Anna Funder on fear and conservatism in government

Disappointing to say the least. I am a fan of Anna's work but this speech throws all logic out the window. Stick to research and writing books and articles.

And this is why in the West, and everywhere we should seek to limit the power of governments as much as possible. They are there for one thing only, to protect individuals from other individuals who wish to harm them or their property.

Stasiland is a great book but, this is a pretty silly speech. To say conservatives are the only ones to use fear is foolish. Here in the US,Obama is using fear over the economy to pass trillions of dollars worth of spending we can't afford. He's also using fear to bring about government control of the banking system of the US as well as "global orders" to "save" us from some unknown evil. You'd think that someone that did such great research on the far left East German regime would know better.
