When throwing a hook off the leading hand, surely you need to bring the shoulder back a little first? In this video, the hook is thrown off the leading hand, straight from the ready position. This would only connect if the head of your opponent was already right next to your lead hand - which it wouldn't be, unless you were practically nose-to-nose. I can see that it works after the 1,2 punch, but that's because you already would have your left arm cocked because of the right straight.
Looks great, so few people understand how the hook is supposed to be throw. The wild, looping punches you see in street fights have almost no power and are easy to deal with while a proper hook is a thing of beauty. Nice video!
I still can't throw the hook -- I feel like the opponent is always out of range. The hook usually follows the long-range right cross, so how can I the hook even reach the opponent if my arm is curved 90 degrees and I'm shifting my weight back? It seems impossible
@theguyi26 Try moving in close behind your jab or after you throw a straight right. It is difficult to manage striking range and takes practice. The hook needs to be thrown quickly, if you drill it and drill it against a bag it will eventually become almost a reflex action. Work slow at first focusing on techinque and the speed will come and then it's much less difficult to time.
This hook looks too clean. Like its martial arts specific. It doesn't look as devastating as the hooks I have seen street fighters throw. Good video though, gives me an idea.
The fist is turning wrong... The back of your fist should be facing your target, and all 4 knuckles hitting the target. Sometimes you could slip and only hit with your ring fingers knuckle or pinky fingers knuckle, and it hurts like crazy.
@yogigolle Doesn't matter which way your palm is, different people like it different ways. I will say the way you say to do it is better for close hooks though, while the way he does it is better for a long hook.
yeah...this guys' great at explaining the hook. punching is ALL about body mechanics/hip-movement. too many people punch from the arm making the punch much much weaker
shite - watch bas rutten for a proper instructional, why does he say lean back when throwing the hook, never lean back and throw a punch, step across but not back.
@martymcelroy bas rutten does not know the first thing about boxing instruction, hes powerful but not technically good with his hands. Many boxing coaches teach to transfer the weight to the back foot for the lead hand hook to unweight the pivot foot a bit.Sometimes in kickboxing i'll step across with the back leg.
this guy demonstrates a perfect left hook and he does know what hes talking bout obviously u dont. And you do step in when u throw the right cross only when u step in with the jab. step in with the jab and drag ur right foot into the cross and the left hook is thrown short palm down weight on back foot
@KWall10 youll never be able to land it without a shitload of sparring and isolation drills with a coach. All technique that works is very simple, the timing to land it is very hard to achieve.
when you get knocked out from a hook, it is not usually cos of the brain bouncing around. it is because there are so many nerve endings in your chin and if you get hit there hard it overloads the brain and causes it to shut down
dude, your CNS is located right behind the jaw. When you get smashed in the jaw the jaw bone smashes into the CNS causing a massive dissruption of the electic signals to and from the brain. landon04 is right on the money.
teaches you, punches, kicks, elbows, knees, grappling, chokes, all that good stuff. i think its a combination of everything, so it IS the best :P well in my opinion
Why the fuck do people think MMA trained guys are suddenly incapable of attacking eyes, throat, or groin? Or that boxers couldn't attack the throat or punch the groin? In fact, I'd bet they can do it far more effectively than 99% of self proclaimed no rules fatass "street fighters" out there who couldn't box for 2 rounds without passing out.
it IS the best for the street... do you really need to go to a class to learn how to poke someone's eye out, kick them in the nuts, or throw a chair at them?
Eye gouges and other street defense situations aren't allowed in the UFC and other MMA Competitions, but are taught in most MMA schools. (If not, they should be.)
Our Pro-Star MMA schools incorporate some self-defense scenarios into their training.
@poorchristopher15 Because they require no technique. Want to eye gouge? Throw a jab with an open hand. Want to lowblow? Throw any strike to the groin. Simple shit.
If not the chin then the ear or temple. Those 3 spots are typical of a hook knockout. Every punch can knock someone out, its a matter of how you go about it that makes you a fighter.
because when you drop your weight to the rear foot, providing you're hooking with the lead hand, your force comes from the axis of the body. That means lead shoulder, lead hip, and center point mass are all landing on one point. Lead uppercuts work the same way. Before you go calling people stupid you should do a little research.
ahh i was doing the sloppy and dangerous hook lol, I thought it was pissweak hence why I looked up this video. I need to practice transferring my weight quickly and throwing accurate punch, and possibly fitness too, get real sloppy after a while thanks for the info
You always need a straight fist in order to maintain the structural integrity of your arm and prevent a fracture of the 4th and 5th metacarpals, otherwise known as a "boxing fracture."
I'm not sure what you mean by thumb down, and "for the jab." I'm not sure what you mean. Please elaborate. Thanks,
@ProStarMMA When you throw a hook should my palm be facing towards the ground or facing inwards to my chest. That is what he means and I'm not so sure either - thanks!?
@tmxlantm Here's what you should do - You clench your fist sideways, and flex as hard as you can. You arch your back only just a little bit, and then throw with all your muscle (On your fighting arm) and make sure you hit the jaw. A garunteed end. He's either knocked out, broken jaw, holding it while giving up, or is almost down, that's when you throw another one the same way with the other hand.
Message me back if you think this is great. You're welcom! by the way! :)

noooo not cause of nerve endings
u have very little number on your chin .
if that was the case u would get nocked out if u got punched in the hand cause it has the most nerve endings

I have a question someone please answer.
Why aren't eye gouges or LOW BLOWS like krava maga taught in MMA?
People say MMA is the greatest for street defense yet eye strikes are not taught.
Many experts say that Eye strikes and dirty moves are the BEST for the street yet they are excluded from MMA..
Thanks
poorchristopher15 2 years ago
Because MMA is a sport, it is NOT some no-holds barred barbaric no-technique street fight crap. Thats why.
ph133710101 2 years ago 4
If MMA does not revolve around barbaric street crap then why are people saying MMA is the Best for the Street??
Isn't that already a contradiction??

Or is it more on pressure points? (Like where you place the hit)
