Lets face it guys, nothing new under the sun EXCEPT for his amazing phrasing, ideas, and technique which are uniquely him! How about Lets just enjoy that and learn from him.
hello guitar fans, who want to know the work of tb Mazin Silva, Brazilian guitarist, feel free to listen to Brazilian guitar,,,, Mazin SILVA (search youtube)
I've some of scotts CD's actually, and love Tore Down House, and Well To The Bone, also Thick with Tribal Tech was great. This over use of the whammy bar is just horrible though, and sounds like a very poor version of stuff from Jeff Becks Guitar Shop album. Also, Scott still needs a haircut.
@guitarmaan Beck doesn't play this heavy harmonic stuff, so apart from the use of a whammy bar and the blues / jazz backgrounds - they're way different. How about this - don't like it? Don't listen to it...
I'm not defending Guitarmaan's comment per se, but Scott is using his fingers a lot ala Jeff Becks signature of using his fingers only. And Scott does have a bit of the 'honk' in his tone that Beck is known for. I agree that Scott is more harmonically advanced and oh so yummy when he goes outside, but I can see where Guitarmaan can draw the similarities.
I agree with the guys who prefer the tension added by the microtonal pitch differences. Henderson says he has always admired slide guitar and wanted to emulate that sound.
Wow. This is truly mindblowing. Let's not forget he is getting this level of inspiration and intensity just playing to a backing track! Scott is amazing.
he really lost it since the 90's tribal tech days...now he just pulls at the bar like it's his dick, plays totally out...and no amount of personalized, vintage, expensive gear in the world can help someone who seems to have lost his sense of intonation
@BrianGuitarShred omg, u really dont know what u are talking about, do you? ''lost sense of intonation''?? hahahahahahahahahahhaha....at least (seeing your name), i hope u can appreciate shred music better
@BrianGuitarShred sorry english is not my mother language. to play "out of tune" and make it sound good u must have very high sense of intonation. if u are suggesting that henderson is not able to play intresting solos over chords then i think u must go do some homework on who henderson is and how high level of musical knowledge he has. he always knows 100% what he is doing.i see u cannt understand this kind of playing, its ok, your ears may not be experienced enough.return here after 5-10 years
@diasspeed I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT PLAYING OVER CHORD CHANGES. Henderson's INTONATION is off. I own several Tribal Tech albums and know just as well as anyone else how well he can blast through changes. But his use of quarter step bends for a "bluesier" feel is just being overdone and he just sounds out of tune...although he may very well be playing the right notes, he's not playing them at a consistent interval range and therefore sounding OUT OF TUNE.
@BrianGuitarShred He is doing that as an effect in much the same way Jeff Beck does. It is about tension and release. If you want perfect intonation on every note go listen to any song in guitar pro. You may not like it but it is intentional.
That was F*&KING AMAZING!!! What tone and playing...F&CK!
Scottie IS the shit!
It's as if Miles Davis, Jeff Beck, and Yoda had an alien-love-child, and the result was the all-knowing/all-playing/all-expressing Scott Henderson - LOL!
A lot of people are smart enough to be into jazz fusion, which is real music, and retarded at the same time for not being able to appreciate the good stuff out of that idiom...Im tired of reading about comparisons with coryel,carlton,johnson,morse...GET THIS!Scott is in a different level! All great players, but, can any of these guys even play changes in a legit way???NO!
Comparisons should be avoided in music but the only people in Scotts league are scofield, metheny and a couple more...
I have been listening to Scott since his early days with Jean Luc Ponty. He is extremely versatile, knows his instrument inside and out, and keeps getting better. His technique w/ trem bar (not the dives) is quite Jeff Beck-ish at times. At this level it is not a matter of anyone standing taller. They are masters of the instrument but have their own distinct sounds-Steve Morse, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Frank Gambale, Willy Porter, Pat Martino, just to name a few!
Scott grew up listening to especially bebop. Parker, Davis, Coltrane - horns, you know. And he has always been fond of using ears and learning from ear, so that makes very good sense he has this metals phrasing.
Man.. That was just F^ckin Epic!!! Oh and at a workshop haha.. Next thing that happens.. 100 former guitarists get together and drown their sorrows around a warm fire made from burning their guitars. You can have mine to get it started!
@ericlarkins Fusion, blues/jazz/rock-wise, yeah, no question at ALL. Coryell, however, would be tough to beat playing over an uptempo bebop standard, while Al is a much better at latin styles. All three are outstanding talents, man!
@ericlarkins I agree. But mainly because of note choices and phrasing. Neither Larry or Al have the kind of creative vocabulary to trade solos with Scott, for more than a couple choruses. Steve Morse and Eric Johnson could easily trade solos with Scott though, without becoming "disinteresting". But again, Scott would be the one with the most "groupies" at his back stage door :-)
@AxisofJustice21 well it loosens the strings, and allows you to bend easier. I know he plays 11 gauge strings. So it feels like 10s tuned standard, but you get a thicker sound. SRV did this (with 13s), as well as Jimi Hendrix. I never see jazz/fusion players doing this though.
Amazing! We should start a "Henderson 1. Each member buy at least three (3) albums @ amazon, each. 2. Attend local concerts (paying full price) 3. Each member pledges a "No-download" clause, stipulating an allegiance to certain artists, as Scott Henderson, that need support and an active loyal fan base. Without this type of loyalty this kind of talent will disappear.
@imatube2 Well, trial and error man. How do do you think they develope there own unique tone? And if you do the same you will find the same result's, so who care how they get there's, get your's man.
@NOTEWORKER007 But if you want to really know, there is a 2 minute interview with scott for the new suhr amp head he was using at namm where he explains that he turns back the tone to get the same tone when he switches from bridge to neck .
@imatube2 - Probably by boosting the mid-range frequencies (and turning down the treble). I saw a clip here once with Scott where he said he liked to turn down the treble on the guitar for the bridge pickup so that when he goes from the neck pickup to bridge, the transition is very subtle. Hope that helps.
Your comments about hearing Jeff Beck's style, technique & influence are right on the mark. Scott has mastered Jimi's style as well & uses his bag of tricks to remarkable musical effect. Jimi was first & all due honor, glory & respect to the celestial six-string king, but Scott has had more time (& is more disciplined) & better gear to perfect the craft. Scott appears to enjoy featuring his classic influences & don't we all dig it to the depths of our souls? He's our modern Shakespeare.
Probably the best guitarist of the post-Hendrix era to combine the modern tone and phrasing with bebob sophistication. He seems to just get better every year, I miss Tribal tech though. ( I think his students take him for granted,) he's a frickin' national treasure. This is solo so smokin!
Unreal improvisation .. I think he makes beck look like a novice. His tone is a bit similar to Beck or Eric johson and he makes real good use of the major scale during the 4 chord but thats where the similarities stop
I wouldn't go and say anything along the lines of him making Beck look like a novice. Scott names Jeff as one of his top influences! They also play completely different styles.. Scott uses his whammy bar this way, while Jeff uses it the way that Scott COPIED off him like every other whammy bar player. But Jeff and Scott are in my top three favorites, so not dissing Scott at all :)
You're saying he makes Jeff Beck look like a novice? You do realize that not only do they both play very different styles, but that Scott cites Jeff as a HUGE influence on his playing? They both use the whammy bar in the way that they see it fit, but just remember who was using it first and where Scott got some of the tricks he uses with it.. same with Steve Vai and if you ask Steve, he'll tell you the same thing. Nothing against Scotty though because he's in my top 3 favorite players :)
This guy's so humble! I shared a beer at a club called The Backstage here in Seattle like 8-10 years ago. He was so free with his information and so incredibly excited to share how he could pull off these amazing phrases, tones, etc. When I think of Scott Henderson, 1st thing is his breath taking phrasing! That was a magical night.
my comment was way too brief, to sum scott's playing up so i apologise, i was in a bit of a rush at the time watching the video at work. it sounded a bit obtuse. he is of course an amazing player and i should clarify that.
Tonetubs, I think it's his handbuilt Suhr 100w head. I think it's basically a Plexi with a Master Volume. Google Suhr, they make his guitar too. Ridiculously expensive, but fantastic gear.

Beck with a few jazz chops. His timing is phenomenal

A few?!

yeah, beck with a teeny tiny amount of basic jazz chops playing 'all blues'.
well, maybe i'm subjective, but to me there's a little more to scott henderson than your statement. no offense, though.

my comment was way too brief, to sum scott's playing up so i apologise, i was in a bit of a rush at the time watching the video at work. it sounded a bit obtuse. he is of course an amazing player and i should clarify that.

Tonetubs, I think it's his handbuilt Suhr 100w head. I think it's basically a Plexi with a Master Volume. Google Suhr, they make his guitar too. Ridiculously expensive, but fantastic gear.

@theangusburger: listprice is $ 4500. How is that ridiculous ?
It's a great quality instrument.

he really does take this to just another level. and he sounds so damn close to Jeff Beck, but he's doing his own thing completely at the same time.
maestro Scotty.
