@olsonr while planetary gearsets are used in differentials, they're in a different configuration than this. this configuration would be more akin to a automatic gearbox
@jonjoy1999 A differential is a planetary gear set with equal inner/ outer radii of the planetary gears.. a specialized case, yes. A transmission's core parts generally dont use planetary gears, although the output drive of the transmission sometimes goes through a planetary gear set to amplify the final drive torque in heavier duty equipment
@olsonr most automatic gearboxes use planetary gear sets because they are easily controlled by hydraulic-powered clutches. a manual gearbox uses synchromeshed gears which aren't in a planetary configuration (they usually have input, counter, and output shafts) . the main difference I was pointing out between differentials and this planetary gearset is: differentials have the planetary gears at right-angles to the sun gears, so it *looks* different, even though it isn't
i'm now going to make one of these on my 3 Axis homemade milling machine... but i wont have the bottom handle thing... it's going to be square... thanks for giving me the idea.
I found it!!! It's called Stop! by Ghost K!!!. I typed in the lyrics...oooh it's so good

What exactly is a planetary gear used for functionally?

@Hiddenjello
A big example is in differentials.
