  • Very informative, but I'm still pretty confused.

  • this was SO helpful man. thanks

  • Your vids are very informative...but did you pronounce your name (ace-sphincter?) It's the third time you've pronounced it that way in different vids...funny. Great vids, great vids...

  • You lost me when you pulled out the vocoder's (I am pretty new to Reason and music in general) but this video was still helpful. Thank you, great video!

  • Cleared things up for me and I got a decent laugh out of it, education is fun!

  • im confused about one thing. whats the point of compressing a synth line? if you want to even out the dynamics, why wouldnt you just change the note velocities in your sequencer? or if youre using the compressor to accentuate a synth's attack phase, why not just do that with the ADSR envelope of the synth you're using?

  • the librarian metaphor actually makes sense, that was the only explanation i understood on how the compressor works..... great vid

  • thank you man its all sooooooo clear now lol the compressor baffled me for years

  • excellent video, man. :) for the first time i actually understand what a compressor does

  • Awsome. Love the librarian metaphore. If your not already, you'd make a great teacher in sure

  • this video sux ass

  • great explanation of the ration and threshold, thank you

  • "at 16 you need a calculator", bwahaha.

this is the best video i found on youtube that explains compression with reason. thanks for the help! it's like, all i needed to hear in order to "get it"

  • great man. thx

  • Nice video, but watch your language, please.

  • thanks a lot for posting this awesome video! Cleared my confusion right up!

  • I love you.

  • good job man

  • Great tutorial....clearly explained!

  • Compression is for instruments only or also for vocals?

I was always curious how certain songs...I know the singer is screaming into the mic...but the final output always sounds constant.....

    So this is compression?

  • do you need to compress each sound?

  • when recording vocals, should i use a compressor before or after?

  • Always, ALWAYS do your effects After recording.

Record clean, then dirty it up.

The reason? You can't UNDO if you record it dirty.

  • good teaching men.would u say eq and compressor is needed on all vocal recording and beats

  • yea

  • dude..that was an awesome tutorial...put out more basic tutorials like this! there are so many knobs in reason and most of the tutorials don't actually go into detail explaining each one, which you did...and that's appreciated

    denn ohne dich

    kann ich nicht bin

  • You have a great style of presenting and simplifying - the librarian concept was really helpful. I tend to self deprecate as well because I think it can be helpful in making it sound like I'm not a "know it all" you did a great job of that. Thanks for helping me learn!

  • I really enjoyed your tutorial on compression.

    Thanks

    You came across very well

  • hey acepinter, great vid man...alot of help...thanx

  • hey

    I already made a song

but I want to mix it down on reason

    how do I do that

  • Really helpful, thanks

  • great tutorial,i am now starting to get my head around compression :-)

  • Hey, thanks. Could you consider the ratio control as a kind of volume on the compressor?

  • In a sense, I guess so... the higher the ratio, the more aggresively sounds are reduced once they pass the threshold... Hmmmm :\

  • Very good job, this tutorial is great!

Especially I liked the division of frequencies in the end, I never thought of that.

But I've got one question: talking about ratio -and if I understood it wrong please correct me- should the db's go above the threshold, the compressor divides the extra db's with X (X:1)... is this how you meant it?

The way I heard before, the compressor measures all the db's gone at least X(units) above the threshold, erases them and adds 1 db.

    Complicated enough?

  • Nope - the division is the proper way to understand compression.

Some compressors have a make-up gain function which would add db to the end result, but it is a Division process.

However, if you set the compressor to (infinity):1, you would effectively be "erasing" all the gain above X db. They call this "Brickwalling"

  • cool man i add u to my favorite i saw one article talking about how we can use compressor to more than check level and this is what u did with combine compressor and EQ good job

  • a compressor isn't to 'polish' your sound

it's to get more space in your mix.

  • lol, listen up chump. Whoever told you that is lying!

Compressor controls volume, so it stands to reason (excuse the pun) that it's a method of keeping that element (volume) more consistent and even. Helps with mixdown and mastering, so in that sense, it is polising your sound (or your mixdown). Controlling space in your mix is more about EQ, pan AND volume (and I'd argue reverb) What you're describing sounds more like a 'limiter'... remember, decent compressors tend to expand signals too...

  • dude :) that is really impressive! :)

1.. you try to prove you know more ;) *claps hands* well done little chump! :D

no really, WOW that's AWESOME! high five!

I mean like respect, dude! :D

and 2. you seem to be a nitwit know-it-all asshole that doesn't give a shit & likes to insult people.

so I geuss that makes you the CHUMP ;)

  • Er... firstly I don't use 'chump' as much of insult as you seem to think. Don't take it so personally, I didn't mean to offend you, so sorry if I did. Just an arrogant first line.

On the other hand (read your point no.2) your response is actually pretty hypocritical...

I wasn't trying to prove anything, I was hoping you'd see why I dis-agreed with your comment.

I thought I'd be helping you out by correcting your thoughts on the use of compression.

  • alright sorry man I take it back.

I took the word Chump to seriously.

  • you know man, i got all the reason 4 dvd;s but this has two differs that being that this vid is simple and interesting. i loved that example of the librian. u made this so simple man, thank you keep the vids coming, hell make a dvd i will buy it.

  • Another great tutorial, thanks!

  • Holy shit, the librarian was perfect! I already knew compression pretty well but I kept watching because of her.

  • Very comprehensible the way you presented this tut. Do you have on using Reason 3 as a rewire application involving Sonar 6 Producwer edition?? Thanx

  • lmao "this is the distance between your table and the librarian" , great tutorial my friend

  • That was very helpful, thankyou

  • thnx great, luved the librarian thing haha, im guna b playin around with her alot ;)

but got lost with the vocoder bit ....

  • i love the comparision with the library. it explains very good what the compressor is about!

  • HEY SPHINCTER U DA MAN

  • hey ace, thanks for doing these tutorials- you've helped me out alot

  • can u use the vocoder in reason 2.5 for compression, without the combinator?

  • hey good job, although i know most of this stuff, it was enjoyable and humorous (think librarian doing 'the robot' dance) to watch, nice use of the concept built multiband in Reason as well.

  • a good example of using compression to do so on drums. good vid!

  • doesn't a compressor also boost low sounds and reduce the dynamics of the song?

  • only "Make-up Gain" compressors automatically boost the quiet parts. Although, typically you would increase the volume on a mixer channel once compression is applied, because the output level will be graduated according to the comp. ratio. So, in this way you can boost the low sounds while not changing the loud ones too much. In this way, you lose dynamics.

A compressor doesn't reduce the dynamics as an effect, it's more a side-effect of trying to make everything loud.

  • This was very well done. Thank you a lot, I never thought about making a multiband-compressor, but now you showed it, i realise, that it's quite simple.

That's what I like most in Reason, the way you can simulate all kind of different Hardwares.

By the way: The metaphors were really funny. Greets from Germany!

  • lol sounds like you sing 'this is a sphincter'

  • You Sir!....deserve some kind of award!

  • $1,000,000 would be nice. Anything but Zimbabwe currency, please!

  • HjeHje, if I only had the money you would get it in Swedish currency....since I live there =)

  • great video

  • Thank you. You couldn't made this more easier to understand. I wasn't 100% before this, but now I am. Thanks a lot for the great video! :)

  • Brilliant tutorial !! Subscribed to your channel ... Just started using reason ,,,Check out some of my music

  • thaaaaanks

  • "Alright!" :D

  • Yeah Multibandcompression in Reason : see 7.30 min

  • that's good ! thanks a lot man, one question though :

what do you think of those sidechain compression tutorials that we can see on youtube as well. Is that a good way to make a better sound, or it's just an effect using the compressor ability.

  • It's just a good way to balance two loud instruments, like a Kick drum against your main sound. It's primarily to ensure that one instrument (the kick) ALWAYS comes through the mix clearly.

  • very useful tutorial mate....by any chance could u give me some tips on compressing bass to make it fit in the mix right? and not just sound drowned out. that always seems to happen

  • It depends on your particular circumstances. If volume is the problem, compress the bass down and then boost the overall volume of the bass. If you can't hear it clearly enough, try putting ALL your other instruments (except drums) on a highpass filter, so the low freq. remains unoccupied!

  • well in most mixes you dont want the bass to be noticed, it ijust sits there and fills up the lower part of your song... if you do it right you will hear it only when you pay attention to it(listen to proffesional mixed songs)

  • thnx a lot mate '',)

  • Dude!

  • Sweet!

  • Dude!......... Whats mine say???

Good Vid, I got a kick out of this comment, not sure if this where you were going with it, lol

  • Yeah, pretty much.

  • great metaphor!

  • haha XD i think everyone had that reaction to it :)

  • Hahaha! I had the exact same first reaction to it!

  • very helpful!

  • another great tutorial, thanks :)

  • Good job on that, thanks!
