My protestant friends don't understand why Catholic Masses often have horrifying sounding movements such as this. I ask them what part of, "O King, O King of awful and terrible majesty," they don't understand. The very concept of God is supposed to be horrifying; it is horrifying. It is not supposed to be a comforting idea. The Good News of Christianity is that this terrifying entity happens to *like* us.
there is major clipping, did the OP run this through a pre-amp before re-encoding it or something to screw up the dynamic range or something? only reason why I had to hit dislike :|
I know Gardiner and Marriner, and while being much more respectful of the original and technically correct they sound less powerful and forceful.
This piece is technically awful, no debates (the choir!). Why do we like it? I guess we are people with no musical education, and judge this piece from other parameters than technique. I think this version is kind of more "appropriate" to express that epic and terrible scene that is the Apocalypse. Conceptually good, philologically horrible. Full stop.

Did Karajan fall out of the favor of the snobs at The Classical Review?
@georgefrazier1967 This is less adherent than others. Nonetheless, it is better. It sounds better. It recreates the nightmarish Judge better than versions with faster (or even slower) tempo. It's like the Celibidache's version of Verdi's Requiem. They may be less adherent to how the piece originally sounded, but they bring the message in the most powerful of ways. It was the answer to all those who were ranting "oooo this is so uncorrect!", which you can well find in previous pages.
@ubmk1 I think that the best interpretation of this sequence is the way the chorus say "rex" and "salva me" where the majesty of God compared to the mortality of human is shown.
It is slower but it helps to concentrate on every moment of this glorious piece of music. I can't believe that such a genius as Mozart was died so early and in such an obscurity
Definitely the best version. Karajan conducted this unbelievable piece of art in a slow and majestic way. And also the "salva me" is interpretated in a way I never heard before. My deepest respect.
Well obviously that was an inspired response. But seriously, the tempo of this rendition sucks all the feeling out of it, not to mention the poor levels. Mozart would probably be vaguely amused by his work in such a form.
@DEC0RAX0 1st, I tell you...we don't know shit about Mozart's technical thinking, and for me, it's a kinda Wien-style performance. /Do not forget, its conductor is Karajan.../ Will you tell me more information about "the poor levels"? I simply don't get it. ^_^
@StevenShields29 It's not the choir or Karajans fault you muppet....it's the sound engineer!! They have been dreadfully miked, that's why they sound so brittle in comparison to the orchestra.
@gh103 You seem to know nothing about choirs. There is a difference between a good choir miked poorly and a poor choir miked poorly. This choir may be miked well or poorly, I just don't care for the tone quality--and lack of blend.
This is a truly shitty performance. Someone commented on a Gardiner recording post that we should listen to Karajan if we wanted a laugh. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. What a pathetic atrocity von Karajan makes of this piece!
@StevenShields29 take your 18th century reproduction violin out of your ass, the Gardiner version is amazing, and so is this. It is sad how some people have lost their ears by listening to academic discourses over proper performance technique instead of music in general. I can guarantee that if you ask Gardiner his opinion, he may tell you that he prefers to interpret this or that a different way, but he'd never be as ignorant as to imagine that Karajan didn't do his most sincere.
@Cancrizans What an appropriate name! Crabs are known for not only their nastiness small brains as well! If you look through my comments, I do not mention criticism of modern instruments. I am not a period-instrument freak, so your first comment merely displays your knee-jerk reaction and complete lack of thought. I'm sure Karajan put his utmost into every one of his performances. Note, I merely state that the choir, a VERY different thing from an orchestra, sounds horrid. You are a fool.
This song make me remember that the music has been art. I don't understand why today people listen to bullshits... Where is the real music ??? Thanks Mozart, what power in this tragedic song, it's simply wonderfull.
"The literature of religious experience abounds in references to the pains and terrors overwhelming those who have come, too suddenly, face to face with some manifestation of the mysterium tremendum. In theological language, this fear is due to the in-compatibility between man's egotism and the divine purity, between man's self-aggravated separateness and the infinity of God."
This is the best version in my opinion. Slower than others, and, probably thanks to that, absolutely majestic and striking (remember, it's a Rex Tremendae Majestatis deciding the fate of the universe ). The second part is beautiful as well: the prayer ("salva me, fons pietatis!" ) is almost whispered, merely an impotent pleading to a Judge whose decision is inquestionable. Atheists, Catholics, everyone, admire how human mind, godly inspired or not, can create such beauty.
@churcillcrocodile Are you fucking kidding?! Are we listening to the same recording? Do you like the sound that comes out of the choir (notice, I didn't say 'music') even on the first note?!
I will concede the fact that Karajan's rendition is only second to Mozart's own. I agree that Atheists and Religious-folk should just agree on the fact that some of the most talented people in history were driven by godly influence.
@churcillcrocodile Slower than others, probably thanks to that, absolutely striking and majestic. Catholics, Atheists and everyone can admire how the mind, inspired by god or not, can create such beauty (remember, it's a Rex Tremendae Majestatis having decided the fate of the universe).
Mozart is a miracle!! Just look at the fact that he produced 626 known works (first one at the age of 8!!!) under a life time of 35 years. At seven years he could play any piece whatsoever from the notesheet. Amadeus means "loved by God". He was indeed, cos his music is divine and salvation. "Mozart is the Christ of music" - Pjotr Tjajkovskij
Nothing can truly describe this overwhelming masterpiece! Feels like a floating wave of emotion that gently overwhelms you with its tremendous energy. Wonderfull!
