No no, si habla, nothing to do with South America here, Ponty was in Paris and introduced to these African musicians. They got together, no rehersal, just bam most excellent music. Its all about the driving, complex rthyms they produce, with Ponty freelancing over top. I agree, Ponty's most enduring work, and recorded on a whim!
Regina Carter has a recording that came out recently that reminded me of this recording somewhat. It's called, "Reverse Thread". Also one not to be missed.
The African musicians in this band make the record happen, Jean Luc is just there for the ride. I love Jean Luc but this is not really his thing. It also happens to be his finest recording in my opinion.. Saw the band when it came out. It was apparent this was the band's music, not Jean Luc's. Glad it was recorded. Brice Wassy, Guy N'Sangue....OMG!!!! Beautiful eargasmic bliss!!!
Jean Luc is simply Great! This is a master piece and my favorite with Yeke Yeke! I simply love and never stop listening to! His interpretation of Mam Mai is so magic! Mega thanks for posting athough i have the CD i wish to see him in live show!
@soundquality You are wrong. This is a sound that will touch anyone who bothers to pay attention. I know what you mean by musician, but that doesn't apply here.
@lorioftheforest Well, I see what you are saying but I was speaking on the music in my own experience with it. If it were not for what I was studying at the time and if I never became a musician an any right, I would have never heard this music, and heard or known of Jean- Luc Ponty, Brice Wassy, Guy N'sangue or Mokhtar Samba. Just saying. ;)
After having heard about Jean Luc from whom I thought was my father at the time, I saw him at Philadelphia And purchased Tchokola shortly thereafter. great album, only now I need to replace the tape with a cd................
@luke55664 I remember seeing the Tchokola Tour in Phila at the Keswick Theater. I had been a Ponty fan for years ( the old stuff, they synch phase..etc..etc) I remember how warmly this new sound was recieved by the crowd. I sat 3 row from the stage that night. Ponty is coming back to Phila this summer with Stanley Clark, Zappa, Chick Corea, Dont miss it.
