When I was 13 James Dean changed my life. He was there at the start of youth culture, Rock&Roll, the 1960s counter-culture, and everything that sprang from that. I wish teenagers today weren't into people with no talent like the Spice Girls, thinking of money, 'bling', or being a pimp like Snoopy Doggy Dog, and instead read some books, watch some decent films & listen to music with some meaning... the world would be a better place, with a future to look forward to.

@kidcalabria I do have to say that you can't judge every "teenager today" like this. I'm not into all the crap they call "good music" today. I'm only 17, and I get told by several people that I should've been born during this time. Elvis Presley is my hero, obviously by my youtube name. Johnny Cash is also my hero. The Beatles rock. What's so great about James Dean? He made 3 movies, mostly playing sullen teens who's scripts were mumbles, shouting, or shrugs. No high flights of memorable lines or literary value. A nice face, but so what -that's a dime a dozen in H'wood. He's totally overrated and was systematically marketed as a rebel icon, bought hook-line-and-sinker by the gullible, who imagine their own forms of rebellion are thereby validated. But they are merely sheep following another fad.

i actually agree with you, even though i'm a fan. most of dean was systematic. not only by directors and other professionals, but by himself. he knew what would work, and i'm sure most of what he presented to the world wasn't him, just like any other actor/actress. he was tragic on purpose.

24 isn't old, but I think what gets people the most is the fact that his life was cut so short just after he was gaining momentum from East of Eden. So there's always this factor of unfulfilled potential that people will wonder about. And it's not like he wasn't popular b4 his death; he had great talent, sex appeal & vulnerability as an actor to which I'd take any day over Franco. And his sexuality is relevant because..? 50+yrs since his death & ppl are still talkin about him- that's charisma.
