Sure Tails gets hit in the special levels and it's super annoying, but he only picks up rings that you missed, so in the end, even if he only gets 1 extra ring, he's helpin' you out.

Now what's REALLY annoying is when you jump and Tails swaps in front of you. I F'in hate that!

Yeah, Tails is kinda annoying...unless someone controls him with a 2nd Controller and knows what they're doing. He can really cost you in Special Stages, you are right about that. I have found that the best way to get through the zones is to make sure that SONIC has enough rings. Forget about Tails.

Also, Sonic 2 introduced the ability to get "perfects"--ALL the rings in a level--which gave you 50,000 points. Having 10,000 points would give you a continue.

I have gotten "perfect" in, I believe, the Emerald Hill Zones, The Chemical Plant level 2, and the Mystic Cave--one of them, anyways.

And I saved the last emerald for the last level, when I really needed it.

Before you begin: options, switch to Sonic Alone. Makes bonus stages 100 times easier because Tails isn't there to screw you up, and they lower the ring count you need. Now I can get all 7 emeralds before the first boss.

The idea of having "lives" in video games should be obsolete by now. I'm surprised it isn't. Lives have meaning on a coin-up where you'd have to insert another coin after you've lost all lives. But at home, what's the point of lives? We all know what you're gonna do after losing them all. You're gonna start the game up again - for free.
