the viola does not get the credit it deserves i think it is the best of the bowed string family (yes even better then the cello sacrilege i know) but its such a beautiful instrument, i am a classical guitarist and i really want to pick this instrument up as a secondary
His whole performance has set viola playing on its head! His performance is truly the best viola performance I have ever heard {I just listened to his Bartok concerto as well - commanding, amazing bow control & dynamic tone production}.
This was not 'at all' what I expected! Firstly, I must agree with Somnusrei [earlier post] in that I, also, agree that "his fingers must be made of Russia and steel. I never heard the Ciaccona played so cleanly." Secondly, his viola has a sound which I never expected; it is [for me] very difficult to describe: it sounded "old", "a bit muffled" - in a 'chamber instrument' sort of way, sort of like a cross between a violin & a viola but definitely not the 'typical' viola sound. A small viola ?
holy... when I first clicked this link, I was prepared for the violin's tone. But, this... is something entirely different. You brought out the inherent darkness of the viola so well. It's moaning. It's sad. It's altogether the deepest thoughts of Bach.
Congratulations! You have done a superb interpretation of my favorite violin work. It is the best, since, perhaps, Emanuel Vardi. I like specially the way you play the lower notes. I'm very curious about the 2 part of the chaconne. It would be very nice to hear how that sweetest composition sound on this incredibly dark viola. Perhaps you could post it on you tube? Dobry khorosho! Spasibo!
I play the viola, and I know how difficult it is to get every note to sound clearly, especially on the lower register. Thank you so much for a beautiful recording!
Gracias por compartir el video, esta intensidad y entrega es dificil de encontrar. Un resultado brillante y mil gracias en nombre de los violistas!!!!!
Is this the whole chaconne? I thought there was like 6 minutes more

Viola is for selfish people who want to play both the cello and the violin... at the same time.

This guy is incredible, but it looks like he has some tension in his left hand. I hope he doesn't get tendinitis some day.

@jimipage69 Same actually, but I'm still torn on trying the violin or viola first.

@jimipage69 There is a rare beast called the alto violin that you may want to look into, but what do I know :)

@mjwynne01 right, usually one of the strings, during the harmonies, is killing the other. Very smooth indeed!
