Poor compared to what? Ok, fine, those guys are better, but they're professionals. Plus, the recording quality (and the drums themselves) are poor, both of which have nothing to do with their playing technique.
No offence meant to your buddies, but the technique is not good compared to the average good drummer in Turkey. The left hand is all wrong for what they're trying to play(especially HAREM), and the rolls are weak and sloppy. Try not to be offended. Just look to the real guys; if you follow this guy, then your skills will be poor. Technique is technique. Sit in a music store in Istanbul for a day and watch guy after guy dingle on the darbukas there...you'll see what I mean. ;)
No offense taken. He's not a "buddy" of mine... I don't know him. I know what you mean, I just don't like to see people throwing around critical comments that could turn people off of drumming and learning about other people's cultures, especially if it's something they enjoy. I guess just try to be encouraging and positive. These guys have some skills - they just need to clean up their technique a bit and it'll be rockin' even more than it already is. :)
The guy in the video (on the right) is our drum teacher and he's been playing for a looong time. He's also fantastic on the Riq, Daf, and any other Frame Drum you put in front of him. The guy on the left has been playing for about 2 years. I personally put in about 8-12 hours per week on the dara, but I also spend the same amount of time on Djembe and Dununs. I've been playing for about 18 months and am not at the level of these guys. Cheers :)
Yeah, Matt's super cool. We're very lucky to have him as a teacher. I got inspired to learn after seeing him performing a couple of years ago. The videos don't do him justice. Seeing him live is something else!
