you're close. socomfein mentions the step you're missing, but doesn't stress the importance. you need to add potash to the soil. Potash is just the ash from burned wood, im told you can use the ash from burnt paper. it has to be ash not charcoal. I'm guessing more is better? but other than that you got the rest right.

I think you have to ground it into a fine powder and mix it 2 part KNO3 and 1 part powdered sugar to really see if it works but it seems pretty easy so im gunna try hi method.

Actually you can try another method to make potassium nitrate.So here I'm gonna show how to make potassium nitrate. Fist you gonna need some fertilizers with blended potassium nitrate(actually they are compound, with phosphorus), take a bucket and fill in about 2-3 gallons of boiled water and 4-5 lbs of fertilizers and mix them well(or you can cook it). Slowly filter out the water and evaporate the water and it will form some yellowish crystals(KNO3). Notice:The water maybe smells like urea.

@mythbusterized don't know how you mange to get rid of the other components. Cause, usually fertilizers are all water soluble. Mean that so is the phosphorus. Soluble phosphate won't only dissapear just because u dissolves it. The only thing u can get is more pure ferilizer, cause u'll only filter the unsoluble particules (like sand). To do so, u have to combined ur phosphates to get unsoluble molecule n then filter it to get KNO3
