In the 18th century, shortly after the US was founded, pirates, under the direct control of the Islamic caliphate, attacked United States ships. When we tried to find out why they did this, they said we were infidels. At the time, we were no threat to the Muslims, we didn't even have a navy.

Certainly most problems derive from their inefficient governments; but we cannot deny the interference of US in their domestic affairs throughout the recent history. However, such an interference is fully explained by the huge energetic resources at their disposal.
