Could it be that my firewall is blocking it?

I typed my ip and tried it with just a simple message and this thing came up saying: An error occurred while sending a message to (my ip)

The message alias could not be found on the network

No. It sends a cleartext message which Messenger Service displays on the computer. This only works on 2000 and XP.

well you eneter your friends IP adress and sent him a message. Thats all. FIRST YOUR FRIEND HAS TO TELL YOU HIS IP. FIREWALL MAY EFFECT THE PROCESS!!!

Because the firewall may think it is a virus!

Actually it's cause the firewall blocks the ports Messenger Service uses which are UDP ports 135, 137, and 138 and TCP ports 135, 139, and 445. Firewalls do nothing to block viruses.
