I like your idea for the tesla coil.. I wanted to ask a few questions . If you can't get a neon transformer could you use a normal generater. And how did you get the light bulb to do that exactly? Thank you for ur time
This is awesome. This seriously just made my day. I have been trying for two weeks to find a tutorial that I can actually follow and you seriously helped me out with that. I have been trying to make a small (harmless... hopefully) tesla coil to display in my basement for fun, but all the ones I have found require prior knowledge that I don't have. I am still in high school and havn't taken any electronics class yet.
@codex653 Again, thank you. I have already started. It is crude, but it is slightly working. I plan to have something worth showing off by this weekend. I also plan on really stepping it up from there to a large scale one that I can use on stage.
OK folks, these are called Leyden jar capacitors. Look them up on the net for diagrams. Tesla used these capacitors but the inside of the jar had salt water of some kind inside the jar, with an electrode sticking into it and either metal on the outside or another bath of salt water... it's all on the net. Look it up. Leyden jar capacitors..... BTW do NOT take the discharge directly from a coil without being well insulated from ground, say a wooden chair. Bad idea....
Move the primary down to the bottom of the secondary coil,. You are losing output voltage by splitting. The primary should be bare wire so you can tune the circuit. If stranded, tin the wires and make them all stick together. Less primary turns will probably tune it better. Glass plates with foil on both sides make great capacitors. Stack plates and glass many times for bigger value cap.
Get mineral oil and pour between plates of glass/foil. get 1/8 to 1/4 in. glass. Min. oil bath is best.
I know where there is a bunch of old worthless microwave ovens laying around that I could amputate, but what about the capacitors and the spark and safety gap? I don't think I understand those too well. Did you make the capacitors, if so how? Farads of resistance means very little to me.
@clintonearlwalker Farads are the unit of measure for capacitors. Ohms are the unit of measure for resistance. You really should study-up about basic electronics first. Jumping into high voltage projects like this, with no knowledge can be fatal. It's a really bad idea. There is a lot of information about building TC's that is NOT given on the internet. There's just too much tribal knowledge they can't cover in 10 minutes. Study and be safe man...
@Landotter1 Yeah, I basically no nothing about this type of thing. Usually,. when I try to make something like this, I stand far away from it, plug it in, then unplug it quickly if anything that looks even remotely dangerous happens. This type of project is probably more complex than I am capable of, but they keep saying how simple it is. I have zero knowledge of electronics though, (well very little), I studied political science in college.
@clintonearlwalker I understand that. i haven't built a coil in over 20 years. I have forgotten a lot but if need be, I can reracll things as my memory is poked... :-D Anyway, I'll be glad to help if I can. This video is not so helpful as he generalizes things too much. It is pretty good if you already know things about the components and the circuit, but in your case, this video is pretty useless. Anyway, let me know if I can help. :-D
@Landotter1 Hey, thanx for that but I probably won't try to build a TC. I don't know a lot about high voltage except from that AC/DC song . . . contracts, neckties, HIGH VOLTION!!! done dirt cheap. There's probably more to it than that though. I'm slowly gaining info about TC's I've watched a good many vids here but homemade capacitors and that stuff are still a little beyond me. Thanx and Cheers!! C.Walker
@clintonearlwalker Roger that!!! well don't be afraid to ask. Look up glass plate capacitors. Ultra easy to make and works real well!!! Just don't use cheap-ass glass. use good window glass. :-D
I don't quite understand the capacitors, because I made one, and i'm not sure how it's to be hooked up. So there's that top piece sticking out and a foil on the bottom, I need to know if a wire goes only to the top or if there's two wires and they go one to the top and one to the foil, could you clarify on this?
@jtfunkymojo no but it's pretty close to zero amps...the transformer i used was i think 20mA short circuit current at 12,000 volts....ramp the voltage up several times with the tesla coil and you are getting max maybe 3mA...nowhere near enough to kill you...granted this thing does give you one nasty shock!:D
I'm going to make a tesla coil for school and I need all the info I can get so here's my questions, 1 how did u wire it all. 2 would a transformer in a microwave work? 3 how did you make the copasaters (I don't no how to spell that) 4 if u have any other good info on the tesla coil I would love to hear it. Thanks
hey man insanley sick coil i am looking at building one with a friend of mine between free to cheap and i just had a few questions if you have the time message me and ill start asking
Very nice! You may be able to get it to work better if you adjust the position and coupling of the primary coil to the secondary coil. I'm thinking a conical primary with 8 AWG wire would be a good idea. One more suggestion: Small tesla coils work best when the secondary coil's height is about five times the diameter. Just some things to try ;) Good work, though!
Hey, i was just wondering if you could send me instructions on how to make this, i am also trying to build one for a school project, but i need it to be safe enough for you to touch it, my email is fikenhellokitty@gmail.com, thanks
Dude, that is sweet. I have been looking on the internet for a couple of days now and yours is my favorite one. I have found alote of things like it but nothing like it at the same time. I dont know if that makes sence though. But, I was wondering if you could tell me how to build it. Your video gives me an idea of how but not a really good one.
@TheRandomHaloGuy hey thanks man! :) haha yah that makes sense....as for helping you build it, do you have any specific questions?? cause the "could you tell me how to build it" question is extremely broad and involves ALOT of information...more than i could type out in one sitting. and that would be why my video doesn't tell of how to build one lol, it would be a pretty long video :P
@codex653 try doing some research on the internet, its much better if you understand the coil vs just someone telling you how to build it, trust me:) ......what if something breaks or if you have to make modifications? i'm open to questions and happy to answer, but a step by step build plus troubleshooting help isn't really something i have the time for lol. that doesn't mean tho that i won't answer questions, it's just that the one you asked was a bit involved
@AHW214 hahah yah it definitely is! the way mine was set up, i had to have the pvc pipe which the primary was wound on in a spot that with any little nudging would make the secondary arc to it :P go figure haha
@codex653 ok, what kind of bulb is that, where did you get it, and how did you attach it? And, does it matter if you have the primary coil raped like you did or should it there be spaces on it. I have also discovered that sight deepfriedneon during my research.
@TheRandomHaloGuy bulb type is a simple lightbulb that you would use in your house, nothing fancy about it at all! :) i'm sure you would know where i got that..walmart!:D but i didn't buy it, i just had it laying in my garage. I attached it by sticking it inside the tube i was using for the secondary..it fit perfectly..i just had the wire at the top contacting the socket part of it.....there should probably be spaces on the primary to prevent arcing...i just did that as a quick set up, thats all
@zjdak11 well, instead of me just telling you everything, try going onto google or another search engine and look up exactly what you asked me:) it is much better to research than have somebody telling you how everything works:) just how i see things i guess....
@Grolvand, this was just a test to see what would happen if i would it like this...besides, this is a small coil and wasn't designed to give out 3 foot long sparks :P i was just building it to see if it would work
@codex653 , thanks a bunch! i have loads of them, and the singapore science centre, which i often visit , told me i couldn't. i guess they're not quite up to the standards, after all its a conductor i gotta ask them how could they be so stupid... lol
First of all i live in a country where u can not buy such things so i have a question what are the 2 things that look like a glass bottle.
blofeldist 3 weeks ago
would it work better if you took the glass surounding the bulb out of the equation
