It's sad that a lot of 1960's groups weren't able to continue singing for years to come. I've been a huge Bee Gees fan for 47 years. The reason they continued (until Maurice's death), is they had to re-envent themselves, as Barry Gibb had said in interviews. Groups/singers today don't seem to have the talent as those in the 60's.
Outstanding! I played their "Greatest Hit's" 8 track tape(over and over) on a trip to Dayton, Ohio in 1971. I was with my younger brother, and I was driving my new Opel GT. Great memories, thanks for the video.
@mstyles2 I wore out my Craig Pioneer 8 track with the 2 tapes I had. Gary Puckett and Buddy Holly. I had the Union Gap tape for over 8 years before it finally broke. My favorite/worst memory was jumping into my 1970 Chevy Nova in Orlando to drive to Birmingham Alabama to pick up my sister from college and bring her and her broken down Plymouth Valiant home. I didn't get out of the Orlando city limits before getting pulled over and ticketed for speeding. Right in the middle of Young Girl.
I saw this great man in concert in Blackhawk, CO singing this live. God what a trip, He is so great. I'm 60 now and still love all his music, Thanks for putting his songs on here. Thanks so much.
Great voice. Second (living performers) to BJ Thomas. They are actually appearing together in May in Holland, MI. I'm a die hard Buckeye, but will be crossing the border for this one!
Tell all of you something...Gary Pucket was then and is now... simply the GREATEST voice in all of pop music...bar none! No one sings like this guy, no one sings the songs this guy did. I'm sure there will be some who disagree with me and that's fine...but just remember, Gary Pucket's voice and songs have stood the test of time! Here we are 30 years later and HE and HIS MUSIC are still as great as ever! You're watching the greatest voice in pop music history right here!
@Kenny12554 Still great after 42 years in a singing career. I first heard him on A.M. radio, in September, 1969. I've met and seen him three times in concert. Very kool performer and an expert at what he does. His music brings back lots of neat memories of early childhood.
@Kenny12554 I agree with you--his voice is a force of nature. I'm a singer and he's my idol. Did you ever listen to his singing O HOLY NIGHT? I get chills listening to it--best recording of a xmas song by any modern singer. This man and his voice have aged gracefully.
He is really good here but I have seen him in concert and he looks so bored sing his old songs and it comes through his voice. In some occasions he almost talks through the song, instead of sing it. I know he has the ability. Watch him come to life on a religious tune, or like this video, when he really fires up. He sounds like the ole Gary we all love.
Anyone who's interested in hearing an entertaining and in-depth interview with my friend's uncle, Gary "Mutha" Withem of Gary Puckett & the Union Gap should come check it out on iTunes (keywords = Mutha Withem). Enjoy! :-)
@clandestineone Hey Clandestineone, i'm kinda an old music historian. I'm curious where does gary puckett (Withem) live? , does he still still sing regularly?I'm always curious what ever happened to certain entertainers. Your response would be much appreciated, thanks.
@jeffsor47 ---> He lived and taught music here in San Diego for many years, but fairly recently moved with his wife to Indiana, where, I gather, he's heartily enjoying his retirement years :-)
He's on FaceBook as "Gary Withem", if you'd like to befriend him...
@jeffsor47 ---> And, just for the sake of clarity, we're talking about Gary Withem (aka "Mutha"), not Gary Puckett. From what I understand, Gary Puckett is still touring and releasing music, while Gary Withem is very much retired :-)
Forgert the music issues for a second.Think about the message of this great song.Gary seems to know EXACTLY what a guy goes through when he`s losing his appeal to his girlfriend...when she`s simply not interested in him anymore.I`ve been there...I know.I`m serious about what I say now.You have to go to the great writers-like Shakespear- to find this kind of human insight.Kudos to Gary for this brilliant achievement.
The main problem with this rendition is not Gary's singing it's the band they are playing it way too fast and not giving him time to breath or phase or anything. A guitar player can go as fast as his fingers will take him , a singer has to breathe. He still made it work, which shows his level of showmanship.
@vampyros1 So glad someone appreciates the band for their contibution to the song. It's all about the singer these days. What ever happened to the talented musicians. Now they are merely faceless, nameless statues on stage now.
@mrmusic1953 I hear you; seems like these days real musicianship all too often gets supplanted by samplers, sequencers, and bad rapping. And this isn't merely generational sour grapes, it's the truth. It's a pity that some take the gift of true musicianship for granted, esp. when it's so rife with expressiveness and soul.
@mrmusic1953 Good point about the musicians. The American idol mentality is that only the singing counts. However the drummer here is heavy handed (and probably half deaf) and poor Gary has to fight him to be heard and to hear himself. I know. I've sang live and drummers who don't sing just don't get it. And they have damaged my ears.
Really enjoyed this video. Gary Puckett still has an incredible voice. Saw him perform several years ago and he is a very nice man. Still have the T shirt and picture. Good memories.

@TheAMKrew - I grew up with the sounds of Gary Puckett. I was reading the comments and came across yours. I'm sorry for your loss. I hope this video brings a smile to you with wonderful memories of your grandpa.
Gary nailed every note, his rich lows and his top notes as well. It is amazing how the voices from so many years ago have held up. Engelbert, Tom Jones, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Frankie Valli- All near or in their 70's. They all sound great.
looks like gazza will be here in oct–nov (here being melb, aus): palais theatre (2 min walk from my house) and the palms @ crown (casino). he does have a great voice.. still gets plenty of radio time.
I think he sound just fine for his age. NOBODY sounds the same in their 60's as they did in the 20's & as long as you aren't embarrassing yourself out there go ahead and sing even if you've lost some range. I sing and I'm in my mid 40's and I can't hit the same notes I could 15 years ago. You adjust.
I worked with Gary for a nice stretch in the 80's and I can tell you he's a class act, offstage, as well. He's a real gentleman, and those brilliant hits will live as long as people remember and appreciate quality and that majestic voice of his - wide as the sky, and just as timeless.
@pyannaguy I agree with you, he is a class act. Gary was married to my sister, Shannon, for about 8yrs in the late 60's. He was a wonderful brother in law & friend.
@tomye06 - Cool, tomye, I'll always look back on my brief tenure with Gary as something of a personal "Golden Age." You're a class person as well, judging from your comment.
Hey we all Get Old Dude.... But I'mm sorry the Sprit of his Song is still there.... And let us not forget, Live is never like Music done in a studio.... There still Great in my Opinion....You Go Gary
I saw him in concert several times in Charlotte NC, He has the voice but there have been times he just halfway sings his songs, sometimes he almost talks through the songs. Here he actually sings it, and does a good job. I know it is hard to sing the same songs for 35 years. Watch his eyes and voice when he sings a spiritual song, he really comes alive.
it is NOT that small birch Taiwan drum shell , it is the half deaf house-mix engineer, or the room acoustics, etc. or the recording of said drum. do you really think you are hearing the drum ?
Is it just me or are the drums just totally wrong on this one? Maybe he should just stuff a towel in the bass drum to soften them a little. I don't know but the drum is clumsy and too loud.
Several throat surgeries and being 65 years old would make you struggle to sing well, too, i'm sure. He still sounds amazing for everything he's been through.
I dedicated this song to my first true girl friend. God, I loved her so! She cheated on me and broke my heart into tiny pieces. It took over a year and another beautiful young woman to put it back together again. Where are you Noreen Jones?

This is Tarrytown in New York? I live in Fishkill, not too far away. I thought he was from the UK. Music from that era is so good, I find from youtube.

Good to see him looking so fantastic and sounding good, but the band is terrible.
