Never ever trust a person who cuts hair when it's tied in a pony tail to cut it shorter. They have no proper control over how short it'll end up being.

When I had really long hair aged 10 (more than half way down my back), the hairdresser tied it in a ponytail after telling him I want it shoulder length, so just below my shoulders, and because of the ponytail he cut it like a bob. I was so angry and my hair took years to grow to a real shoulder length.
