disease (some researchers think that they're two entirely different diseases) and some people develop one and not the other and vise verse. Some remain HIV+ for an entirely normal lifespan (ie: Magic Johnson). Depends on the strain of the virus
