Since then, rotary engines have been restricted from Le Mans, because FIA was swaying teams towards 3.5 litre f1 engines to become their preferred platform.

The 787B was not banned due to being 'too good'. One win(and a couple podiums) out of 21 races is hardly going to qualify it as 'too good'. Wankels were banned because of the ever tightening FIA rules. The FIA wanted teams to use homogenised(formulaic) F1 engines. There are no Wankels in Formula One, hence the ban based on the grounds that it would be impossible to retool the motor to meet spec. The car has its place in history, just as any LM winner. There are better, and there are worse cars.
