There could be some truth in the "brothel" comment, why not? It's not exactly impossible. History has proven that. Regardless, this is a gutsy lady, she's wild!
Being primarily an opera nut but also appreciative of LOTS of stuff pre-1930, I never have known much about this particular torch singer -- just try to pick up her records from {my} period when they're in decent shape. This is a real 'mind-blower' to me; if nothing else the voice is incredible at this point -- love to hear more!! Thanx for uploading it!!!
Sounds like a blackface version from a hollywood movie. I could never stand the old 'white' versions of these old folk songs. They are always way over dramatized. They might as well get James T. Kirk to sing them. If this were acting it would be considered overly enthusiastic community theatre drama. I'm glad this era of music is not well represented. But we do have to remember this style so that we understand why we should repeat it.
@Randidan You sound like a retard because you like this version. There does a personal attack sound good because I didn't like what you said. Same old response types on the internet. Don't like something cry and insult. You're so full of it, same old behaviour. Not everyone has to like what you like. And I don't like this. I think it sounds contrived. Get over it dipsh*t.
@theshowmecanuck Yea, to each his own. It sorta sounds operaish. (chuckle) Is that a word? A sound, like if I heard it in an empty house I've never been in, I'd think it was haunted and run. She has a haunting voice. Seriously folks, that's what I think. ((((shiver)))). I like it best by the Animals.
...i just always thought it was some rock n roll era song and now this totally haunting and ....much older song.........its a totally different experience listening to it this way.
@nachjagger33 that was uncalled for. Do you know me or my grandma? You got some nerve talking about people like that, and nobody even knows what your face looks like . when you let your balls drop, and do some research, then try and insult me. Right now, you just some little ass kid, making irrelevant comments...

unlike the animals version about a gambler's low, this is a woman's lament about working in a brothel, the house of the rising sun

It's really hard to believe this is the same woman who sang those earlier songs (Am I Blue?, Moanin Low) - She was an amazing woman.

This is only the second singer, the other being Linda Ronstadt, that sang with, I think it's called, a natural vibratto in her voice. Beautiful.
