We are NOT a young nation..we are inheritors of various turkic (kokturk, uyghur, altin orda etc) empires, our languages were virtually unchanged for a thousand years (look at orkhon inscriptions- almost all turks can understand 1000 year old language if transcribed to modern alphabets) with the exception of Icelandic-Norwegian- no other people can claim this.
I'm totally agreed with you Socalav. Everybody has their own opinion about the politics and different review about the history. The only truth is the loss of our culture and the language in Turkey, Bulgaria, Lithuania, China...
I'm afraid we are going to disappear till the total assimilation if on the way we still go on by accusing each other and talking about the "purity ", or "physical appearance", or the acceptation or not the people who is trying to find their roots in different countries, or because of the "reality shows", or "who and why made that conversations" instead of now what and how we can do for our culture and language till we're having our national proud.
Reasons: 1. We are a young nation. 2. We haven't enough time to make own long-lasting countries. 3. Russia and Turkey got our lands (the last one Russians got from Turkey). 4. Some of our hosts do not try to assimilate us. For example as I can see in Finland or China the Kazan-tatars are still the same Kazan-tatars as their forefathers. But in some other places - Turkey or Russia (outside Tatarstan) many Tatars already think they are Turkish or Russians.
I have no personal knowledge of the Urums or Bosnians etc..but to think that in Ottoman times there was no comingling at all would seem to be unrealistic.
To me the issues here are the state of the Turkic speaking world and cultures, the loss of our languages, history and pride in our populations in general.

The music of the people who speak similar language of mine lives in different countries. Each country has different influences from the neighbour countries in their geographic areas. Like Bulgarian or Greek music have similar oriental signs, or Uzbek or Kazak similarities from their neighbours. We can not talk about any "purity" in human beings, either biologically or culturally, because it doesn't exist.
The main problem of the Tatar nation as it exists today is that there is NO true knowledge of our collective history among our peoples and hence no REAL sense of PRIDE that we can use to defend against elective assimilation as in Turkey or forced assimilation as in Russia. As a native Tatar speaker with relatives in US, Turkey, Russia and elsewhere, and having visited and lived in all these places, I believe that the survival of our language and culture is at risk because of this.
Look, I do not love Russia. I love China. But I have to say, that Russia at least provide possibility to create a kind of semi-free republic. But where is the republic of Kurdistan in Turkey? 5 000 000 tatars in Turkey - more than Tatars in Tatarstan, but...no republic in Turkey. About knowledge - you're right! Some Bulgarian Tatars believe that Turkish and Tatars got the same root! Just don't know why Tatars are with "long eyes", but Turkish are like Europeans...

You don't know the history of tatars. We are originally from Bulgaria area, then we moved to where is now Russia and Tatarstan Republic, we called our new country Volga Bolgaria, and our names were Bolgarians. Later russians called us "tatars", which is the name of mongolian tribe, which shows how ignorant they were. We have very little mixture with mongols, about 8% as scholars found out. and we didn't mix with russians. although more than 90% russians have tatar blood.

If we talk about percentage of mixing. ALL eastern europeans have a a certain mixture with Mongols. All my family has a big european eyes, my dad has blue& green and my brother was blond when he was born and has green eyes. Plus all my cousins are blonds. How do you explain that? All my relatives have big eyes, all my cousines are blonds and some have gray and blue eyes. And we are all 100% pure Tatars. I have Tatar friends who have red hair and green eyes. We are all mixed and Turkish people are mixed as much as we are. But the difference is with different nationalities.

We are NOT a young nation..we are inheritors of various turkic (kokturk, uyghur, altin orda etc) empires, our languages were virtually unchanged for a thousand years (look at orkhon inscriptions- almost all turks can understand 1000 year old language if transcribed to modern alphabets) with the exception of Icelandic-Norwegian- no other people can claim this.

Reasons: 1. We are a young nation. 2. We haven't enough time to make own long-lasting countries. 3. Russia and Turkey got our lands (the last one Russians got from Turkey). 4. Some of our hosts do not try to assimilate us. For example as I can see in Finland or China the Kazan-tatars are still the same Kazan-tatars as their forefathers. But in some other places - Turkey or Russia (outside Tatarstan) many Tatars already think they are Turkish or Russians.

The music of the people who speak similar language of mine lives in different countries. Each country has different influences from the neighbour countries in their geographic areas. Like Bulgarian or Greek music have similar oriental signs, or Uzbek or Kazak similarities from their neighbours. The main problem of the Tatar nation as it exists today is that there is NO true knowledge of our collective history among our peoples and hence no REAL sense of PRIDE that we can use to defend against elective assimilation as in Turkey or forced assimilation as in Russia. As a native Tatar speaker with relatives in US, Turkey, Russia and elsewhere, and having visited and lived in all these places, I believe that the survival of our language and culture is at risk because of this.
