I think part of Wise's problem is that he overlooks individual ability in affecting whether people are privileged. For instance, it is well documented that East Asians, on average, have higher IQ than whites. Unsurprisingly they are overrepresented in terms of academic achievement. This messes up Wise's theory because he assumes unfair institutions create unequal outcomes. Wrong. Ability is not equally distributed amongst people. Genetics create unfair outcomes.
Logical error there. Human rights are not dependent on ability. Also, I'm referring to group averages - not individuals. There is overlap in ability.
As for different history that is correct. But a basic principle of evolution is groups exposed to different environments may develop distinct genetic traits. That is apparent in group differences in physical & mental traits.

i'm a sociologist and i have to challenge your assertion that there is a biological component to intelligence. no race is inherently smarter than another. this has been proven through empirical scientific study. it is social conditioning and an unequal system of stratification in place that accounts for the majority of problems within the black race. if you took the dna of a racially diverse group of 30 individuals, you might be surprised at who would be genetically similar.

Yes I find him to generally be right, the # of black & brown folk in prison is ridiculously high (and disproportionate to the population) and there is a problem, but i dont think it was the Civil Rights Act that did it... and also he does not address gang culture, poverty, crime, violence? these issues are all intertwined.... and we have to look at larger issues then simply "drugs"

Yes the # of black folks&brown folks in prison is disproportionate, to the # of people actually using drugs, and yes incarcerating & criminalizing our drug users/sellers etc is a serious problem
but I think he oversimplified the problem in the names of giving an emotional speech

I don't challenge this guys statistics, but just mentioning violent crimes doesn't distinguish between murder and simple assault. The worse the violent crime, the more time someone does and the last time I checked, whites are not killing each other in record numbers.
His drug statistics don't distinguish between marijuana and crack. When was the last time you heard about someone committing property crimes to buy weed? There are greater policy interests behind enforcing laws regarding crack.

Policing methods vary and there are different criteria for reporting crimes. Country-to-country comparisons are not necessarily accurate.
For example, in the United Kingdom they used to only reported stats for crimes that were solved.

I think part of Wise's problem is that he overlooks individual ability in affecting whether people are privileged. For instance, it is well documented that East Asians, on average, have higher IQ than whites. Unsurprisingly they are overrepresented in terms of academic achievement. This messes up Wise's theory because he assumes unfair institutions create unequal outcomes. Wrong. Ability is not equally distributed amongst people. Genetics create unfair outcomes.

Tim Wise ignores the biological reality of race and how it affects peoples outcomes. If whites are so privileged and oppressing people, why do East Asians, on average, outpeform them in the US, Australia and NZ in academics? The reason, that Wise distorts, is due to biological predisposition for intelligence, and cultural factors. Wise buys the whole equality myth. Races are actually about as diverse as dog breeds - see Berkeley Professor Vince Sarich's book 'race: reality of human difference'.

Look up the Tang & Risch paper (Am. J. Hum. Genet. 76:268275, 2005).
Consistent with prior studies, the major genetic clusters consisted of Europeans/West Asians (whites), sub-Saharan Africans, East Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans. ethnic groups living in the United States, with a discrepancy rate of only 0.14%.
This clustering is a natural consequence of geographical isolation, inheritance and natural selection operating over the last 50k years since humans left Africa.

Tim Wise never mentioned that after 1964 , Lyndon created a series of welfare programs that would create an undesired welfare class within the black community. Tim never mentioned that civil right activists like Jesse Jackson pushed lawmakers to create harsher jail sentences for crack users as opposed to concaine users , believing that harsher jail sentences would impede the growing crack epidemic growing within poor black communities.

I have the deepest respect for you Tim Wise. You reached a level of group criticism that I do think I will ever achieve. As a man, I do not think I can do for women what you, as a white person, do for "people who are not white." One of the few among us who is not afraid to open their eyes. It is not that the truth is hard to find but we feel the responsibility it demands is too inconvenient.

Asians do well because of high iq. Asian-Americans, it was 106. Among Jewish Americans, it was 113. Among Latino Americans, it was 89. Among African-Americans, it was 85. Around the world, studies find the same general pattern: whites 100, East Asians 106, sub-Sarahan Africans 70. (Psychology, Public Policy, and Law, 2005, Vol 11, No 2, 235-294).

i'm a sociologist and i have to challenge your assertion that there is a biological component to intelligence. no race is inherently smarter than another. this has been proven through empirical scientific study. it is social conditioning and an unequal system of stratification in place that accounts for the majority of problems within the black race. if you took the dna of a racially diverse group of 30 individuals, you might be surprised at who would be genetically similar.

That's interesting, my understanding was that it indicated the differences could be partly genetic. In any case Linda Gottfredson's latest paper covers a lot of these issues and is available online at her faculty page (just google & look under the CV section, it's quite a lengthy read but interesting).
In terms of DNA the Gene Expression site covers the latest developments in this area. The main study I know of was by Tang & Risch at Stanford showed dna closely matchedself identifiedethnicity
