GM food is not a solution, it's a problem. Monsanto has enslaved farmers in 3rd World countries. Many have resorted to suicide by drinking Monsanto pesticides because they are in endless debt with no way out. Not to mention there have been studies that show health issues related to eating GM foods. Liver, kidney, heart and adrenal problems have been linked. Not to mention cross contamination of nearby crops that farmers are trying to grow organically. Monsanto can sue...
If we are going to feed the entire population of the world, then we are going to have to use GM food, this is stupid and baseless and a very transparent attack on GM food.
@Clairvoyant23 Baseless... the world did just fine feeding itself for thousands of years until industrialization decided it best to push out biodiversity and force GM crop dependancy everywhere possible for mass production. Its never been a problem of availability, only access. The poor vs rich/politically connected.

Its never been a problem of availability, only access. The poor vs rich/politically connected.
@Aaron12779 How do you define fine? Famine? Famine was and still is a constant problem in developing countries, we didn't suddenly start having famine during the industrial revolution. We have an amazing access to food because of the revolutions in transport and farming. The countries that still have problems with famine are the ones that do not have these technologies and who still rely on crops susceptible to disease and drought. GM Food is close to solving that problem, don't try to stop it.
@Clairvoyant23 UN report International Assessment of Agricultural Science Technology Development by 400 scientists concluded GM crops, etc. have very little potential to alleviate hunger or poverty and can potentially INCREASE hunger and poverty in poor countries where most hunger and poverty occur. Several UN reports and peer reviewed studies suggest organic farming can DECREASE hunger and poverty in poor countries.
@Clairvoyant23, There is no evidence that it is necessary to use genetically engineered foods to feed the growing world population. That's just spin, not science. In fact, there are studies (not developed by an ad company) suggesting the opposite. It certainly sets up a precarious situation. Anyway, this is just calling for LABELING. The fact that this stuff isn't required to be labeled in the USA is unbelievable. We demonize food from China, but at least they have to label GM ingredients...
@Clairvoyant23 "Organic farming can yield up to three times as much food as conventional farming on the same amount of land.""in developed countries, yields were almost equal on organic and conventional farms. In developing countries, food production could double or triple using organic methods"" sciencedaily"dot"com/releases/2007/07/070711134523.htm
@myndy86 That is simply a lie, and you don't even know what GM means. We have "genetically modified" food ever since we started to farm it by picking the plants with the most fruit and using those seeds. Also Organic farming is not the opposite of GM farming. The crops used in organic farming often times have been "Modified" to provide more products, all organic means is that they did not use pesticides.
@Clairvoyant23 GE is not the same as selective, cross breeding, etc. USDA(and just about everyone else's) definition of GE is "under guidelines issued by USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, genetic engineering is defined as the genetic modification of organisms by recombinant DNA techniques (7CFR340: 340.1)." "Recombinant DNA techniques (DNA formed by combining segments of DNA from different organisms)" ers.usda.gov/briefing/biotechnology/glossary.htm
@Clairvoyant23 UN report Organic Agriculture and Food Security in Africa states "Organic farming can lead to increased food production – in many cases a doubling of yields has been seen""the average crop yield increase was even higher for these projects: 116 per cent increase for all African projects and 128 per cent increase for the projects in East Africa"
@Clairvoyant23 Umm, Genetically modified means to GENETICALLY alter the genes of the plant in a lab.
And organic farming also means that the farmer will try as best they can to keep their plants from cross-pollinating with their neighbors' GM fields. Organic stuff isn't necessarily GMO-free, but they try and it's the best indication out there that something is GMO free.
Also, what would you have labels say? Just saying something has been genetically engineered says nothing. It doesn't say what gene was inserted, what affect it has, how it was inserted, what promoter was used, if there are protein interactions or secondary metabolites, if the gene is transgenic, cisgenic, or anti-sense (and everyone who is anti-GMO should know what all those things mean and what they do). Can something be informative with no information? No, but it can be scaremongering
@Zhavlon Great question! Personally, I think the packaging should have a small label in the front that is easy to identify, with additional information on the back, as part of the "Ingredients" list. For example, a box of cereal might have a little black dot that says GMO on the front. And on the back the ingredients could state: Corn flour and bran blend (Corn flour, whole grain corn flour, Corn bran derived from BT corn), sugar (from Monsanto Roundup Ready sugar beet), honey, salt, etc.
@Zhavlon I think it's important for people to be able to easily tell which foods are GM. A consumer may be allergic to one species that is engineered into a crop and should have the information to narrow it down to what caused their reaction (or eventual illness from repeated intake of the product). I think it would be very useful for all the information you mentioned to be included on the packaging. I really do want to know where my food comes from and how it was made!
Why just GMOs, but not food produced with naturally mutated varieties, plant sports, wide crosses, embryo rescue, chemical / radiation mutagenesis, somatic variation, tissue culture, grafting, polyploidy, crops treated with colchicine, ect. Singling out GMOs, which change the plant much less than the others & use only well understood proteins is either inconsistent or just downright ignorant. Considering your site claims GMOs are dangerous with no benefit (not true!) I'm guessing ignorant.
You may eat it all you want...after all thats what a free market is all about. Just like people who choose to still smoke while knowing some of the 2000 ingredients are URINE and lots of SUGAR.
@Aldaris8 This is NOT hysteria ... ALL we want is an honest open debate and they wont give it to us WHY NOT if there is nothing to hide ? l HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW what my family eat and what testing has been done !
back to the basics people....

Genetic modification itself isn't a bad thing - it's the companies. There is just a HUGE misunderstanding of GM in the way it works.
