I'm an american, and I say Ovi Maps is better. I've used both Google and Ovi, and Ovi is better...mainly because the surfer dude guides me to where I need to go.
if u talk about gps navi.i would say nokia free ovi maps voice direction is superb compare to dumb quite google map. as u know when u drive, u dont need to look at the map.just hear the voice while in taking direction
@najibnk that's not true, both use internet connection, even in Nokia Maps if you prefer you cannot use internet so you have both options.
Besides Nokia Maps have real traffic information , + millions of points of interest adn the main thing, the maps are updated more regulary so you have a better map.
it is stupid to compare these two- ovi maps are totally free. this means you can have independent standalone navigation. Google maps navigation requires an internet connection. Assume you went to a foreign country and hence connection to internet is either expensive (due to roaming) or not possible (may be your service provider does not have any agreements with the local companies)- then what? No internet- no navigation. Ovi maps on the other hand means navi anywhere...
You guys literally have my ideal job. "Hey man what do you want to do today?" "lets drive to San Francisco and take a couple phones with us to compare nav systems" Im still working on picking up one phone with navigation! Truly amazing. Love your reviews. Keep it up.
Comparing screen sizes is idiocy...aside that, did you use preloaded maps in E72? You should, that will save you some money AND time. And BTW, Google Maps does not support that quite yet.
I don't understand why Aaron or somebody is talking about the screen size. Nokia N900 screen has same size like Nexus one and it uses ovi maps and Nokia E72 isn't actually touch screen phone so it actually has pretty big screen to be phone like that
@felipe200794 or perhaps you should be banned ;)...people have different preferences, I could not live without the physical QWERTY. So let's both be banned :)
Yo man nice video but Here is one question for you google navigation works with internet so with a data plan ... but the e72 works offline without anything no dataplan nothin ... its normal that nexus one have better real time tracking !
And an important question so if i buy a e72 from nokiausa.com i will have free navigation with data plan ? in offline like you ?
I have a nokia mx 5800 and it is perfect for navigation not slow at all the screen is bigger! I love nokia ovi it! It uses satellite and does not use network, it is free! What about google navigation?
@07liberian no i didn't mean the 5800 or n97 is better than the e52...but they have bigger screens....that would have been easier to show in the video
BUT I MENT THE DISPLAYS OF THEM ARE BETTER FOR SUCH A YOUTUBE VIDEO BECAUSE THEY ARE BIGGER AND THE PEOPLE WHO WATCH THE VIDEO CAN SEE THE MAP BETTER ON A BIGGER DISPLAY
@keksi255 I Had The N97, It May Not Be Slow In General But It Is Slower In Every Aspect Including Youtube And Maps ThanThe E72. I Agree That It Is Nice To Have A Big Screen So You Can See Better But I Prefer Speed Over Big Screen.
Beside That, This Is A Dogfight And The N97 And 5800 Are No Match For The N1. Notice How The N1 Is Just A Tiny Bit Faster Than The E72, You'll Notice A Huge Difference Between The N1 And N97. Then You'll See That The Big Screen Does'nt Matter In This Particular Test.
I once used the nexus one for navigation for about 2-3 hours whilst charging through the 9v cigarette lighter on a sunny day. What happen was the nexus one got so hot that the touchscreen stopped working. The phone and navigation was still working but I had to used the trackball.
i agree with you that nokia e72 lags, but make a video in 2010 with nokia 5800 with the last version of ovi maps on it. i think the performans will be the same ore better on nokia, i use a 5800 in italy and it works better than a tom tom. ) i will wait for a video with a 5800

You shouldn't be comparing the phones and you SHOULD be comparing the systems!
Also, how can you compare speeds to update when the e72 is ON EDGE, while the nexus 1 is on 3G. If you wanted a fair competition you should have used a n900 and n97 and both should have access to the same network speed.
Its not perfect yet because its a completely different operating system but it works decently well. ovi maps on n97 would have been a better comparison against a nexus 1.
@frontmoney21 It works decently well? Dude, I have the N900 too. First off, there is no turn-by-turn navigation. Second, it doesn't come with preloaded maps. Third, Nokia PC Suite doesn't support the N900, so you can't load any maps. Ovi Maps for the N900 is a JOKE. I use Sygic. Sygic FTW!!
@eugeniu23 You clearly haven't read my comment, so why did you bother posting a response? You CANNOT load maps with Ovi Suite because the N900 is NOT SUPPORTED.
Why would you pick an Android phone with a large screen size and a Symbian phone with a small screen...And then have the cheek to compare screen sizes!
That's like having a van and a mini cooper and complaining you can't fit as much stuff in the mini. Well duh.
You didn't really show the good things bout ovi maps. like y would u say that it has a smaller screen when you can use a nokia 5800 with free navigation. I don't think the review is fair.
you should have used N97/mini or 5800XM in compare with the big screen N1...
I used Ovi Maps Navigation on 5800XM few times in HK (which there are more tall building affect the performace of GPS/AGPS than in SF). It is amazing accurate even when the car is in a tunnel! The car driving speed shown on 5800 is accurate too!
My OVI maps on my E71 is not free. Idk, it says my license has expired which is not cool. I dont wanna have to pay for GPS when Noah says it should be free =(
Nokia are still rolling out the free navigation on s60 phones with gps chips, you will be able to get it free soon. Just keep the faith and keep checking.
why on earth you would compare navigation on different size screens? why didn't you compare N97 or n900 with nexus so it would have similar size screen? worthless review, really...
I move from Nokia to allow free navigation on their phones (well, most don't have it yet but are told they'll have it soon) is just genius. And the fact that they are one of only two companies with the entire globe mapped makes it very good. Maybe in the US with a data-plan Google nav wins but all and all, having offline navi in your pocket abroad is just very very clever. And in Europe people travel abroad more. In my book, all situations considered, Ovi maps wins.
My vote goes to Ovi Maps just not on the E72. It's free navigation anywhere in the world. We can't use Google Navigation in Europe yet but even if we did, you can't travel through countries and use it because it'd just cost of a data connection.
To have been a more "apples-to-apples" comparison, the E72 should of had active service like the Nexus - allowing A-GPS to kick in. Would have been more accurate(?)
yep I thought what also. But then again Nokia did pretty good considering that in only was using GPS. Google nav will be a stupid idea outside of your country because of roaming costs.
@Devastationable Ovi maps have maps of over 74 countries (pre-loaded maps that can be downloaded on to memory card). It even has maps for Iran, phillipines and Iraq which is pretty impressive. Ovi maps has better support and Nokia owns Navteq which is used in Garmin devices.
@efadaei Android phone nowadays bundling with 3rd party navigation software... my optimus one using Ndrive and its free... anyway look at this wikipedia..org/wiki/OpenStreetMap
don't think it's fair.. Nexus One has a 1GHz processor, and the E71 has a 433 I think. For a real comparrison, you will need phones with the same hardware... or similar. :)
Yeah I was surprised too when this is a comparison of two NAVIGATION SOFTWARE and not hardware but the first thing they come up with that the Nokia has a smaller screen and slower to recalculate...
With OVI Maps you don't need to use your data allowance since you can download the maps onto the device in advance, also what about when you don't have a strong signal like when you are travelling, OVI Maps won't have a problem. Also the NEXUS One's voice is horrid it's just a text to speech solution isn't it? I think OVI Maps is much more like a proper Navigation software, like Tom Tom...
