All of this sounds very good for Turkey and bad or Iran and Israel when you think about it. Turkey stepping away from Israel and imposing sanctions on it would make Turkey the true "superpower" in the region and take away the power Israel had in the region as a "bully" of sorts as well as the power grab Iran's been trying to get as a tyrant in the region. Arabs will see a strong TR as a Muslim role model against tyrannic gov'ts and force the US to be closer to Turkey than Israel in the region.

i don't know if it is wise to depict the US as condoning Turkey and its recent gestures in the region, for clearly we know of their intent which is to establish a strong image in the Arab world, which is fine, but up to a point. It is the current administration's task to balance out relations in the region so we can leave a stabilized middle east. At the same time Turkey making these moves may make Israel more willing to make concessions in the peace process, which is imperative to leave Iraq.

Neither do the Turks have the oil wealth of the Gulf Sheikhdoms. Their biggest trading partner Europe is entering into a protracted period of economic contraction, so that will have a negative impact on Turkey too.

As far as extending patrols into the Eastern Mediterranean, what's Turkey going to do - have a naval clash with Israel?

Personally i think the whole region was much better under Ottomans and Turkey, before WWI and British / French colonialism, Arabic (and other) nationalism and that whole mess.

In WWII both sides tried to take Turkey on thier sides, the Italian attempt on Suez channel (backed up by Germany) and support for the uprising in Iraq was about to convince Turkey as well. On multiple ocassions Britain and even soviets tried to persuade Turkey diplomatically.
