just wondering how you'd find the sound from the external mic compared to just using the internal one on the zi8? thanks

It's certainly better but not that huge of a difference. The Sony ECM is a $50 mic on amazon and it's about $50 better I would say than the internal mic for the Zi8. The Sony ECM has a wider tonal range and sounds thicker and fuller but it certainly is nothing spectacular when compared to more expensive and professional mics. I like it because it's small and once attached to the Zi8 the camera still looks unassuming unlike some other mic attachments I have seen people use on their Zi8.
