Originally, what we now call "India" was many many smaller countries, each with their own language, subsets of gods (within the broader Hindu pantheon), and local governments. The British united the area over a period of decades, forging from it their great Indian Colony. When the British left, the area that they once controlled split into modern Pakistan and India.

But the individual kings of the original countries remain.
