@7in1 I would like to get one of these devises. Do you know where I can purchase this? Is it a specialty item or can it be found at my local hardware store? Thanks for the info.
I'm new to growing wheatgrass. I tossed my first flat of wheatgrass seeds because of the mold. Also I didn't let the wheatberries sprout before I sprinkled them on the potting soil. I researched & discovered that 1 tsp of food grade H2O2 in a quart of filtered water & then sprayed on the sprouts will kill the mold & add oxygen to the wheatgrass. I started spraying store bought trays of wheatgrass too. They like it very much. Stopped the mold fuzz after 3 treatments.
@metaspherz Yeah, I have heard about the H2O2 and will purchase some the very next tray I grow. I am growing a tray now and I have NO MOLD issues because of the fan. check back with me to see how future trays are thriving. I will get over to your channel as well. I would love to see your production. Thanks for commenting
@redloverose ok, I am about to begin another tray and I will buy a fan to circulate the air in the room. Is it necessary to put it directly on the grass or just in the room where the grass is growing?
@313HealthyMe The fan will help a lot. Mold doesn't like moving air. You will proably have to keep more water or an eye out for the grass through since it will dry our faster.
I too have had mold on every tray - I'm fine tuning how much I water. I've cut down in the past, but not far enough.
I recently watched a video that showed spraying this: 1 quart water mixed with 1 tsp. baking soda and 1/2 tsp. dish soap (I use the natural dish soap - now I wonder if Dr. Bronner's would work) and it will stop the mold.
Out of my current 3 trays, I have 1 tray with a quarter size patch of mold. I sprayed it today, so I'll see. The other 2 are mold free.
I think I may have figured out a perfect solution. Get some oil of oregano and put a few drops into a spray bottle with water. It is a really potent anti fungal, bacterial and viral even at very low concentrations. It is also very good for you.
That sounds like a great idea! Plus, I've already got some.
I'll try this if (when? ha) the trays I'm growing now get mold.
Now - next batch of WG, I'm going to try Dorothy 7476 method in her video " wheatgrass video #2" it's with no soil. That's what I"d really like to perfect. She's been growing soil free for 3-4 years.
Thanks so much for sharing this information, I really appreciate it!!
I am also going to try my next batch with no soil. I was thinking it might really help to put a few drops of oil of oregano in the soaking water when sprouting the seeds. I have read that the mold that comes on wheat grass is on the seeds themselves and perhaps the oil will kill off the mold spores before they even get a chance to develop.
Oh! I wasn't aware of this, what about the sunlight it will need? We are getting snow right now and other than the days light, I hardly see the sun much at all. Can I use a sun lamp indoor for the wheat grass?? How would I do this. I also would like to grow my sprouts but need the sunlight to get them green. Any ideas?
You don't need that much sunlight, i also don't recommend direct sunlight
(direct sunlight will burn it)
i live in UK thus we don't get much sunlight . Unless you are thinking of growing it for marketing no need to buy lamp (some people use natural sunlight during the day and use lamp at night making the growth twice as fast but its not worth the cost on electric bill)
You can leave it near your window And that will do.
Just for the record when i told you to use lime i mean to say once the wheatgrass is over 2inc if you spry the lime juice during the sprouting it will not grow.
once its over 2inc its OKAY.
Don't worry about it grass is easy to grow
Just give it water, sunlight and look for mold when you get time.
On the side note i just wanted to tell you you can use the leftover (leaf ) for skin care cream few hours before bath.
i thought is would become useful in saving you money on skin cream otherwise you can keep in in a container and use it as organic home made compost. ( i saw your videos and you have lots of fruit and green in your diet so what you don't eat can be used as a compost just not animal product).
Don't bother with fertilizer its not worth the cost and its harmful
I've had luck dealing with the mold issue by using a drench of 3 tbs of Listerine (or euqivelent store brand menthol/eucalyptol) mouthwash per gallon of water. I put it on with a sprinkling can and harvest a couple of regular waterings later.
NICE! I hadn't thought of this before and I feel much more at ease with Listerine than the food grade hydrogen peroxide. I am beginning to understand why farmers use chemicals on crops.
food grade hydrogen peroxide is definitely preferrable to the regular pharmacy topical stuff. they are different concentrations, etc.... :) hope the mold battle is over!
Well, it certainly appears to be a thing of the past. Since I have been letting my grass stay outdoors, I have not seen any signs of mold growth to speak of.
I get mold on mine too. I read that you mix a tablespoon salt into some warm water and spray it onto the mold. I do it and it hasnt hurt the grass and if you do it early before the grass gets high, it will usually take care of the mold. I still use the grass just cutting above the mold. But i am going to try the h2o2. You know you have to get the food grade peroxide tho.
OH CRAP! food grade peroxide????? YIKES!! I been spraying my grass with the regular peroxide you get at the store in the hygiene isle. I put about 2 tsp for every 2 cups of water. Eeeek! Hope I didn't poison myself...hahaha
Hahaha probably not. I read that there are several different types of hydrogen peroxide and you have to ask the pharmacy for the food grade type, it also will have to be diluted to use. It is best to look it up before you decide to use it.
@StarFlower99654 salt! yikes!! salt is the enemy of greenery. Try food grade hydrogen peroxide in a very dilute mist. maybe they meant baking soda not salt.
Hey I have a solution for the mold......Gabrial Cousins says use a part hydrogen peroxide in the water AS YOU ARE in the SOAKING STAGE of the whaetberries~!!!!Try that!Let me know if that works
ok, so soak them in one part water one part hydrogen peroxide? This is before I plant them in the dirt right? I will have to try my next batch this way.
Well the update to this is that I have set my wheatgrass outside for the past 3 days and NO MOLD!!!! Weeeeeeeeeee. I think maybe I had been watering it too much. Also, the warmth inside helped the mold to grow. I will take a vid of the tray of wheat grass now so you can see what I mean.
hmmm i will like use less water hopefully this will like [revent mould also where the plant is matters about the mold too

An UV-bulb-air-cleaning device fixed inside room where your growing takes place should kill all spores of mold in the air.

recently watched a video that showed spraying this: 1 quart water mixed with 1 tsp. baking soda and 1/2 tsp.
that works. I like a light spray of above but one cup to two tlb. spoons of water no soap. It will do fine.

ok, I have two trays currently growing so I will give this a try. Thanks for the tip

ON the other two are you using the Dr. Bronner's?

I didn't use anything on the other two because so far, they're mold free.
I sent you a message so I could type it all out more fully.

I've also heard about using grapefruit seed extract, 6-7 drops in the soak water. I've tried that twice with so-so results.
I'd like to try your oil or oregano oil idea.

The only way you can stop the mold is by starting a new one ( trash the wheatgrass, wash the tray)
When you start on new
Use a fan for 5-8h a day everyday
Keep it outside and away from direct sun light., don't use too much water
theracemixer 2 years ago 2
I haven't grown any lately due to the cold weather so when I begin again, I will certainly give this method a go. Thanks for sharing.
313HealthyMe 2 years ago
@313HealthyMe
You don't really need to grow it outside (indoor will do just as good and maybe better)
You can also try freshly squeeze lime juice (don't use ready made from the store)
The acidity of the lime will prevent the growth of mold
