@FlossBandit EVGA GTX 560. Buzzes slightly when not gaming (barely at all, varying noise depending on what I'm doing) when gaming, slightly louder. I have to pretty much put my ear up to the case to hear it though.
@BOMBhollywood oh god that's why i'm here. the framerate jumps to almost 3000 in the menu and that's when it squeals. v-sync fixes it but the fact that i know it's there gets to me.
@BOMBhollywood Are you kidding? haha, me too. Bad xbox port game haunts psu or graphics card because it wanted to be xbox exclusive? anyways man, played alan wake and it sucked.
I have the same problem. I thought it was my video card because when I run a video game or do a video test like window experience score test, it usually starts. Now I know what it is. How do I fix this? Is there anything said about this on the Corsair website? Also could this be capacitor squeal or are we getting goo Japanese capacitors? I have the Corsair TX750.
Glad you made this video. Got a Corsair TX650M that was screaming.. I thought it was the caps on my motherboard, put my ear next to the back of the PSU and heard it was from there... Damn... so RMA-ing it does nothing? - I have a a few fans running and a water cooled CPU, in silence it is noticeable
An older AMD system with an ATI card used to leak sound into my speakers whenever I moved anything on screen (weird EMI thing or ???). That was annoying... this I can live with if it isn't damaging.
I had this problem with my old psu, was 500 watts. Always made a loud crackling noise when ever any 3d applications were in use. Bought a new 750 watt, problem went away.
My 285 GTX has been doing this for ages. I just turn the volume up so I don't hear it anymore, or -when possible- increase the graphical options.
I dislike vsync usually, because I feel the mouse responses way better at higher fps. And some games function differently with high fps. (CoD4 125, 250 or 333 fps for example).
@cxgamer@VideosVonDennis do not let it continue squeeling if like the squeel in this video. it will most likely result in your psu catching fire. Happened to mine. I have absolutely no solution to this problem. I am only my 5th 950watt corsair psu now, at first it is fine; then this happens.
@larry365 I sometimes get a 0x00000101 BSoD. Do you think the problem may have something to do with squealing? I'll first see fps lag and hear audio noise (got it on vid), followed by a crash if I do not quit the game. In some games, or just windows, it doesn't happen.
Ok the squeal sound in your video is terrible but your overall sound volume of the PSU under load seems to be ok... my PSU is 20 time loader under load.. no squealing but load like a hair drier. I think I must RMA my PSU. :(
My Gainward "Phantom" GTX 580 3GB was silence until I removed the stock cooler and added a waterblock. Now when I play games, I can hear the infuriating squeal noise coming from GPU or PSU (can't quite tell at this stage).
PLS help I just finished my new build and when i play high graphics demanding games such as Crysis 2 on max setting with dvx 11 or WoW on max with dvx 11 both games make my psu scweals. I have also blue screened after a shutting down down the game. I am using a Seasonic x series 850 wat gold to power my Radeon HD 6950 2gb and Intel i7 2600k along with a Asus Maximus IV extreme edition and lastly a corsair h100. Pls help is it not putting out enough juice to power my rig ?
@Benfro89 Are you overclocked? - try stock clocks on everything on a fresh install. Pause your blue screen to see the error. Could also be a memory issue (or a bajillion other things... but let's start there).
I had the same problem. I opened up my PSU and THERE WAS A FREAKING HORNETS NEST IN THERE! I GOT STUNG 20 TIMES. MY FACE SWELLED UP TO THE SIZE OF A PUMPKIN! IF YOUR PSU MAKES A NOISE LIKE THAT, SET IT ON FIRE AND THEN DROP IT IN A LAKE.
My power supply also squeals/whines, but only when i'm in an in-game menu. Never while running 3d/ when it's under load. BTW i have a Cooler Master 850m :/
12V power rail supplying the vid card is overloaded. time to get a higher specced PSU? same noise happens if you fully load the CPU as well? (prime95)
@alexhamster1134 lol.. overloaded 520W PSU ? with the specs listed in the description? bullshit :)
i'm running a Q6600 2.4 @ 3.6, 8GB DDR-3, GTX260, a bunch of harddrives and then some on a 430W Seasonic PSU. been like that for YEARS. with ZERO problems :)
@Knaeckebrotsaege q6600 at 3.8? wow, way over the usual 100W consumption, closer to 150. ram+disks negligible. gfx card seems beefy, what are they like at least 200W now? i mean if the CPU and gfx are on seperate 12v rails then should be ok.
@Knaeckebrotsaege cpu pulls 13A at full load. gfx 14A. add a couple of A for the rest of the components and youre running close to the limit of each rail. dont forget the PSU efficiency is around 80% at best, and drops further as its temp increases. reason dual rail psus are cheaper than single rail = you cant load both of them up fully.
Hey mate, I have been tearing my hair out over this! Horizontal wavy lines of distortion running up and down my screen, and a psu squeal. I figured these 2 issues were related and I'd need a new psu. Lo and behold, forcing global vsync eliminated the problem. (I could kiss you!)
i have a question about a power supply, i wanted to buy a 700w rosewill psu and there is a 12v at 28 amp, im trying to run a ati hd 5830 saying that i need atleast 500w 12v and 35-40 amp. will the 700w rosewill psu run it
@therealsteve2437 Corsair are some of the best. Great quality, great parts, great functionality. I bought a Corsair TX 650 V2 yesterday and it was so easy to configure and runs a NZXT Phantom System with a 6950 at full load.
sounds like choke whine. its a shame heavy duty solid chokes arent used regularly on PSUs and graphics cards. doesn't necesarily mean there is something wrong with the unit, but if the whine is coming from a capacitor, then its probs worth sending the unit back and getting a replacement.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you all are idiots. firast of all the problem is a setting in your bios, ive had customers come to me with this problem. Check to see if your motherboard has an "advanced CPU setting called C1E or C1E HALT and disable it. Problem solved, if not then get a new unit.
@umbrefawx This problem has nothing to do with a BIOS setting. I tried all the supposed BIOS "fixes" when I made this video. How can disabling a CPU power saving feature fix a problem that has nothing to do with the CPU? Try not to post like an idiot if you are going to call the rest of us idiots.
@corb01772 It's true, i had the same problem but you notice its not always whining. I personaly turned of any power saving features like EPU and it stoped whining. i cannt believ its so silence now!
@corb01772 i have corsair psu 650W and i had the same problem, and after ssd drive installed such noisy power supply was pretty annoying... and i tried to disable C1E in BIOS and it helped for me... MB Gigabyte EX58 UD3R .. noise dissapeared completely.. but you're right, quite hard to find information about this..
wow you sure are stupid. do you have any idea how a computer even works? if you think power states can in no way be related to your problem then you should probably just buy a Mac or a Dell.
dude, maybe it works with yours, but it doesnt always fix it. I have the same issue, except it bleeds through my aux line and its incredibly irritating. Disableing c1e does shit, bios update does shit, disableing auto vCore does shit, forcing global vsync does.. well, you catch my angle.
Before you go around insulting people, perhaps you should ask yourself if our issue is the same as yours, k? ;)
@corb01772 Because where do you think the power from the cpu comes from thats like saying How could the GPU make that really fucking annoying buzzing noise on the speakers well its not a sound card.
@Saekerhett. Well good to know ti helped for you. C1E and other power saving settings sometimes cause the PSU to whine like that. Think it has something to do with the way it draws power off the PSU with the settings to save power consumption, though I may be wrong
@minigun20 This noise is completely luck of the draw. :( Maybe newer Corsair PSUs are better? I do not know. They have had some product refreshes since this video was made.
@Clickyduck Yup, forcing global vsync helps because it caps the FPS to your monitor refresh rate and the noise mostly occurs at very high FPS. It doesn't fix the problem, it just masks it.
I had an OCZ 850Watt power supply and as soon as i changed my graphics card from a 1gb ATI 5870 to the new ATI 6970 and played crysis or any high graphical game it starts to whine.
so my guess is the new graphics card is trying to suck more than the PSU wants to give and is under stress. so gonna send it back and buy a Coolmaster 1000watt see how that goes :P
ive been told its always best to buy a power supply unit that is 25% more than u need for when your pc is on full load
bah i have this same problem, but it didnt always make this noise. after about a month it started and now it's a bit worse. Kind of like the sound you'd hear from lightning arcing instead of a whine, like that frankenstein electricity crackle, but not that loud. it's audible tho, and this is the replacement of the psu that had the same issue...corsair..i hope this doesnt blow
I solved this problem by replacing my modular PSU with a non-modular Corsair TX650 650W. It has absolutely no whine whatsoever. Even at 2000 fps in ATITool. It seems like all modular PSU:s has this flaw. But all non-modular PSU:s lack it. So if you are noise conscious and want to avoid the whine I recommend a non-modular PSU.
@Cackfiend okay, i guess it can happen to both. thanks for telling me. i got the impression that the modular ones were more vulnerable to this problem.
it's not just corsair. Im running a thermaltake tr750m unit with a gtx 460. I have a feeling it may be related to a parts supplier, as corsair may share suppliers with other companies. It is very annoying, especially when I have a system for show, not just use.
hi, im thinking of getting a seasonic x-650w gold, because people on the internet have said it fixed there coil whine on there graphics cards, personally have a asus 5770 that keeps whining under load, not my psu. theres also a silverstone 750w strider which claims to stop coil whine because it has these special caps in the PCI-E cables, do you think i should get it? im kind of thinking i should get the seasonic as it has a 5 year warranty, whereas the silverstone only has a 2-year warranty :/
Hmm... I own and have owned several Corsair PSUs and I have to say I've never come across this. (My HX620 is 3 years old, and working in pristine condition still). I do however remember an OCZ StealthXStream I used for a bit, it had a weird fluttering sound that appeared when it was under load. I gave the OCZ away after a bit though, so I never got to try it with a lot of different hardware.
I concluded that there may have been, at some point during it's use, too much voltage running thru the transformer causing it to overheat. This would explain why sometimes i could hear the fan randomly ramp up to full speed even during idle. Probably a defect in the units circuitry somewhere. I decided to purchase the Corsair HX650 model. So far so good, just like you describe in your 4th update.
I own a Corsair TX750 that over time got worse with this issue. Simple tasks like scrolling a web page would fluctuate the pitch of the squeal and disabling features in BIOS did little to help. Instead of RMA'ing the unit i bit the bullet & opened it up to find out what was wrong. I discovered that the transformer's epoxy resin had melted & swelled open causing the windings in the core to loosen & vibrate against one another. I also found a burn mark on the fan that made contact with it.
@onesound69 Same here, with a Corsair HX 520W scrolling web page fluctuates the pith of the squeal. Running ATI Tool makes the whine as well like the video. What power supply should I get?
@kooklook you should first consider RMAing the unit if it's still under warranty. you will likely wait up to 2 weeks or more for a replacement which could be a problem if you use your pc daily. i've replaced mine with the corsair hx 650 and it's been silent since, but that's no guarantee that it will be silent for you too. judging by many ppls experiences with many psu's, it's hit or miss. if you do buy, then buy locally so u can return it for a full refund, hassle free. good luck.
I should also add that i have used many psu`s over the years including antec, thermaltake, seasonic and corsair and imo corsair psu`s are THE best psu you can buy for the money.
Read a little more on the tests and see that my current psu a corsair HX850 watt modular was tested and gave over 1000watts output without dying or having any major voltage fluctuations. The facts are that many other psu`s wont even put out their rated power.
It is not a quality issue. It IS the psu getting close to its capacity.I had the same thing happen after i stuck a waterblock on my 8800gts way back.I overclocked the gpu massively as temps would not rise above 32c on full load, however i would get the same whiney noise when running the benchmark with these overclocks so i backed them down a little and everything went quiet again.
Think about it logically.High overclock plus running a bench= noise.Lower overclock or no bench and it was quiet.
I have exactly the same problem with my coolermaster 700w psu & HD5850, but i only get the squeal in ati tool. I've played crysis on highest settings without hearing any squeal.
I havent found a solid answer, but...are corsair psu's (650+watt) compatible with HP Pavilions Elite (E series)? I keep reading otherwise and I want to believe it works because i want to upgrade a high end graphics card :[
is it really because of the PSU?? I nearly replaced my video card for this annoying squeak. i have a gts250(ac twin turbo) and a 620W corsair PSU. plz help...
Ok nice clip , Squeel sound like fan so first of stop it and if it dont go away its very bad cap's in psu they might not cause problems with performance but they can also explode and cause real damage/fire , and also one day they might just go and psu gone , reason for the vsync is simple vsync= lower max frame rate thus less load on gpu even when using ati tool ps im using a 9800gt on a £19.99 psu from ebay .....no problems no noise and screw buying brand name psu's over priced crap
you should know that Corsair doesn't make power supplies, they actually asked other manufacturers such as Enermax, Seasonic, etc...to make power supplies with their names on them. I myself own a TX650W and so far i didn't noticed any lond whining coming from it, and i do own a eVGA Geforce GTS 250. the TX650W is made by Seasonic, while the TX750W is made by another company which i don't really know...but i wouldn't trust this one
My friend and i have a same PSU cft 650 14cs!On my PC squeql, when i take his PSU the same prob squeal! It is not PSU because his PSU works fine in his PC,but when we put it in my PC squeal?!?!?Is this PSU enough for this PC:q6600,2gb ddr3,gtx 260,2xHDD,dvdrw and 2x 12 fans?
weird how you went through so much hardware changes and the noise still remained, two different corsairs, new graphics card, new motherboard and the noise was still there? it's as if your pc is cursed.
I have the exact problem for buying a low quality power supply which was 650w for £35 which is a brand called PowerCool and now have bought a new one which is £70 650w SIRTEC so hope this will come soon and work correctly.
I had the same, I think it was Corsair as well. I complained and they gave me a new one, without any squeal. Apparently this can be done on warranty which is good cause its damned annoying.
It's easy to fix, just put hot glue everywhere you think that might shake and put some "nail glos"" (dunno who to sait that on the cap and onther choke to isolate them.
Better to send back the squealing component, this time the PSU. Let the store and manufacturer know this kind of cheap quality is not acceplable. But I guess they never tested their PSU with one of these power hungry graphics cards.
I have this exact PSU and always thought it was my GPU making the noise. It doesn't bother me as I can't hear it over the sound of games and it doesn't do that when I watch movies so I don't mind it. Weird problem.
Maybe corsair are getting sloppy with their production D: would suck if they are going cheap because im upgrading my Coolermaster 550watt to a Corsair HX650 Modular. Hope this doesnt happen to me
I have a 450vx from newegg. Second one, rma'ed the first for making noise. Both of these damn things make noise under load. Its going back as well. I wont buy a Corsair again after seeing these issues.
thats strange.... When running 3d applications, my nVidia GTX-275 has a high pitched squeal, but it only happens when the card is running at >1000 FPS (usually menus and older games are the only times the card can achieve that high FPS, but setting VSYNC on fixes the problem obviously)
but in my system, it's the video card itself, not the power supply.
I have the same problem with my 285 GTX. I have two Mist 650w PSUs, one rev 3.3 and the other rev 4.0. With rev 3.3 my 285 is very quiet, but with the 4.0 it is unbearable noisy. The only difference i know of between 3.3 and 4.0 is the 4.0 have one 50A 12v rail, while the 3.3 have four 20A 12v rails.
I bought a new computer with a Corsair TX650W PSU, totally unaware of these types of issues. Oh boy, have I learned my lesson the hard way. Squealing opera every time I play certain games or give 3D Mark Vantage a go. Hate it and I'm going to get another brand.
I had this very annoying problem too with my new i7 build. I was running a Zalman ZM600-HP 600w supply, which would whine and squeal with this board as soon as the machine was powered up! I replaced it with a Corsair HX1000w and it's now perfect. I'm sorry your Corsair was problematic; I guess the insides vary drastically from model to model. Thanks for the video.
Thats a real shame bud. My PSU makes that noise on ATI tool but its very very very quiet. The only way to notice it is if you stil your head to the site of the tower. But in general all PSUs will make this noise but 90% of them like mine are very very quiet when they do so. Mine is a Thermal Take Evi Blue series 750watt. Might be one to try for your self.
This might also be a problem of "dirty" power, fixed with ups. Or using wrong cables, like pci-e cables from power supply, change to molex cable might help. Well these are for gpu squealing, but might also help with psu squealing.
I changed my PSU and now it only squeals in Ati Tool but not in games or other 3d app. I have an UPS and Corsair PSU was making noise with it or without it. I tried changing the cables and no effect. I'm glad that the new PSU doesn't squeal in games:P. Bad luck with Corsair, next time I'll think twice. Thanks anyway for your reply:), it is appreciated.
Its very unfortunate that psu squeal can only be fixed by changing it. But im gonna rma my gpu cause it squeals, not psu. Or i might void my warranty and cover the coils and capacitors with hot glue. Or if that doesnt work, i need to change coils and capacitors :o. But i think ill go rma before i twinkle with my gpu.
Thanks for your reply corbo01772, I guess I "won" the lottery:(, If a good brand PSU does this it is a shame. I think next I will go with a normal PSU and save some money. Now is more about quantity then quality.:(
Read my updates in the video info. I haven't solved the problem completely, but replacing the PSU has helped. The solution is to get lucky and get a PSU without defective/shoddy hardware.
It's not really corsair's fault. It is CWT's (the main OEM for corsair,) it is typically coil whine. It causes no damage, except maybe to your ears. If you can stand it or use headphones REALLY LOUDLY, then don't worry about it. If it annoys you, rma it for something else.
you are pushing the PSU to within 100w of its max rating
your PSU is working exactly how it was intended
capacitor squeal is not harmful, just annoying
perhaps Corsair used a batch of cheap capacitors in a batch of their 520W supplies. and if you have been RMA'ing them to the same company you just went through their whole stock, lol
I Rma'd my Psu.. And Corsair accepted that it was faulty. They sent me a replacement which was crystal.. Works like it should do. No annoying sine noise any more..
whats up with that? i dont have that problem with my gtx and antec psu. sounds like capacitor or coil is vibrating, didnt get hot glued or shrinked to help with vibrations
I just got an idea of why I get it in the UT2003 menus too. Perhaps it doesn't only occur when the GPU load is 100% but can also occur when the frame rate is unlimited and very high? It's louder in ATITool than in Furmark where the average frame rate in ATITool is 1,100 fps and in Furmark is 120 fps. And the exact same noise is there in the UT2003 menus altough the GPU load there is exactly 30% both in the window and fullscreen mode.
Yes I believe you are right. There seem to be 2 triggers for the noise: high FPS, and high GPU load.
So using v-sync and limiting FPS to 60 is only a partial solution, since newer games that stress the GPU even at lower FPS will still produce the noise.
That could be right. I haven't been able to produce the noise at low frame rates though because my CPU is always a bottleneck in those cases so the GPU load never comes close to 100% when the frame rate is low. Do you have any ideas of what program I can use to get low framerates with maximum GPU load where the CPU is not a bottleneck?
I found a way to get low fps with max GPU load. In Crysis with highest settings. Even at an fps as low as 20 fps I get this noise. It's also there at 30 fps which is the usual fps. But at this low fps it's not as high pitch as in ATITool, it's more like the noise in Furmark.
Have you tried FurMark? It is a very GPU-intensive benchmark. You can crank the resolution and AA levels up to achieve a low frame rate. On both my Corsair power supplies, FurMark caused the noise to occur.
It's funny I had a HX520 and it have severe coil whine whenever the PSU was NOT under load. Under load it was dead quiet. I RMA'ed it and got a Cooler Master Silent Pro M600 instead.
Also, as you mentioned it only occurs rarely in games. It's mostly in benchmarking tools like ATITool, Furmark and 3DMark. Sometimes in 3DMark it's not there either. I thought it only occured when the GPU load was 100% but now I noticed that I have the same noise in the UT2003 menus where the GPU load is only 30%. I would like to know what the problem is. Also, unlike you, I have a ATI card and a ASUS motherboard. So it definitely seems like the PSU could be the only culprit in this.
I have the same whine on my Fractal Design Newton R2 650W which is also modular like the Corsair HX. I was going to try a Corsair instead but now that I see that it had this problem too I'm thinking that I should try the Enermax MODU82+ 625W instead or another one on the Silent PC Review recommended list.
My power supply squeals too. Even after I completely removed it from the computer it still squeals. I'm guessing it was caused by the video card but I'm still not sure.
It's caused by a faulty capacitor in the PSU. It doesn't effect the performance at all, but most quality companies will accept RMA's due to squealing.
It's now going to be at my expense to Rma this Psu to receive back what may just well be another faulty Psu. Oh great another replacement.. A complete waste of my time!.. I think somebody should start a petiton to let others know of this outrage..
of commitment to help their customers by being honest about their equipment and withdraw faulty models.. Do these psu's not endure a marathon of tests before they reach us? Alot of people have looked at Corsair as being a Branded model with a good reputation, however all I see these days is a failing customer Rappor..
As most people buy these higher branded components for that higher experience of gaming. Why should we have to limit our gameplay due to a fault of one of our devices due to no fault of our own. We shouldn't! I've heard many people say that theyve replaced their Psu for a similar one but to have the same problem. So following that they try changing their graphics card, ram, and even mobo! To find out it still exists. This is a problem with the psu and the manufacturers lack..
After searching around on the Corsair forums (which I recommend most of you visit and complain there if experiencing similar issues) I found that by 'TURNING ON VSYNC' within the nvidia control panel eliminated the Squeel to the point where it was tolerable or non existent. So if any of you are experiencing that Squeel from the Psu give it a shot and let others know if it worked. But to turn on Vsync shouldnt be the answer for such an expensive branded psu.
Turning Vsync on isn't a complete solution. Yes it helps, but for me at least the noise was still very noticeable when playing games that stress the graphics card (Mass Effect comes to mind).
As the Sine sound penetrates the headphones im using. Its at such a high pitch that it gives me a headache after tolerating it for a hour.. I feel tempted and compelled to turn the pc off and play my ps3 instead. Also what i've noticed is that the Corsair 650w lets out a very annoying whirling type squeel once the graphics card is in use.. I couldnt work it out, but to know that the Psu was ommiting a great degree of heat gave me the idea it must have something to do with it.
Corsair sucks! I've read nothing but people having problems with their 620's and 650's with series 8 and higher Gforce cards.. I was using a lower brand 600w psu before I upgraded and it was silent! After upgrading to the 650, which was tempting because of the higher amperage on a single 12v rail, ive had psu make a very high pitch sine sound every time i move the usb mouse, this is only once windows 7 loads, and its not a driver issue as it happens in safe mode. Its damn right annoying.
Oh man, you didn't have to replace a graphics card, nor Mobo, it's the PSU which is giving you that noise. Many things can cause that, so firstly try setting that fan in PSU to run at max RPM. Maybe the PSU has some capacitors to reduce RPM to make fan run at lower speeds (so called "silent mode"), and by setting it to run at max, the power isn't "blocked" and squealing will be gone (that's my theory).
I also have squeling with my new graphic card. My combination is a HD4850 and a Silverstone STF300 Nightjar PSU. The powersupply squeals now. It didnt squeal with the motherboard integrated graphic card.
okay i'm using a different psu but is everybody else here with this problem using an EVGA card?

Have you by now found any solution?
cxgamer 2 months ago
@cxgamer @VideosVonDennis do not let it continue squeeling if like the squeel in this video. it will most likely result in your psu catching fire. Happened to mine. I have absolutely no solution to this problem. I am only my 5th 950watt corsair psu now, at first it is fine; then this happens.
larry365 2 months ago
@larry365 I sometimes get a 0x00000101 BSoD. Do you think the problem may have something to do with squealing? I'll first see fps lag and hear audio noise (got it on vid), followed by a crash if I do not quit the game. In some games, or just windows, it doesn't happen.
cxgamer 2 months ago
Ok the squeal sound in your video is terrible but your overall sound volume of the PSU under load seems to be ok... my PSU is 20 time loader under load.. no squealing but load like a hair drier. I think I must RMA my PSU. :(
VideosVonDennis 3 months ago
Is it possibly the fan squealing as it is sped up to cope with higher operating temperatures when the GPU is running in high-performance mode?
liamsp544 3 months ago
My Gainward "Phantom" GTX 580 3GB was silence until I removed the stock cooler and added a waterblock. Now when I play games, I can hear the infuriating squeal noise coming from GPU or PSU (can't quite tell at this stage).
It's a pain in the arse, to say the least.

Benfro89 4 months ago
@Benfro89 Are you overclocked? - try stock clocks on everything on a fresh install. Pause your blue screen to see the error. Could also be a memory issue (or a bajillion other things... but let's start there).

That sounds like a capacitor is about ready to fail, next sound may be a loud pop or suffering from coil whine?

I had the same problem. I opened up my PSU and THERE WAS A FREAKING HORNETS NEST IN THERE! I GOT STUNG 20 TIMES. MY FACE SWELLED UP TO THE SIZE OF A PUMPKIN! IF YOUR PSU MAKES A NOISE LIKE THAT, SET IT ON FIRE AND THEN DROP IT IN A LAKE.
aseglkj 6 months ago
My power supply also squeals/whines, but only when i'm in an in-game menu. Never while running 3d/ when it's under load. BTW i have a Cooler Master 850m :/
dolph123454321 8 months ago
12V power rail supplying the vid card is overloaded. time to get a higher specced PSU? same noise happens if you fully load the CPU as well? (prime95)
alexhamster1134 8 months ago
@alexhamster1134 lol.. overloaded 520W PSU ? with the specs listed in the description? bullshit :)
i'm running a Q6600 2.4 @ 3.6, 8GB DDR-3, GTX260, a bunch of harddrives and then some on a 430W Seasonic PSU. been like that for YEARS. with ZERO problems :)
max. combined 30A on 12V, which equals 360W.
PSU is an "old" Seasonic S12 II 430W (SS-430GB)
Knaeckebrotsaege 8 months ago 2
@Knaeckebrotsaege q6600 at 3.8? wow, way over the usual 100W consumption, closer to 150. ram+disks negligible. gfx card seems beefy, what are they like at least 200W now? i mean if the CPU and gfx are on seperate 12v rails then should be ok.
alexhamster1134 6 months ago
@alexhamster1134 3.6 .. not 3.8
the GTX260 is listed at 171Watt max.
Gonna replace it with a HD6850 soon though. The GTX260 is simply too loud, too hot, too powerhungry .. in other words: it's a nvidia :)
CPU and gfx card are on seperate rails. the "rest" is split up somewhat evenly across the two.
The S12-II 430 has 2x17A 12V rails (360W combined)
it's somewhat close in total, but with the HD6850, i'm actually getting more gfx performance while stressing the PSU less (127W vs. 171W) lol
Knaeckebrotsaege 6 months ago
@Knaeckebrotsaege cpu pulls 13A at full load. gfx 14A. add a couple of A for the rest of the components and youre running close to the limit of each rail. dont forget the PSU efficiency is around 80% at best, and drops further as its temp increases. reason dual rail psus are cheaper than single rail = you cant load both of them up fully.
alexhamster1134 6 months ago
Hey mate, I have been tearing my hair out over this! Horizontal wavy lines of distortion running up and down my screen, and a psu squeal. I figured these 2 issues were related and I'd need a new psu. Lo and behold, forcing global vsync eliminated the problem. (I could kiss you!)
Would you still recommend getting a new psu?
Cheers =)

@therealsteve2437 Corsair are some of the best. Great quality, great parts, great functionality. I bought a Corsair TX 650 V2 yesterday and it was so easy to configure and runs a NZXT Phantom System with a 6950 at full load.

sounds like choke whine. its a shame heavy duty solid chokes arent used regularly on PSUs and graphics cards. doesn't necesarily mean there is something wrong with the unit, but if the whine is coming from a capacitor, then its probs worth sending the unit back and getting a replacement.

you all are idiots. firast of all the problem is a setting in your bios, ive had customers come to me with this problem. Check to see if your motherboard has an "advanced CPU setting called C1E or C1E HALT and disable it. Problem solved, if not then get a new unit.
umbrefawx 1 year ago
@umbrefawx This problem has nothing to do with a BIOS setting. I tried all the supposed BIOS "fixes" when I made this video. How can disabling a CPU power saving feature fix a problem that has nothing to do with the CPU? Try not to post like an idiot if you are going to call the rest of us idiots.

Saekerhett 8 months ago
@Saekerhett. Well good to know ti helped for you. C1E and other power saving settings sometimes cause the PSU to whine like that. Think it has something to do with the way it draws power off the PSU with the settings to save power consumption, though I may be wrong
umbrefawx 8 months ago
would the HX850W do that or is it luck of the draw cuz im debating on buying that honey or not to

@Clickyduck Yup, forcing global vsync helps because it caps the FPS to your monitor refresh rate and the noise mostly occurs at very high FPS. It doesn't fix the problem, it just masks it.

bah i have this same problem, but it didnt always make this noise. after about a month it started and now it's a bit worse. Kind of like the sound you'd hear from lightning arcing instead of a whine, like that frankenstein electricity crackle, but not that loud. it's audible tho, and this is the replacement of the psu that had the same issue...corsair..i hope this doesnt blow
Dogsofwar909 1 year ago
I solved this problem by replacing my modular PSU with a non-modular Corsair TX650 650W. It has absolutely no whine whatsoever. Even at 2000 fps in ATITool. It seems like all modular PSU:s has this flaw. But all non-modular PSU:s lack it. So if you are noise conscious and want to avoid the whine I recommend a non-modular PSU.

it's not just corsair.

TheMoo1231 1 year ago
Hmm... I own and have owned several Corsair PSUs and I have to say I've never come across this. (My HX620 is 3 years old, and working in pristine condition still). I do however remember an OCZ StealthXStream I used for a bit, it had a weird fluttering sound that appeared when it was under load. I gave the OCZ away after a bit though, so I never got to try it with a lot of different hardware.
ballebanan 1 year ago

blakei21 1 year ago
i think you should have plenty of amps for the card,
i have xfxhd4870 and my corsaur 550 psu has plenty of power, never heard a peep from it.
Not sure what the problem is but you wrote after changing to a new psu "the noise is almost completely gone! " maybe its not the psu ?
ikill4money2 1 year ago
I concluded that there may have been, at some point during it's use, too much voltage running thru the transformer causing it to overheat. This would explain why sometimes i could hear the fan randomly ramp up to full speed even during idle. Probably a defect in the units circuitry somewhere. I decided to purchase the Corsair HX650 model. So far so good, just like you describe in your 4th update.
onesound69 1 year ago
I own a Corsair TX750 that over time got worse with this issue. Simple tasks like scrolling a web page would fluctuate the pitch of the squeal and disabling features in BIOS did little to help. Instead of RMA'ing the unit i bit the bullet & opened it up to find out what was wrong. I discovered that the transformer's epoxy resin had melted & swelled open causing the windings in the core to loosen & vibrate against one another. I also found a burn mark on the fan that made contact with it.
onesound69 1 year ago
@onesound69 Same here, with a Corsair HX 520W scrolling web page fluctuates the pith of the squeal. Running ATI Tool makes the whine as well like the video. What power supply should I get?
kooklook 1 year ago

RhODomhnaill 1 year ago
@RhODomhnaill Like someone stated above as well, maybe it's my power supply getting close to its limit ...
kooklook 1 year ago
It is not a quality issue. It IS the psu getting close to its capacity.I had the same thing happen after i stuck a waterblock on my 8800gts way back.I overclocked the gpu massively as temps would not rise above 32c on full load, however i would get the same whiney noise when running the benchmark with these overclocks so i backed them down a little and everything went quiet again.
Think about it logically.High overclock plus running a bench= noise.Lower overclock or no bench and it was quiet.

Better to send back the squealing component, this time the PSU. Let the store and manufacturer know this kind of cheap quality is not acceplable. But I guess they never tested their PSU with one of these power hungry graphics cards.

Lol man, my problem is the exact opposite.
My corsair 450vx buzzes (like a bee, not high pitched squeal) all the time but when I use ATI tool the buzz stops and it's dead silent. Wtf?
I plan on buying a 550vx as my mom needs a new PSU and it seems to not make any noise in her system. Hopefully 550vx won't give me problems.
DarkZedEx 2 years ago
I have a 450vx from newegg. Second one, rma'ed the first for making noise. Both of these damn things make noise under load. Its going back as well. I wont buy a Corsair again after seeing these issues.
ladefreakndah 2 years ago
my coolmax CU700-B does that to and it so loud. it only started to do it when I installed my GTX275 I guess thats what I get for buying a cheap PSU.
I'm going to get the Cooler Master silent pro M 600 watt.
workensmart 2 years ago
thats strange....

Degen223 2 years ago
This might also be a problem of "dirty" power, fixed with ups. Or using wrong cables, like pci-e cables from power supply, change to molex cable might help. Well these are for gpu squealing, but might also help with psu squealing.
CheatEnginer 2 years ago
I changed my PSU and now it only squeals in Ati Tool but not in games or other 3d app. I have an UPS and Corsair PSU was making noise with it or without it. I tried changing the cables and no effect. I'm glad that the new PSU doesn't squeal in games:P. Bad luck with Corsair, next time I'll think twice. Thanks anyway for your reply:), it is appreciated.
Avangere84 2 years ago
Its very unfortunate that psu squeal can only be fixed by changing it. But im gonna rma my gpu cause it squeals, not psu. Or i might void my warranty and cover the coils and capacitors with hot glue. Or if that doesnt work, i need to change coils and capacitors :o. But i think ill go rma before i twinkle with my gpu.

CheatEnginer 2 years ago
AFAIK the noise is not harmful, just incredibly annoying.
corb01772 2 years ago
It's not really corsair's fault. It is CWT's (the main OEM for corsair,) it is typically coil whine. It causes no damage, except maybe to your ears. If you can stand it or use headphones REALLY LOUDLY, then don't worry about it. If it annoys you, rma it for something else.
Squirrelsteam 2 years ago

MouthofSaurons 2 years ago
No way man. 520W and triple 20A rails is way more power than my setup needed. This isn't a power issue, it's a quality-of-manufacturing issue.
corb01772 2 years ago
Way more power? that's BS, bro
you are pushing the PSU to within 100w of its max rating
your PSU is working exactly how it was intended
capacitor squeal is not harmful, just annoying
perhaps Corsair used a batch of cheap capacitors in a batch of their 520W supplies. and if you have been RMA'ing them to the same company you just went through their whole stock, lol

The mobo I had in the video was the GA-EX38-DQ6. A fantastic board but I had to replace it when a capacitor fell off of it.
corb01772 2 years ago
I just got an idea of why I get it in the UT2003 menus too. Perhaps it doesn't only occur when the GPU load is 100% but can also occur when the frame rate is unlimited and very high? It's louder in ATITool than in Furmark where the average frame rate in ATITool is 1,100 fps and in Furmark is 120 fps. And the exact same noise is there in the UT2003 menus altough the GPU load there is exactly 30% both in the window and fullscreen mode.
Jspeterson 2 years ago
Yes I believe you are right. There seem to be 2 triggers for the noise: high FPS, and high GPU load.
So using v-sync and limiting FPS to 60 is only a partial solution, since newer games that stress the GPU even at lower FPS will still produce the noise.
corb01772 2 years ago
That could be right. I haven't been able to produce the noise at low frame rates though because my CPU is always a bottleneck in those cases so the GPU load never comes close to 100% when the frame rate is low. Do you have any ideas of what program I can use to get low framerates with maximum GPU load where the CPU is not a bottleneck?
Jspeterson 2 years ago
I found a way to get low fps with max GPU load. In Crysis with highest settings. Even at an fps as low as 20 fps I get this noise. It's also there at 30 fps which is the usual fps. But at this low fps it's not as high pitch as in ATITool, it's more like the noise in Furmark.

The annoying thing is that even with vsync on so that the GPU load is around 90% I have that noise (in Crysis).
Jspeterson 2 years ago

I have the same problem with Cooler Master Real Power M700... :(

it probably actually the video card.
took mine in to get serviced and they replaced the PSU and tried a leadtek 260, with the same noise.
So id say its the video card

My power supply fan(on the back of the power supply) is not working. Is it the reason my computer is so loud?
tairyhesticals 2 years ago
My power supply squeals too. Even after I completely removed it from the computer it still squeals. I'm guessing it was caused by the video card but I'm still not sure.
RobGatzke 2 years ago
It's caused by a faulty capacitor in the PSU. It doesn't effect the performance at all, but most quality companies will accept RMA's due to squealing.

got the same problem.
gigbyte 260GTX + Corsair 650W ATX.
its ridiculous that as consumers we have to just deal with these problems\
would be good if someone finds a fix for it as its just unacceptable

@bl3ach23 can you not just rma it back to corsair

It's now going to be at my expense to Rma this Psu to receive back what may just well be another faulty Psu. Oh great another replacement.. A complete waste of my time!.. I think somebody should start a petiton to let others know of this outrage..
djfluidz 2 years ago
of commitment to help their customers by being honest about their equipment and withdraw faulty models.. Do these psu's not endure a marathon of tests before they reach us? Alot of people have looked at Corsair as being a Branded model with a good reputation, however all I see these days is a failing customer Rappor..
djfluidz 2 years ago

But to turn on Vsync shouldnt be the answer for such an expensive branded psu.
djfluidz 2 years ago

@djfluidz Same here, what power supply should I go for? I got the HX 520W
kooklook 1 year ago
Oh man, you didn't have to replace a graphics card, nor Mobo, it's the PSU which is giving you that noise. Many things can cause that, so firstly try setting that fan in PSU to run at max RPM. Maybe the PSU has some capacitors to reduce RPM to make fan run at lower speeds (so called "silent mode"), and by setting it to run at max, the power isn't "blocked" and squealing will be gone (that's my theory).

i got the tx650w corsair psu with gtx260 216p sli and it's quiet
torentmonkey 2 years ago
hey buddy,
its annoying isnt it?
i got the same issue.
wonder if its the HX series thats causing the problem?
anyone got a non modular psu?
mrjsincerity 2 years ago
I'm wondering the same thing. Can anyone try this on a non-modular Corsair? Perhaps all modular PSUs have the same faulty part.
Jspeterson 2 years ago
I know the ATITool squeal pattern by heart, it's sad. If you hadn't shown you were using that, I would've known any way since I recognize the sound.
I have a Corsair HX620 that has intermittent squealing going on, which is independent of what I use the computer for. It just comes and goes.
tacklemcclean 2 years ago
I also have squeling with my new graphic card. My combination is a HD4850 and a Silverstone STF300 Nightjar PSU. The powersupply squeals now. It didnt squeal with the motherboard integrated graphic card.
