First off to everybody, Spike Lee directed this film...pretty sure he's not racist towards blacks. -.- Secondly why does it seem that in todays day & age it's okay to poke fun at every race, religion, etc. EXCEPT black people? Like i'm part mexican & i don't get all bent out of shape evry time i hear a taco or border joke, stop being so fucking sensitive...
Blackface is so incredibly ridiculous and outdated that it isn't really relevant to African-American politics anymore. But it's incredible to see that that this stuff use to be part of mainstream entertainment.
Who cares what they think of us? It's suppose to be about what 'WE' think of us. Blacks shouldn't have taken those roles. It's one thing for our enemies to put out negative stereotypical images, another thing altogether for us to sell out and play Sambo, Coon, Mammy, Sapphire and Uncle Tom roles. Asians and other minorities don't demand their image in movies and on tv because they know that they won't be shown favorably. We need to put out OUR OWN POSITIVE images.
@mistarcraw No, it's because of Stalin's destruction of the army and because the biggest resistance against occupants were in Russia. And last but not least it's because it was the only real front in WW2, and it was where the main battle was going on. Also, Hitler didn't want to exterminate Slavs, because it was 2+ millions of them in Wehrmacht and because they weren't a minority like Jews
Ignore the images people! Shut up and listen to one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded in movies! And it's not available in this form anywhere.
@dangar45 actually Hitler greatly admired the American white nation. Britain too. he wanted to exterminate Slavs though, which is why there was such an enormous death count, concentration of military forces, and vicious genocide on the eastern front
To clear up a bit black face originated because of slavery in the mid 1400's in Portugal when black people were not allowed to act on stage. I mean sure it's
Offensive but I think also people are too damn sensitive
We are a beautiful people with so much potential. In a sense, we forget that we are made in Gods image. But when I see the historical images that continue to plague us today my heart is broken. Have we escaped these images or do they still exist in society especially the black community? Do these images promote self-hate within black people while creating a barrier against black pride? This is part of our history but as Marcus Garvey once said, "Our history does not begin with Slavery."
In America, people have used "blackface" to defame those they cannot justifiably hate, such as, apparently, gays, Muslims, Hispanics, and Blacks most infamously. Second, in every culture, there is at least one person who becomes famous for using this "blackface" to make their culture look bad for their own profit. What examples can you give?
This is what they thought of us then & think of us today
Question: Who IS the THEY?
Hollywood or The People Hollywood is trying to purport BLACKS to?
Please: IF (Colored, BLACK, African American, Nigga)NOTE: I'm 48 years old, my "ethnic origin" hasn't change ONCE! Are you sure someone STILL isn't keeping you "SLAVES"? (NO OFFENCE) Pay NO ATTENTION TO BIAS! A PERSON PROVES THEIR CHARACTER BY ACTIONS & IF YOUNG PEOPLE ARE WATCHING OLDER PEOPLE, ACT LIKE FOOLS, THEN FOOLS IS WHAT YOU GET.
...and young people say censorship is more lax now than it ever was...I'm like "are you f%&king serious?! There's shit they had in the old World War era that would never be broadcast on TV these days."
@28weeks2die Gosh, why do we have to acknowledge the racism and ridicule that blacks went through in America? I'd much rather watch another Holocaust movie for the millionth time...
For better or worse, it's a part of American history. For every racist cartoon, there's a genius jazz composer like Sun Ra/Pharoah Sanders/Billie Holiday who rose above the bullshit. Not to take away from the struggles of black folks in this country, but we spend so much goddamn time obsessing about negative shit that we overlook the very real contributions the black community has made to america.
for the record al jolson, the one who performed mammy in "blackface", was a jewish-american. so y'all can save that holocaust jewish racism-victim talk.
@fellaent Chech out the book called secret relationships between blacks and jews they werer invol;ved in the slave trade and capitalized from it the most.
@fellaent Racism's not a zero-sum game. Just because someone is racist doesn't mean that they are incapable of being discriminated against. I mean...the Shoah DID happen. And Jews HAVE been persecuted.
@UtopiaMinor666 I don't believe you're black or being serious. These characterizations must have been incredibly harmful with such a small amount of media exposure. You're view on race is incredibly naive, are you a teenagers or something? Whe u grow up you will see that most people see their race as the in group
Why does this have to be racist? What if there were people who actually looked like what they were parodying instead of just thinking they are going at an entire race?
As a black man, these images do not offended me in the slightest, but i do respect that fact that they are made relevant. They are apart of American history, and for what people in this country have done, Im still an American. I do not refer to myself as African American becuase i do not refer to other races as (Blank) Americans. I judge people on their character and content like MLK wanted us to.
When I see the Tea party acting as they do and some of the comments I hear and seeing the issues in Arizona I believe Race is still a big issue and this video stands out as why we need not to be racist!!!
I feel as if we've made great strides towards equality in America. I have never been a fan of Tyler Perry's work because his work simply portrays black people, particularly black women as ignorant, violent idiots. Spike Lee couldn't have been more right when contrasting the coonery of Perry to John Singleton's work. Note how Perry refuses to look at any of the merit of what Spike Lee is saying. He just tells him to go to hell. He knows it's true.
@alinalin0 if you have a concept if injustice you may understand why it's sad. It's hard to reason for yourself why so many people form a certain group hate you, say untrue things about you, kill you, have genuine despise of you, instead of being friendly and kind they will go out of their way and teach their very own children to hate you. You ask why for the rest of your life and never get an answer. Why do you find it cool alinalin0?
@alinalin0 have you seen this film Bamboozled? Do you really think it's only about stereotypes of watermelon and chicken... I used to think stereotypes were funny too until the negative ones get associated with you. It strips the dignity from a person in that they are no longer an individual but a categorized group of ppl. I suggest you read a little about "Blackface", it's the issue that Bamboozled tackles, what are the roots of the stereotype and where does it lead to?
@koberpat There are far worse things going on in the world today. I think all the fighting around race and religion is just masturbation. People need to get over it and worry about important issues.
@alinalin0 true true but a race of people suffered evreyone remebers the holocaust why not the last few hundreds of years you can forget racism but i wont
Wow, seeing this makes me ashamed of my Caucasian lineage. Thank God people like Spike are here to be sure society sees such errors and hopefully never repeats them. It is the same idea as awareness of the Holocaust so it never happens again. Things aren't perfect, but realizing ignorance is the first step to ending it. Skin color is irrelevant, people are people... if you disagree you are ignorant and such ignorance plagues our HUMAN race with self destructive actions and words. Enough said.
@keeponjammin456 adding to this, being racist and complete douche bags is one thing, but they aren't even being clever of funny or witty. It would be one thing to play a respective African American role being white, looking the part and so on, but throwing the stereotypes in, I think, was a ploy to try and compensate for god awful writing in shitty movies that would probably not be known if not for being racist. Again, may not be entirely true, just my theory.
I never understood the correlation between blacks loving chicken and watermelon and that of racial stereotyping. It just doesn't seem that offensive or negative to me. I mean, if you think about it, every culture and race has their own preferred foods. I just don't see how that is deemed insensitve or wrong. unless i'm way off or wrong, If someone could help me understand this it would help me learn something new.
its hard to see the offensivess in things when u dont belong to that group. Jokes r made about asians (rice, chow mein, sushi), blacks (chicken, watermelon, kool aid), hispanics (burritos, beans, tacos), but where are the jokes about white people and what they eat? there arent any! most stereotypes about whites, according to my white friends, dont offend them. those jokes are usually about dancing, golfing, good jobs and essentially things that only "reinforce their superiority"
@TheGodMan69 It's negative and degrading because people, especially Caucasians, but not ruling out everyone else, don't see African Americans as individual people, but generalizing them as a part of a group. For example, not ALL African Americans like chicken and watermelon. That's an assumption and generalization. This video shows how African Americans have been degraded by whites on TV, such
as portraying African Americans as monkeys in cartoons.
This video makes me really Sad... To think people where and sometimes are so shameless and ignorant in their head. I saw a painting resently in a museum of a "nigger band" thats how it was called... painted around this time. It had the same characteristic faces of "blackface"... I'm going to teach my childeren that there is diversity in the world and that everyone is equal nomatter what. We won't participate in events such as Sinterklaas as blackfaces running around like "dumb/idiotic" clowns.
Spike lee is a genius .... and a courageous radical advocate through his films...Noone else is intrepid enough.. let alone care enough to educate and expose the His Story ...of those ignorant monsters who's responsible for RAPE,ROBBERY,MURDER,BAMBOOZLENESS, CONQUER, AND HATRED throughout the Planet..... It's simply Their History... But knowledge is Gold...
@CrimeReport well the neanderthal had to learn the ability to defend against attack to avoid being a victim. now these days were doing it thru law. so egotistical thieves of land such as you will be defeated for your contradicting ways. your depiction of god is false btw. if you are one of those egotistical maniacs that think you are the creator let me see you walk on water. and if you drown i think it was best for society. :)
@rickuhrick in a time where we have not only the first black but first minority president we need to focus back on a time when science and other innovations were the occurrence.this era is not only a black renaissance but a renaissance of the country. no more baking soda they need to be killed off like nino brown in new jack city. i want to see another garret morgan pop out the woodwork.innovation.
Racist cartoons from the 1930s and 40s like this were not meant to be cruel. They were just reflecting the mood of the times. There racial stereotypes of all ethnic groups in this country; Chinese, Italians, Japanese, Jews, Mexicans etc. and most people weren't offended by them. That was the just the mood of the times. There are plenty of blacks who enjoy the LITTLE RASCALS & AMOS & ANDY and aren't offended in the least.
If I know my Spike Lee, this music is by Bruce Hornsby, the whitest guy the planet has ever produced. However, this is a shameful reminder of the awful legacy of cinematic racism. Made me very sad.
@DoomCity202 No, there are PLENTY of options - if folks will TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK FOR THEM (key phrase). Ever heard of: Oscar Micheaux (from the EARLY 1900s - he was the Spike Lee of his day), Julie Dash, Ayoka Chenzira, Charles Burnett, Frank Gooden (writer/director of the EXCELLENT, "Love Trap"), Haile Gerima, Ava Duvernay, Reginald T. Dorsey, Kent Faulcon, Rob Hardy, Ousmane Sembene, Ken Saro Wiwa, and several others like that? The old saying is TRUE: Seek and YE SHALL FIND! Peace!
@EarWax0 LOL, ive been seeing all the comments you left on this vid! your not even a racist (wannabe). you just came on here to try and get attention from black people lol sad
@EarWax0 I'm hispanic, close though ;D Get a life,no one cares what a racist say, because you're all stupid and have no balls to even say such things in public. How pathetic? ;)
@falleinloveshoes7 thats why were in the punch a bigot in the mouth era. because you never know who you talking to. who knows where that person was raised.
@ryanmazdaLAX Don't feel ashamed. Our generation has learned from this atrocity (I'm a white male) and the most powerful thing we can do is teach old children differently than generations past. All we can do is continue to "unlearn" what has been passed down to us from our forefathers.
It is a common tactic by the privileged to look back on instances of blatant bigotry an racism (and sexism as well), and basically say "Hey! Look at how much better things are than they used to be! I guess that means there's nothing more to fix or work towards, and anyone who says differently just WANTS to be offended over something!" I think its important to examine what we do today, and how ashamed we'll feel in 50 years looking back at a more ignorant time...
@AutumnDevi Sadly much hasn't changed. Now celebrities like Beyonce and other black celebrities are having their skin lightened 4 shades lighter, given green or blue eyes, and blonde or light hair on magazine covers through Photoshop. I guess Hitlers idea of beauty is still present in our society.
@xanderqw This is the theme from the film, written by Spike's frequent collaborator Terence Blanchard. He's brilliant, and "Bamboozled" contains some of his best music.
@Zeanu A credit? Read your history book. Black face was originally a way for white men to appear on stage in many parts of America, as blacks were prohibited from standing on stage. Jim Crow was a character created by a white man who used the burnt cork to make his face black. But, judging from your post, you don't know who Jim Crow is.
A credit to black people? WTF? Credit it to white racism. When did a black man want to make white people whiter? Think about it. BTW, I'm white.
@tommyrock69 C'mon listen to yourself. "Black face was originally a way for white men to appear on stage in many parts of America, as blacks were prohibited from standing on stage."
The white man wanted the black man on stage so badly! HE PUT ON BLACK FACE TO BECOME THE BLACK MAN!
@EarWax0 I know, right? You should kill yourself, and then you won't have to deal with those mean, bitchy Niggers and Mexicans. Shame on them for making your life more pathetic than it already was, with your wallowing in your own self-pity and such. It's a damn shame. >:(
notice the poster of this video linked a blog with "revolution" in its name. His/her racism is not a surprise. The things covered in this video are undeniably awful and sad, but to generalize that nothing has changed and that "they" all still see black people this way (which was not the case even back then) is ignorant and racist. Racism is racism.
Boycott Modern Day Minstrels, Buffoonery and Coonery starting 4/22/2011 (Release date of the third Madea film, just a month after Big Momma's House 3.) Demand diversity and deeper concepts. Establish balance now!!! Help us fight against hegemonic encoding, mass media mind control and stereotypical characterizations.
I fucking hate how we live in the PC age. Cartoons and movies aren't available due to everyone bitching and moaning that it's racially insensitive. I'd just love to send a letter to the NAACP or whoever the hell is always complaining and just simply tell those jackasses that it was just the times back then. By you simply "erasing" these projects as if they didn't happen you're doing more harm then good.
You also have to consider that not all parents are smart, some will tell their kids to ignore it but we also have to assume that some parents are racist themselves and perhaps even enjoy watching such cartoons. Other parents may not even know that it has any effect on their children. Therefore, they need to be educated through such means like Bamboozled.
you know I'm not being mean here (though someone will always assume that) but from many black people ive seen...they increase their own stereotype..and then get mad when someone whos not black mentions it...I mean I get it..slaves = bad and racism = bad dont have to tell me twice but I wouldn't worry so much about cartoons and movies showing black people, or any people for that matter a certain way so long as those actual people show the world they aren't like that.....jersey shore anyone?
@RemusLupo Let's think for a second, we know that a child's brain, their thoughts etc., is shaped from an early age by what they see and hear. If yer have such cartoons and films depicting a false image it won't matter whether its false or not, this is what they will believe.
well if parents can explain to thier kids that they cant walk off a cliff and survive like wile e coyote than i hope they would teach them to respect others..im not saying bring these cartoons back...but just...ignore it i guess....i know its hard but we have to or else people will always be mad about it..maybe im wrong
I remember when Spike tried to get the House of Mouse to give up those old cartoons with Mickey Mouse in blackface and they blocked him. Just the other day, I was watching both Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel with my 4-year old Daughter, and saw some straight-up new millenium minstrel show bullshit on there. I quickly changed the channel, and explained to my Daughter why we don't watch that mess. I want to thank Spike for making this film. Sadly, not enough people learned a damn thing from it
So sad but Spike really did see what was coming.

TheGodMan69 5 months ago
@TheGodMan69
its hard to see the offensivess in things when u dont belong to that group.

I hope this post helped you out.

It's simply Their History... But knowledge is Gold...

Peace!

AutumnDevi 8 months ago 5
@AutumnDevi Sadly much hasn't changed. Now celebrities like Beyonce and other black celebrities are having their skin lightened 4 shades lighter, given green or blue eyes, and blonde or light hair on magazine covers through Photoshop. I guess Hitlers idea of beauty is still present in our society.

What's funny is that a lot of those people are actually black.
And blackface was more of a credit to black people.
Zeanu 9 months ago
@Zeanu A credit? Read your history book. Black face was originally a way for white men to appear on stage in many parts of America, as blacks were prohibited from standing on stage. Jim Crow was a character created by a white man who used the burnt cork to make his face black. But, judging from your post, you don't know who Jim Crow is.
A credit to black people? WTF? Credit it to white racism. When did a black man want to make white people whiter? Think about it. BTW, I'm white.

@EarWax0 I know, right? You should kill yourself, and then you won't have to deal with those mean, bitchy Niggers and Mexicans. Shame on them for making your life more pathetic than it already was, with your wallowing in your own self-pity and such. It's a damn shame. >:(
EvanesceExotica 9 months ago
notice the poster of this video linked a blog with "revolution" in its name.

Boycott422 9 months ago
I fucking hate how we live in the PC age. Cartoons and movies aren't available due to everyone bitching and moaning that it's racially insensitive. I'd just love to send a letter to the NAACP or whoever the hell is always complaining and just simply tell those jackasses that it was just the times back then. By you simply "erasing" these projects as if they didn't happen you're doing more harm then good.

@BCoriginal1 I know, right? Blackface is wonderful and shout be used much more often
liesinpale 9 months ago
@liesinpale I never said it was wonderful. I'm just willing to accept that at that place in time it was the norm.
BCoriginal1 9 months ago
You also have to consider that not all parents are smart, some will tell their kids to ignore it but we also have to assume that some parents are racist themselves and perhaps even enjoy watching such cartoons. Other parents may not even know that it has any effect on their children. Therefore, they need to be educated through such means like Bamboozled.

liesinpale 10 months ago
you know I'm not being mean here (though someone will always assume that) but from many black people ive seen...they increase their own stereotype..and then get mad when someone whos not black mentions it...I mean I get it..slaves = bad and racism = bad dont have to tell me twice but I wouldn't worry so much about cartoons and movies showing black people, or any people for that matter a certain way so long as those actual people show the world they aren't like that.....jersey shore anyone?
RemusLupo 10 months ago
@RemusLupo Let's think for a second, we know that a child's brain, their thoughts etc., is shaped from an early age by what they see and hear. If yer have such cartoons and films depicting a false image it won't matter whether its false or not, this is what they will believe.
uzmynem 10 months ago
@uzmynem
well if parents can explain to thier kids that they cant walk off a cliff and survive like wile e coyote than i hope they would teach them to respect others..im not saying bring these cartoons back...but just...ignore it i guess....i know its hard but we have to or else people will always be mad about it..maybe im wrong
