i think a lot of americans are caught in a sort of logic loop that prevents them accepting UHC can be good. it goes like this: we are the greatest country in the world > our health care must be the best > other countries must be inferior because we are the greatest. Big pharma and insurance companies who lobby politicians just need to mention the world "socialism" and the status quo remains.
It really is a terrible system. It'll get to the point where you wont even get treatment in an emergency situation. (We currently have the law that doctors have to treat you in an emergency life or death situation) I wish more people watched and believed Michael Moore, the problem is he's not a very likable person, so people are quick to just ignore him.
It's not just Moore's personality that some people despise; it's his message. Sometimes the truth is really uncomfortable, and people would rather just ignore it.
It doesn't happen in America - that's the point you fool. EVERY other civilised country in the world (and some not too civilised) have a NATIONAL health service. And the big secret is the government is the only purchaser of health services, so it drives the price down (doctors not too happy but hey, they'll survive). I live in Australia. We've had universal health care since 1975 and everyone is covered (EVERYONE).
I lived in Japan (national health care) and just moved back to the US. The US government and media (corporate-owned) use scare tactics and talk about loss of "freedom." I can also say -having lived in both systems I have no freedom under the US health system. I never imagined having to call an insurance company to ask and plead to be covered -despite having an "insurance card."
I live in Australia and we have Medicare universal health care. Although it has it's own problems-long wait for surgery, it's still there. if i have an accident, i can be guaranteed that i won't be asked for insurance (even though i have it) the moment i step into the hospital.i hope such persons as yourself come together to bring this most basic human right to all of your fellow americans. its a travesty that the world's wealthiest economy cannot provide such basic services for its people.
In Japan I had freedom from emailing, corresponding, calling, faxing companies, hospitals, and billing companies. And most of all freedom from paying my own cash for treatment (a suppossed human right). No freedom here in the US under corporate health care. The corporate beauracrat is king.
If it's easy to find $400,000,000,000 to provide war contracts for the Iraq War, then we can logically conclude that it's easy to find enough money to insure 50,000,000 Americans to they can go to the hospital when necessary. I can't even imagine what a million dollars looks like. And we've spent $400,000,000,000 on the war.
Well, it's certainly true that we have a bias towards war funds. As the british guy in Sicko said "If we have enough money to hurt people, we have enough money to save people". We should take a huge chunk out of the Defense Department's $500 Billion budget and use it for healthcare etc.
On the other hand, I'm unsure about your tax idea. If we get rid of the income tax, people will indeed have more money to spend. But then, with higher sales taxes, wouldn't people tend to spend less? It seems that you'd have the same problems either way.
Many Americans are so addicted to spending that it wouldn't really matter if you put a 20% markup on the higher end products, in my opinion. Those that mindlessly spend $100,000 on a luxury car probably won't mind an extra $20,000 added to the price. And the kind of people who spend $5000 on a designer purse probably wouldn't mind spending an extra $1000 , etc. In a way, it's like income tax, but those that are wealthy won't even notice it.
If you get rid of income tax, Americans will spend more money. Then you can put a tax on all that merchandise we buy and use it for health care. I think we can at least pay for one doctor visit (general check up) and one emergency room visit per year. I think every American who makes under $100,000 a year deserves that. That's the LEAST you can do.
This is how I see it: we Americans are really good at being consumers. So I think we should get rid of income tax, and tax what we BUY. You could put a 20% tax on SUVs and that money could be used for universal health care. Look at how many SUVs are sold here. Put a 20% tax on an iPod. Get the picture? Tax what we buy and then provide health care for those that can't afford it.
In Great Britian we have NHS free health since 1948 and we have one of the worlds strongest economies so dont believe a lot of the lies told to you by the media and insurane companies
Too true man, we may get told that its appauling and fails at every turn. But it cant be that bad. Our NHS does its job and helps people, no matter who they are.
I'm happy to be the first to comment, and this guy is very intellectual and is right about this stuff. Hell, more movie reviewers should be like this. He saw Sicko, and he formed his own opinions with help from the movie. If more people were like him, our world wouldn't suck so bad. And I didn't know anything he's talked about before now, and he's added some easy to envision comparisons that make it all easier to understand. Rate this guy a 5 and keep this in mind.
Thanks! I really appreciate it. (And if you have the time, would you mind watching the "crazy conspiracy theories" video I made? For some reason, all the comments are pro-conspiracy, despite my arguments to the contrary. It'd be nice to have just one comment of support. But whatever; no pressure. I'm happy enough that you watched the Sicko video. Thanks again!

Well, some people get treated at an emergency room and then they don't pay the bill. That's another version of "free health care."

if you can spend money on killing people you can spend money on helping people. its simple. So dont believe all the rubbish your told by fox news.
