  • Man, getting started in repair on these is really disapointing. I just got an elgin back together, it was running fairly well, dropped the movement while placing it back in the case and broke the roller jewel. God damn it!

  • @Polybun That truly blows and sucks at the same time. Somebody sells roller jewels on ebay but you have to give them the size you need. I do my work on a corrugated box resting on the table. The box brings the watch closer so I don't have to hunch over and as an added benefit less distance to fall if dropped. If you look at pictures of people working on watches in a factory the working surface is very high.

  • i can't get the back loose.do they make a tool for that?

  • @smoketir Is it a screw on back or snap on back? There is a knife like tool for the snap on back and a rubber grippy thing for the screw back.

  • thanks for the video, great stuff to watch when high! So fascinating!

  • @cheslavqweasd It is better that you watch my video when high than operate heavy machinery or drive a car.

  • I'm wearing headphones and when u coughed I shate

  • @stydel311 So what you are saying is that this video could be used as a laxative.

  • @bunnspecial lol.

  • Great video, purchased a circa 1886 and 1899 Elgin 18 sized watches that were in need of cleaning and minor adjustments. This video enabled me to make the necessary repairs and other makes with confidence. Greatly appreciated.

    Keep the videos coming.

  • I was wondering if you would sell that pocket watch?

  • @joshualancto Currently this watch is not for sale. While I have sold pocket watches before they were trades for other pocket watches. You should check out Ebay they have a tremendous selection or a flea market, that is where I bought this pocket watch.

  • What does "18 size" mean

  • @waveofthefuture2517 "18 size" refers to the size of the movement. In simple terms it is the outside diameter of the movement. 18 size is 1.766 inches. The watch people don't use inches, just a number, like the size of a shoe. They range from 20 to 0 (large to small) and then 2/0 to 18/0 (small to smaller). The Swiss use something called a Ligne. I got this information from a book.

  • Personally bunnspecial, i think you did a pretty good job on this video. I appreciate your effort to post a good helpful how-to here for all of us who love old watches. I wouldn't give too much thought to the poor dude who was complaining. I kind of feel sorry for him. impatient, easily frightened, rude, doesn't know the difference between a cough and a sneeze, but still manages to be rather arrogant. Sad thing is, there is always one or two like that on every posting.

  • Frankly speaking, I was irritated about your lack of patience while watching this video. It shows in your movements.

That *cough* at 6:40 scared shit out of me.

  • @messerJ4H My lack of patience was due to two factors. First, I did not know the amount of time needed to take apart a watch so I did not know if I had enough time on my camera, as I state in both parts 1 and 2. Second, when I made this video YouTube was giving me a max of 15 minutes for a video. At that time I did not have a video editor so I was trying to keep it under 15 minutes. Since I went over 15 minutes I had to get an editor to split it into two parts for posting. Cough happens.

  • great video, not too much on ebay about horology. keep making video's so i can learn more!!!!!!!!

  • great men

  • You are missing the dust band. There is a guy selling those on Ebay for 8$

  • @Waltham1892 I know the dust band is missing. It makes me happy when I get a pocket watch that has a dust band because then I know that it hasn't been worked on or who ever worked on it was good, he remembered to put it back on. I will have to look for that guy selling them on ebay, thanks.

  • I have to thank you very much for making this video, you're the first to make an understandable video for disassembling an american pocket watch

  • @ElginPocketwatch Thank you for your comment and for viewing. I looked on YouTube for a video showing someone taking apart a pocket wacth and when I did not see one decided to make a video myself. I hope to do one for a 16 size 3/4 plate watch.

  • @bunnspecial that would be helpful. I have a 16s three finger bridge but it has this weird metal bar jamming the case screw and because of that i cant remove the movement, Ive never seen anything like it.
