  • I could technically drive for free because the parking stall at my work has an outlet. I usually have to plug my car in anyways because I live in Winnipeg. I wonder how this car performs when it's 40 below

  • masscashstacks, go to gm-volt (dot) com and they have a winter testing article.

  • Check out the latest winter/cool Volt testing video they have up.

  • Aftermarket battery trays to extend milage will follow soon like the Prius.

  • I do not understand why they didnt used a diesel engine as a generator, also, when the generator is working to give power to the electric motor, why it doesn't charge the batteries too?

  • lostchildren, GM didn't have a small diesel engine available and most Americans still prefer gas. Why would you want the generator to top off the battery when you can plug it in?

  • What I was thinking was that, if you are driving on the highway and the battery discharges, then the engine comes on and powers the electric motor right? But why it doesn't charge the batteries too? It would be nice that after some hours of highway driving and charging, the gas engine would shut off and let the electric one take over for another 40 miles. Or had a 50 or 60 percent charge when you get home.

  • lostchildren, The generator never lets the battery get below about 30% charge to keep it from getting damaged. That is a problem with Lithium batteries. If the generator topped off the battery it would decrease the mileage and I really don't see the point of charging the battery at the expense of decreased mileage.

  • @ndyt Diesel should be recommended as well, adding the urea injection without the use of DPF.

  • @AdMiRaLeDpIeTt, GM didn't have a small diesel engine available and most Americans still prefer gas.

  • @ndyt Let's see, how about PURE Hydrogen?!

  • @AdMiRaLeDpIeTt, what about hydrogen? And where are you going to get it?

  • a good free documentary is "who killed the electric car". You can watch it in google's video section.

Strange that technology in 1996 is better than today.

    ps. Fuck you GM

  • I don't understand. Full battery and gas tank gives 300 miles and battery and extended mode gives +700 miles. Does the volt have a second fuel tank?

  • I can careless about the naysayers, I want this car.

  • Only 300 miles, that is really shitty. Also only 40 miles on a battery, there are so many other electric cars that go for 90 miles or more.

  • skyman95946, 300/40 miles are the minimum, you will get much better if you drive carefully. Those EVs that can go longer cant go on long trips like the Volt.

  • My thoughts exactly, "only 300 miles" & Detroit wonders why they cannot sell any cars. My 10 year old car still get over 23MPG and 350+ miles per tank! Tesla Motors currently makes best (albeit most expensive) EV as of today.

  • My (almost) 20 year old car (1991 pontiac sunbird) gets me atleast 420km (260 miles) per tank

  • Wow only 300 hundred miles, How many gallon gas tank, I get almost 400 miles in my avalanche truck on a full tank, but they do not tell you how long it will go a just gas. What a joke

  • they said 300 with both together and 40 miles on just electricity, so that mean that it should be able to go 260miles with just gas
