Wish ol' Larry had done more of this when I was forced to watch him as a kid. I first heard this song on a record by Larry McNeely, one of the 5-string banjo players who appeared on the Glen Campbell show. He did it in G, but note for note. Pretty impressive.
Yes, I couldn't agree more. Also in that list should be Johnny Klein, Pete Lofthouse, Curt Ramssy, Kenny Trimble, Buddy Hayes and even Bob Lido who could play a mean violin jazz riff. Of course, there's many more.
I agree! And don't forget Dick Cathcart ("Pete Kelley"),Gus Thow (played with the original Dorsey Brothers Band), Skeets Hurfurt (also in that band),Jack Martin, Art DePew (went on to lead the Harry James Orchestra), Russ Klein (never played a bad solo!), Neil Levang, Don Bonet (played with Jack Teagarden), Big Tiny Little (a light touch for such a big man), Jimmy Henderson (Dorsey Bands and went on to lead the Glenn Miller Band, and Charlie Parlato Sp?)could swing when they let him.
It's written that the Welk orchestra wasn't really a swing band. I argue the point with my fellow musicians on occasion. Thanks for presenting an excellent point for my case. Welk could swing with the best especially with a versatile player like Bill Page. Fabulous footage. Keep 'em coming!!
I wouldn't mind having that guy's white Strat. Yummy!

Pretty hot for Welk's band all right. I was expecting a bubble machine solo...

Just watched this clip for the first time!
Bill Page had his own LP on the DOT
label not long before Lawrence signed with that company. Wish I could find it.

What's interesting is that Page almost exactly copies Benny Goodman's solo from the original 1945 Sextet recording of the tune.

Everybody copies the Goodman´s solo :o) Even E. Urso
