Stop generalizing that every Greek and Turk have inter-mingled with one another for thousands of years! Many have and many have not due to religious beliefs and for other political reasons. Greeks, Turks, Armenians, Assyrians, and other minority tribes have lived together in harmony and respect, in the Asia Minor region, for hundreds of years based on good economic and regional reasons. It was the rise of the Young Turks that ended this all!
I'm Turkish too. And I have same opinion like you. Turkish and Greek people have many things so closed. Our cultures are not so different. When I was living in Italy I had many Greek friends. It was a pleasure each of us.

J'aime cette chanson! I like this song. It certainly makes you think here. I have always liked rempetika (though I'm not Greek - I'm a Franco-American). From the translation of the lyrics that the person provided, this could be used for any tragic event. World War 2, World War 1, la Grande Dérangement à 1755 (quand les Acadiens a été expulser par l'Anglais), etc.
Pour moi, words alone can't describe how beautiful and tragic that song is. It's more powerful than, say, the aria "Vesti la giubba" from the opera "Pagliacci". Very beautiful song.
rebetiko still sounds turkish to me - especially the way the moustached man in the beginning sang. i could say that the greeks and turks have influenced each other by music, architecture, cuisine and some other possible influence. the greeks have been living in turkey since the time of troy. some turks have greek ancestry anyway - only that their assimilation into turkish culture and embracing islam make them consider themselves turks.
That's funny. I think you may have it backwards. Turkish music sounds like Greek music to me. Why? Because I don't hear this kind of music in the tradition of the peoples in and around the Altays (where Turks came from), but I do hear this music, for instance, in more ancient forms of Greek music, like Byzantine music and in music of other peoples from Anatolia (pre-Turkish migration), like the Semitic peoples.
mjay22 wrote: "the greeks have been living in turkey since the time of troy"
I wrote: "It is as if you said that the Aborigenes have been always living in the Australian anglosaxon state"
Guide for Dummies: it's wrong to say that the indigenous people were living in the state that the newcomers/invasors founded... 'cause that state simply didn't exist! Instead of giving a geographical definition (minor Asia), mjay22 used a national term (Turkey). Very common turkish propaganda. Got it now?
Ancient Greece during the time of Troy were divided into many city-states. The one thing that these city-states have in common are the Greek culture they practised.
i didn't say that the greeks were indigenous to turkey, it was u that assumed it. i just said that greeks have been living in turkey for a long time. troy was a hellenised city, and for sure there had been greeks living there. in fact, turkey had been under the byzantine greeks before the ottoman empire and turkey were found.
When you are refering to "Turkey under the Byzantine empire" for what era you are speaking exactly? Because Turks came in Asia minor before 1000 years. Before that age they were on the steppes of Asia.
Furthermore Turks were never under the Byzantine rule, as Seljucks in the beginning and as Ottomans later. They have managed to establish a state since their first arrival in Asia Minor before a 1000 years.
2008G, i didn't say that the greeks were indigenous to turkey, it was u that assumed with your indications. i just said that greeks have been living in turkey for a long time. troy was a hellenised city, and for sure there would have been a number of greeks living there. in fact, turkey had been under the byzantine greeks before the ottoman empire and turkey were found.
When you refer to ancient times or even Byzantine times, you can't use the term 'Turkey' because Turkey didn't exist. The geographical term is 'Minor Asia' or at least you could say 'territories of present-day Turkey'.
Mixing up geographical & ethnological terms is a common tool of turkish propaganda to connect all ancient cultures of Anatolia with the turkish nation. The historical truth is that turkish tribes migrated to this area in 10th century AC, 2500 years AFTER Troy. Got it now?
Please, this is about music 2008G. There's nothing wrong in having things in common with the Turks and we do have things in common with them. The people that watch and enjoy rebetiko and come here to comment are not the enemy.
I never said they are the enemy. I never said it's wrong to enjoy this music. I simply cannot accept the nonsense I read in here. Are Greek & Turkish the same language because they share 5-10% of common words? NO! Same for music, same for culture. End.
jews are to blame for everything

This awesome sequence is as disturbing as the lyrics of the beautiful song that the haunting lady and the musicians sing; it feels ancient and timeless and mantra-like.

Dan1988A 4 years ago
Pour moi, words alone can't describe how beautiful and tragic that song is. It's more powerful than, say, the aria "Vesti la giubba" from the opera "Pagliacci". Very beautiful song.

rebetiko still sounds turkish to me - especially the way the moustached man in the beginning sang. i could say that the greeks and turks have influenced each other by music, architecture, cuisine and some other possible influence. the greeks have been living in turkey since the time of troy. some turks have greek ancestry anyway - only that their assimilation into turkish culture and embracing islam make them consider themselves turks.
mjay22 4 years ago
That's funny. I think you may have it backwards. Turkish music sounds like Greek music to me. Why? Because I don't hear this kind of music in the tradition of the peoples in and around the Altays (where Turks came from), but I do hear this music, for instance, in more ancient forms of Greek music, like Byzantine music and in music of other peoples from Anatolia (pre-Turkish migration), like the Semitic peoples.

"the greeks have been living in turkey since the time of troy" .... HAHAHAHAHAHA...... Do I need to comment this??? HAHAHAHA
...It is as if you said that the Aborigenes have been always living in the Australian anglosaxon state... HAHAHAHA

@208, why HA HA HA, my friend, hadnt Greeks lived in Anatolia more than 5000 years ? and they left there in 1922 sept ?
Or what history have you mention?

Guide for Dummies: it's wrong to say that the indigenous people were living in the state that the newcomers/invasors founded... 'cause that state simply didn't exist! Instead of giving a geographical definition (minor Asia), mjay22 used a national term (Turkey). Very common turkish propaganda. Got it now?
2008G 4 years ago
Ancient Greece during the time of Troy were divided into many city-states. The one thing that these city-states have in common are the Greek culture they practised.
mjay22 4 years ago
That's right. The greek city-states shared the same culture. (Note that culture is not 'practised'. Don't mix things up with religion.)
Yet, I fail to see any connection of your post to the previous comments.
2008G 4 years ago
i didn't say that the greeks were indigenous to turkey, it was u that assumed it. i just said that greeks have been living in turkey for a long time. troy was a hellenised city, and for sure there had been greeks living there. in fact, turkey had been under the byzantine greeks before the ottoman empire and turkey were found.
mjay22 3 years ago
mjay22
When you are refering to "Turkey under the Byzantine empire" for what era you are speaking exactly? Because Turks came in Asia minor before 1000 years. Before that age they were on the steppes of Asia.
Furthermore Turks were never under the Byzantine rule, as Seljucks in the beginning and as Ottomans later. They have managed to establish a state since their first arrival in Asia Minor before a 1000 years.
carsalcyril 3 years ago
2008G, i didn't say that the greeks were indigenous to turkey, it was u that assumed with your indications. i just said that greeks have been living in turkey for a long time. troy was a hellenised city, and for sure there would have been a number of greeks living there. in fact, turkey had been under the byzantine greeks before the ottoman empire and turkey were found.
mjay22 3 years ago

The people that watch and enjoy rebetiko and come here to comment are not the enemy.
kaliroi 4 years ago
I never said they are the enemy. I never said it's wrong to enjoy this music. I simply cannot accept the nonsense I read in here. Are Greek & Turkish the same language because they share 5-10% of common words? NO! Same for music, same for culture. End.
