This is a great performance and stands on its own. Srgio was alway a little commercial, but a great artist, who always gives more to the music than he takes.
This is a great performance and stands on its own. Srgio was alway a little commercial, but a great artist, who always gives more to the music than he takes.
The later english version, by Jobim performed eg in 1986 really isnt that different, except maybe for the keys. This version definately lives up to what Jobim himself might have liked :) I really prefer Sergios vocals in this one too :)
This is a cool arrangement especially for Americans. We love Sergio and his (always) beautiful singers. All star lineup of Brazilian players also. The Elis / Tom arrangement doesn't really groove.
It isn't quite Lani and Janice, but it is very good and highly evocative of the original Brazil '66. Sergio's arrangement is every bit as good as in those days.
The five string bass player is playing some cool licks in this video...the fifth string is one fifth lower than a regular bass...and it sounds really cool...
I have much love for the slower tempo, I'm good with it done both ways. Yes, Tom and Elis is the definitive version of this song but guys, Tom and Elis are DEAD, Sergio is still out there bringing this great music to new audiences. Gotta give it up to him for that.
@wgfinley - Yes, you are right. Sergio and those great musicians really captured the spirit of this song. These girls did a magnificent job on this. It is worthy of Brasil '66.
This song talks about theconsequences and issues about the Fall season in Central/northeastern Brazil. It happens during March/April/May. During that season, water is everywhere due to frequent rains and flooded rivers. The song lyrics mentions on problem after another one, despite the joy the water brings.
The lyrics lines are hard to memorize, it doesn't reapeat. It's 3 points thing: the swing, the lyrics and the beat. Not basic chords. It starts with Ab9/ Bb
But we can't deny that Sergio Mendes was an important man in the Brazilian music cause, with mixtures like those, he popularized the Bossa Nova even in Brazl, where the rythm is almost dying. With "Mas que nada", young people here started listening to Bossa Nova and now this rythm is growning up again.
abstract and interprets an inability to pay attention for any length of time...this is the hyper
active and ADD song of the century, but the rythmn is something that will capitivate you all day long.....just keep in mind....'it's the mud, it's the mud'...
Nononononononononoooooooooo, la versión de Elis Regina y Tom Jobim INSUPERABLE, además hay canciones que no pueden cantarse en otro idioma que no sea el original... con esta canción pasa eso, solo puede ser cantada en portugués.
For real---I heard this when I was a kid---always wondered who the heck it was---finally found out that it was Sergio Mendes, whose music I had come to love by then,as well as being the first version of this song I ever heard--it is beautiful and thoughtful, as well as funky and cool as hell---especially if you like Jobim's music and Brazilian music in genera---which I do and love!
Oldiesfan55 Tom Jobim and Antonio Carlos Jobim are one in the same. "Tom" is a nickname give to him by his adoring fans from his home country of Brasil.
Sadly..Tom passed away some years back..the entire country went into mourning. A prolific songwriter and musician.
This song is a classic Tom Jobim song and has been recorded by EVERYBODY who is anybody in Brazil. In fact, if you're a Brazilian singer and have not sung this song YOU ARE NOT BRAZILIAN!
5uffy: Scratch 'All My Tomorrows' (Sammy Cahn & Jimmy Van Heusen) from the list above. But add Jobim's 'Someone to Light Up My Life' and 'Once I Loved' as well as, for good measure, Riz Ortolani's 'More' and Trenet's 'I Wish You Love.'
Replying to my own post, this rendition just blows me away. Sergio's recorded it four or five times, starting with "Vintage '74" in a great version that included Jobim himself on guitar. That and Jobim's version with Elis Regina have been my two favorites. But this one blows them away. It's unusual in that it lacks the central instrumental break. Instead, it propels with a relentlessness that works really well with the lyrics. Gosh, this is great.
Now "I've" gotta reply 2 U! heh heh! REALLY? I didn't know that Sergio had a version of it with Jobim on guitar! Sounds awesome. Have to search it out. Can you tell me what set it's on? LOVE this song, and LOVE Sergio's work too! Just happened to stumble on 'this' and glad I DID!
because of lyrics mearurements and rhyms, English version is a little diferent of original brazilian one in Portuguese language. Some words in original have no same weigth when translated into English.
It's interesting that Jobim wrote both the Portuguese and English versions.
He'd be very proud of this rendition. Indonesia was so lucky to have Sergio visit with this tight and accomplished combo. Drums, percussion, bass, two girls, and Sergio on piano-- it's like Brasil '66 all over again, and I know no higher compliment.
That drummer is Mike Shapiro, a prominent and well-appreciated jazz drummer, one of the best of his generation. He's about to tour with Herb Alpert and Lani Hall and is the drummer of their new CD, "Anything Goes." He's incredibly talented.
5uffy: Among others, the original language versions of 'Desafinado'; 'One Note Samba'; 'My Way'; 'What Now My Love?'; 'It's Impossible'; 'Watch What Happens'; 'Autumn Leaves'; 'The Girl From Ipanema'; 'All My Tomorrows'; 'If You Go Away'; 'My Man'; 'Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars'; 'Yellow Days'; 'A Day in the Life of a Fool'; 'I Will Wait for You'; 'I Wish You Love'; etc., are better also. Sinatra; Ella; Bennett, Rod Stewart and the rest should have avoided singing them in English.
I found Que Reste-t-il Des Nos Amours to be kind of cheesy and campy in the original version by Charles Trenet. Most older french music doesn't hold up very well over time. In my opinion, that's the one on your list that doesn't belong.

This song lyrics makes a balance between the bad situation and the bad season when waters ( month of march ) ends the brazilian summer.
oposition side by side as life and death, joy and sadness, begining and ending, etc.

Aguas de Marco ( Waters of March ) originally by Jobim is a great song. Lyrics is very hard to be sang by heart.
since words are just scattered without standarts. It can easly mixed around in any verse along the song.
By the way, the female singers duo you see in this video are acctually americans and their Portuguese is quite good.
