The animation of the two series is the same. This video here is from the theatrical remake of the Japanese version of the series. It came after the series.

I have only been exposed to the 80's enlgish version of this series called "Robotech". I think they did a pretty good job and I love it either way. However, I would love to see the uncut version of robotech, er, well, Macross I should say. I can tell you now that I'd probably love both versions either way because it is a very intersting story. :) This is probably my most favorite Sci-Fi anime. :) This was beautifully animated as well.

Also, I dislike Minmay with a passion lol. Rick and Lisa!

This anime film is so visually stunning. classic 80's anime like this are more visually stylish and vibrant than modern day CGI movies. Anime like this is the reason why some think the 80's was the golden age of anime.

That was totally different series - Genesis Climber Mospeada. But Robotech, well you probably all know the story behind that one.. as it was just a redub/compilation of 3 different anime series. Either you hate it or like it. I personally prefer the original Macross. Where Zentradi stumbled upon proto-culture or "proto" culture as in the 1st culture - human/zentradi ancestors, instead of some b/s ultimate energy source in Robotech.

Macross is way better than Robotech.But guess we in Britain and America had to have our bread and butter and eat it i spose.But its all Macross in the end either way and thus it is good question?? cause this is a thing that has been puzzling me In Robotech they had the Invid in Macross I dont think they did did they. now in Macross Frontier we have a race called the Vajira a hive mind conciousness very simliar to the Invid even led by a queen that could be compaired to the Regus in Robotech.

The Invid were never in Macross, period. Robotech was 3 different anime series from Japan in which Harmony Gold tried to fit together: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Calvary Southern Cross, & Genesis Climber Mospeada. Macross II is the only other series thats alternate storyline from this movie. But everything is follows from the movie, Macross Plus, Macross 7 series, Macross Frontier and Macross Zero which is a prequel to this.

Though i am a rarity in that i still find some of the background music from Robotech more enjoyable than the silence filled scenes in Macross and while i find the Macross intro song good, the Robotech theme is just better imo.

Everything else goes to Macross of course.

I watched the TV version in 1982 (movie version in 1985) and didn't know why he didn't choose Mei. But now, I really understand his choice.

By the way, I am surprised so many non-Asians know this Japanese animation. In fact, it is still famous in Japan, HK and even many Asian countries now.

One of my favorite anime films of all time. The whole idea of using culture, through things like love, music and humor as an immediate cause of distress between two opponents was fascinating. Doesn't get much better than "Macross: Do You Remember Love?"
