In the US, dental schools use poor people, who otherwise can't afford dental care, as practice subjects for dental students. Given that having nice teeth isn't prioritized as highly in Japan as it is in the US, I wouldn't think there would be any shortage of poor people with dental problems for students to practice on. This robot seems like an unnecessary expense.

Compared to the prototype, first announced in 2007, this robot is much more advanced...and there are plans to release the robots commercially.
