Yes it would work, it just needs more power in the legs. BUT it would never beat a wheeled vehicle.

yes it would. legs have less speed, BUT legs are much better on different terrains. much better at going uphill, etc. i'd like to see a remote control car go through that obstactle course

Why don't you turn the legs around? Wouldn't that work better?

if they do that, the legs could dig into the ground, and get stuck, much easier to swing them around this way

Perhaps you're right.  It seems they could bend just the tips of the legs back into the opposite direction or something to get better traction and keep the legs from slipping so much.
