backpacks acannot really be put into general classes. two backpacks of the same weight and volume (or similar) can be used for two totaly different things. My examples are the gregory denali pro 105 and the eberlestock v90 (99liters) battleship: the denali is a mountaineering backpack while the eberlestock is a military/hunting pack.
speaking as someone who uses both internal and external gear you are dead on with the limitations of internal frame packs I'm always astounded at the amount of gear I find pitched by people on the AT( I live close to the start and hike it a lot), who 9 times out of 10 have tried some crazy packing in an internal frame pack that didn't work.
Hey everyone and nutnfancy check out the large internal pack I just reviewed. Think it's a improvement over the pack shown in this video. Like to know what you think
Hey Nutnfancy, I am hoping you can post a reply to this. Enjoying your video let me first say and I will most likely look at many of your other videos. My question: I am looking at a backpack here and there is "sizes" (Small, Medium, Large), but I just so happen to see that Cubic inches were affiliated with the different sizes...Are these sizes refering to the size of the pack? Im only asking because I am not a big guy and it's possible I am mistaking these different sizes as something to fit me
Great backpack reviews, it's always more interesting & useful knowing what actual users think about gear rather than manufacture's specs. info........Internal rucksacks are based on mountain climbing packs, where keeping the weight close to your body for maximum stability is essential, so external pockets & a lot of attachment points defeat the object of these packs as added equipement on the outside may / will pull the bag off your back like external framed packs often do.....thanks again.
hey nutnfancy, iv been looking for a good well built pack, that would last, also, i need it to fit a huge sleeping bag. i have a old ECW military down sleeping bag, -40. and then i have my 2person tent, cloths and what not. any ideas on a pack?
by the way, iv been watching your videos for a while, there great! keep them coming, gear reviews have been great.
Just got an internal 5000 CuIn due to the hype. Have a Super Tioga that I love but am passing down to my oldest son. Needed to learn some about the internals. I am guessing that I need to keep more than one. Thanks for the great info! enjoyed the reviews.
As an Eagle Scout. I agree Frame is sooo much more versatile. I think it's a pain that all you see anymore is this design. I reckon it's a good thought related to certain tasks. But, most of us aren't scaling or bouldering with this type of rig. Besides if you've EVER used a duffel bag all the stuff you need inevitably is on the bottom.
you guys should check out the high sierra long trail 90 liter internal frame backpack. its running for about 100 bucks on ebay with free shipping. Ive just received mine and it is truly top notch quality... especially for the price. so if your on a budget and want an excellent internal frame check this backpack out.
i can go five days in a 3050 cubic inch pack. its possible and comfortable. snowpeak titan pot, msr pocket rocket, marmot 1 person tent, plastic ground cloth, thermarest prolite sleeping pad, 20degree down feather sleeping bag, all the other little things like headlamp, kitchen gear, food, map /compass. fun, easy and comfortable.
Joe Rock here and I just wanted to say your videos really help me. Im a shooter and camper. I always wanted to get into backpacking and thanks to your videos I was able to learn the rope with the gear needed to do so. Thank you very much! Keep up the good work.

Hey NutnFancy I just wanted to thank you for the videos that you make. I am a shooter and camper but always wanted to get into backpacking. Watching your videos really has tought me the ropes for backpacking. Keep up the good work.
I would also like to know the answer to this, i was going to get a 90 litre capacity (5492 Cubic Inches) but i dont know if i should get a 70 litre capacity (4271 Cubic Inches) i will only be getting one backpack so i want a good allround pack.
about the pockets, they are not there on purpose,so you can put big items on the sides(tent, skis),and you can attach additional pockets on the compression straps
nice pack. i definitely prefer the internal frames over the external. they seem to distribute weight more comfortably and are a bit more water resistant than externals
i do admit that your right about the 3000 CI backpacks are ridiculously small. Remember there are more packs then this so you can put your tent on the outside.
i have an outbound about that size nothing special another pocket at the bottom so you can access your clothes and sleeping bags numberous straps i can have 2 tents on it comfortably with a 40 below celcius bag i can pack it with everythign to last me a week...internal frame. i don't know much about gear but i've had it since grade six and i'm 19. completely durable.
i dont no for shore but external frame packs would have a lot more space especilay on the outside because you could strap more stuff onto it. whay you guys think?
I hate having anything tied to the outside of my pack for snagging on stuff, personally. Which is annoying cause I usually take a synthetic sleeping bag and a thermarest sleeping pad, both of which basically add no weight at all, but they are really bulky and take up about 70% of the room in my 65 litre pack.
ok so what you're saying is that at 5500 cubic inch internal frame is a lot lower on the carrying capacity of a 5500 cubic inch external frame. if so is there that much of a difference?
@ Nutnfancy: How do you like the Karrimor sabre packs? What I've read about them so far, I think you would like those. Same for the Berghaus Vulcan or Cyclops.
@ Kward: I think it depens on where and when you will have food supplies, how you will prepare it. How much stuff do you have to / want to take with you. If I go on a few days trip (say midweek) my 65 litre pack does fine. You can always strap stuff to the outside : )
haha there are times where we re supply. i went to/ they said about a 4500 to 5500 cubic inch pack. still not sur campmor e on internal frame or external. externals hold more, but i'm not sure how much hacking i'm gonna have to do so i still don't know what frame type to get. leaning more towards external though for the more weight.
haha i did spend a month backpacking with a 5700 cc backpack with NOLS in NW Australia w/o trails(food drops every 9-10 days), so it is very possible todo but at the same time, it really does take alot of planning and careful packing...NOLS(as far as i know) only use internal frame packs i dont have a video camera or i could post a vid reply but if anyone wants help feel free to hit me up
hey man, for me i always have liked the feel of the internal frames because i like to have my pack fit within my shoulder width because i find it easier to avoid snagging myself on trees, im very experienced and i have alot of gear knowledge large internals i would recommend for ne1 looking for a good large internal go for Marmot(formally dana designs), osprey, arctyrx you will pay for these but they will serve you very very well and r lighter weight.
Yea, i really agree with your video on packs, internal is ok, but external frames are the best way to go. You can tie down and are rugged....i use a kelty tioga 5500. Keep up the good work.

AS much as I respect your opinion and appreciate your videos. Just because you someone doesnt share your views or opinions doesnt mean theres is false. Just different.
Please stop putting down others choices just because you dont agree.
I'm afraid I don't really follow your point. If you're referring to my reference to the elitism for internal frame packs I will say my observation is accurate. That's not a "put down" that's just the outgrowth of why you will have such a hard time finding a large external frame pack. Because many will criticize such a choice as foolish and outdated when in fact it's probably best. No matter though, unless the ratings come up, you'll see no more bp gear vids from me. It's too much work.
Should of realised your followers would have quickly thumbs down me just for stating my views. I love your vids. Just that this one irked me that you were so quick to dismiss other peoples views. If it works for you more power to you. BUt dont say other peoples ideas are wrong just because its not your idea. I know tens of people locally who can hike ultralight (10lbs) and have the time of their life. Others who go in with 40lbs and also love it. Just please take it from both views.
@nutnfancy Sorry to see that. Your vids have been the most informing that I have seen on then net or on tv for that matter and thats no Joke! No one has done it better. Keep up the good work and again sorry to read that you will do no more BP vids. BTW have been trying to find a large BP and I am having a hard time finding a H.V external frame pack and that sucks. So I checked this vid and don't know if I should go this route(I.F.B.P) or go with the JanSport Carson cause it fits my budget?
Thanks to these videos, I ended up with a 70 litter gregory beltaro. Can't wait to take it out and give it a go

internal frames are not meant to have stuff dangling from them. they are meant to stick close to your body to improve balance.
