@flexwheelR actually your pretty close. Its a reflection between both the book/movie "into the wild" and Laika (the first dog shot up into space, by russia). Pretty much making the connection between the two (Alex/Laika) And how alex (leaving up to alaska and abandoning his family for a self forfilling manner) is pretty much like Laika, the first dog shot up to space. I love the song because its smart of the band to relate two totally different things in one song, and make it sound so great!

for me, this is about the possibility futility of rising above an impoverished, ignorant, or limited community...alex is fighting to get out, but everyone tells him he can't. "it's for your own good, it's for the neighborhood..." they want him to just keep his mouth shut and be like everyone else. i lived in an orphanage in russia until i was 9, and the "who do you think you are, you belong to this, different is bad" vibe reminds me of the bullies back there, adults and children alike.

The "Laika" lines definitely refer to the Russian space dog, in that Laika's was doomed to his demise (they knew that they couldn't bring him back). Basically, they're saying that the subject of the song is hopeless.

On November 3, 1957, she was sent in Sputnik 2 out to space. She died up there from overexhaustion and dehydration. He body was disenegrated along with Sputnik 2 on reentry. Her death was not told until ten eyars after. She has many monuments and statues in her memory.

Since I see this song as being about isolation and other conflicts, I see the vampire representing an outside force such as a person who is influencing "his older brother." Since vampires in myth are known to literally bite and change a person into a vampire, the song could be using it metaphorically to describe how this "vampire" or person influenced and changed his "older brother" but that's just how I interpret it.
