Oh yeah, I loved this show when it was on. Sadly, I don't think it was repeated much in Australia. I'd love to see it again. Pity no eps have popped up on Youtube.
I used to watch this show all the time as a kid...and always remember seeing both of these guys in later shows and would think "thats the guy from Tenspeed and Brownshoe"!
Holy cow, I didn't know this was out on DVD! I'll have to see about getting it. I fell so hard for Jeff when I saw this show back then I even told my roomie that I was going to marry him! I was 23 at the time, lol!
ajivins1 must have been thinking about someone else.Jeff's Lionel Whitney did have a black belt in Karate.More often then not he bested the thugs. He had a particular and memorable kiai that never fails to put a smile on your face.
@TheDeadmanRules Mr. Cannell also appears in person in the episode "This One Will Kill you" Jeff's character Lionel can't stop to get his autograph he'd dearly love to. He has to make a fast get away.
Woah bad news people! MCI's listing for the show on their website does NOT say complete series on the box and says on the page '12 episodes and they are...' and the two hour pilot ISN'T going to be on the DVD!!! Now I would have been pissed, but could have lived with two random episodes missing but how can they not have the pilot?! They should wait until they can do it right!
Yet their pre-publicity claimed all the episodes plus the two hour pilot would be included. The entire show makes no sense without the pilot. It would be very obtuse and ridiculous on their part if it were left out. Let's hope someone forgot to put that detail on the website and it really is on the DVD or else I'll have to post the whole darn thing myself.
@chuckcollins Well if you have the whole pilot that would make it worthwhile. Its in two different places on their website listing a specific episode count, the dvd cover has been changed from an early preview to OMIT 'Complete Series', and not listing the pilot in the episode names so sadly i think its accurate. DUMB DUMB movie. I am BEYOND upset.
@chuckcollins Here's their reply to the email on the matter: The rights to the pilot are held by CBS and they were unwilling to negotiate for a royalty in exchange for the use of the program. Due to this unsuccessful negotiation, we are unable to include the pilot along with the remaining episodes. Thank you for your interest in Mill Creek Entertainment and its line of products. Please feel free to contact me with any additional inquiries or comments.
That would be like putting out a DVD for "THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN", without the first episode showing how he got his bionics. While the series is certainly entertaining, you have no idea how things got to where they are. I am disappointed and find it very weird that ownership belongs to CBS for just the pilot movie as the entire series was filmed under the same aegis.
Nonetheless, I will be posting the entire pilot very soon right after the current episode and commercials.
@chuckcollins I find it even stranger that CBS cares so much about a 30 year old show. What was so damn hard they couldn't reach an arrangement?
Glad to hear you'll be posting the pilot. now I can at least keep my pre-order for the rest. What file format is it in? I'd be interested in maybe mailing you my flash drive for the whole thing. Then I can upload it on to my playstation 3 and watch off the TV set.
"Salvage 1". Another of those great high concept ideas with a very likeable cast of soap opera veterans that somehow didn't fly as high as the network wanted. Andy Griffith, Joel Higgins and Richard Jaekel all went on to bigger and longer-lasting things. Trish Stewart, on the other hand, seems to have been left behind on the moon!
I can post that opening very shortly if anyone would like.
Ah, Richard Jaekel-did he ever get a decent full-time job? wasn't he also in 'Eddie Capra' with Vincent Baghetta or something? I always used to get him mixed-up with the English actor Frederick Jaeger-henchman to Gough and Cushing in the 'Cybernauts' Avengers episodes
He co-starred with the patron saint of show-killers, Robert Urich, in "Spenser For Hire." He also appeared in "Baywatch" on a regular basis. Nonetheless, he stayed working for 50 years until his death at age 70 back in 1997.
Ah, think he was also on the credits of a film Iv'e never seen called 'The Green Slime'. Back onto TV-heres something I can't find any mention of. The bloke who used to play the Snoop Sister's valet come chauffeur got his own show as a shabby cop in (I think) an old Lincoln but was partnered-up against his wishes with a female cop played by Kim Bassinger who had a 'Herbie'-style souped-up Beetle. I think it had a Porsche engine. The show ran for one season and was called 'Dog and Cat' over here
Jeff oldblum's character Lionel Whitney was supposed to be a black belt in Karate' but his consience had him always forewarning the thug of this beforehand, which meant he usually got duffed-up before he got a chance to use his 'skill'. Does anyone remember Ron Moody as an English 'Clouseau' in an eighties American sitcom called (over here) 'Hart of the Yard', I think it may have been called something else in the States like 'Nobody's Perfect'?
Yes. "Nobody's Perfect" ranks in the US as one of the first shows to ever be cancelled BEFORE it was even aired! It was scheduled for fall of 1979 and was even listed in TV Guide just two weeks before the season started and was removed from the schedule.
When it finally aired, I could see why ABC was hesitant. There's alot of physical comedy and no Peter Sellers in sight. Ron Moody is better-remembered in the US for his starring role as Rothgo on "Into The Labyrinth".
Blimey! You got 'Into the Labyrinth'? That thing was pretty bad. I know it was only supposed to be a kid's thing but I'm reminded of a critic of the Beeb's 'Star Trek'-'Blake's Seven' saying how he was amazed by the show as he never thought he'd see anything with a lower budget than 'Doctor Who'! '-Labyrinth' looked like it was made with whatever the cast turned-up on set with in their pockets! Surely he's better remembered as Fagin in Oliver over there?
When it started out, Nickelodeon was commercial-free and ran shows from Canada and England on a regular schedule. This included a long run of "The Tomorrow People" as well.
You're correct, though, that he is best remembered as Fagin, but "Oliver!" is rarely shown anymore.
I think old Moody is still around although 80ish so wouldn't be up to a gruelling run but 'Oliver' has been running non-stop in the West End for about twenty years now, different Fagins though! 'The Tomorrow People'? Oh look, I'm sorry, whether its the 70's one or the 90's one. they were basically super-Nazis with their disregard for 'saps' (homo-sapiens). I recently caught 'Chocky' on youtube which is presently being remade by Spielberg. Its John Wyndham so a bit smarter...
Cover art can be seen in the MCI ad that shows up in the 'related videos' tab. You know my nearest Target store sells a lot of MCI tv shows like 'Wiseguy' and 'Day Break' for 5 bucks. If 'Tenspeed' is 5 bucks upon release with a young Goldblum on the cover, it could sell like hotcakes. Your video count might go through the roof too for people who've never hears of this show
I remember this show with fond memories. It was funny and clever if I recall. It was also done with quality slightly notched up over other shows of the time.
The thing I have to wonder about is if I'd have the same opinion of it today.
The reason I say this is that this show was definitely great relative to the complete crud that typified 70's TV.
The show is also based on two plot devices that were relatively novel in 1980 but were used heavily during the 80's and 90's. They are the "buddy cops" and "fish out of water".
Shows that followed in the same vain of the "buddy cops" and/or "fish out of water" included Moonlighting, Lethal Weapon, 48 hrs, Beverly Hills cop.
But at the time, these concepts were relatively unused. You could say Tenspeed and Brown Shoe were a template for popular cop/crime shows for the next two decades.
Having viewed episodes when originally aired and again more recently, I can state that they definitely hold up to the test of time.
Your analysis is very correct. The plot was essentially Angel gets Rockford in trouble every week and they have to come up with a way to get out of it alive, never mind getting paid.
It's amazing how infrequently anyone turns a profit in Stephen J. Cannell's universe but manages to pay enormous fuel and repair bills on their sports cars and helicopters.
Raymond Burr told a fan who wanted to know why Perry Mason never lost that she only saw the cases he tried on Thursdays (or whichever day CBS aired it) - similarly, maybe we don't see the cases Jim Rockford takes where he gets paid! Or the A-Team ditto, or also Nick, Cody and Murray...
Perhaps. But the odds are that when one types it into the search bar, a singular term is more likely to be entered. Hence, the current prestidigitation. Irregardless, it ain't hurtin nuthin.
i used to love this show, stayed on for a season i think
