Mercer really does a good job on this vocally but his affect is so flat. To contrast this with him in the 1940s and 1950s is to see what time & illness can do. He fought depression for years, in large part because the 1960s weren't about his kind of music and the work dried up. Yet reportedly he was working on a musical with Andre Previn, and Paul McCartney sought to work with him, when he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in 1975 and died a year later. And the angels swing....
Johnny Mercer was absolutely fabulous - yet I only recently became aware that he had written or performed so many of my favorite songs from years ago. I Remember You. Skylark. These are a couple of the greatest songs ever written. Thanks for your post.
How wonderful! (Was this not just 2 years before he died?) Someone a person my age never had the chance to see perform, but wish I had. Thanks so much for posting, can't say how much I enjoyed seeing this!
Saw this last night on BBC 4. Mercer's fab of course but it's a top notch band also. The detail of the sound is so clear. Now, if the beeb would mind serving up the Mercer interview with Humphrey Lyttleton in its entirety, please!
I love this man. Savannah, Ga.'s Johnny Mercer. The Man

One of the greatest songwriters and coolest singers who ever lived. So much musical genius in one lifetime. We were blessed! RIP Johnny.

This is great, but I honestly prefer Bing Crosby's version of it. Johnny is however the original composer so I gotta give him props for that.
