I agree but Mercedes is famous for nothing but the chassis stuff, they are thick protection around the body so therefore it make Mercedes safer and safer. Basically hard as a stone for example. Airbags are just fine! The only problem is the more options you load the vehicle with, the more expensive the repair to the damage is... Ford has been famous of being first car makers, true, the problem with this transit is included with nearly all other american cars (no offense to those who like them)
tbh whole video is one big bulls..t. Sprinter in this video is a brand new generation II 2007 NCV3 model. Transit in the other hand is an old sixth generation V184/5 model. Video is misleading and untrue.
@R7I8P6Z Sprinters are terrible, rusty shite that can bankrupt an owner once the warranty runs out. 200k miles is nothing for a van if it's had 5 new engines, £40,000 worth of electrical repairs and a few bits of welding to patch up the rust!!
@discocreator76 dunno if you've actually owned a sprinter, but you must have ended up with the worst one in the world... regardless of this crash test, the merc is a great all round preformer. at the end of the day, people have different opinions,
These tests in my opinion don't replicate a real crash unless you were to hit a concrete block! They should use another vehicle (one already crashed?) or ask the makers to submit two motors for testing. Then crash them into each other, this way you get better accuracy because concrete blocks don't have crumple zones. I wouldn't worry about the rating as I think it is unreliable! I would also advise you don't hit any concrete blocks in any vehicle!
Hi 04smallmj, Only comparable for hitting a block of concrete which in reality is not going to happen too often. Maybe a tree would be more accurate since vehicles do tend to collide with trees more often than concrete blocks. This way would know what to expect if we hit a tree.
with regards to the price vs safety, all i'll say is you will DEFINATEY have to pay for one but you're not definately going to crash it!! and anyway transits have been made by ford for millions of years so i think they know a thing or two about what a van needs to be capable of! Das ist allas!!!!!
you would have had less injuries in the ford, less impact as it folded in more, this is how they are designed these days to crumble...giving the ocupants less force and whip lash, etc etc.....
regarding your comment that "German products have been very overrated for a long time now, although they ued to make good products, 25/30 years or so ago..." may I remind/tell you that the Ford's that are sold in Europe are all designed and made in Germany - their whole car and van range are German. So, according to your post, Ford's are overrated too...
The Ford looks like it absorbed more energy & may have actually resulted in reduced drver injuries, The wheel/axle moving down & under the driver may have resulted in reduced lower leg/anke/foot injuries. It looks bad, but the bending of the door may be more crumple energy absorbing, like a longer hood on a car normally would. Note the door stays locked . Look at the sprinter drivers head bounce fwd & back twice like a heavy weight boxer is popping him twice. Not very brain friendly.
that tranist isnt the same model year as the merc. the transit is at the very latest a 2005 model, a model thats been around since 2001 (mk6). you can clearly tell by the transits horizontally rectangular headlights (0:34 - 0:35) as opposed to a 2006 (mk7) or beyond version with vertically rectangular headlights. so why in 2007 are ford crash testing a 5 year old van that been out of production for a year? HMMMMMM something doesnt add up here!
@daniePM it does look faster doesn't it. the sprinter doesnt look like its anywhere near as fast. looking at the VW transporter T5 crash test the transit and the T5 look like they were run in at similar speeds (i.e T5 has major roof deformation/minor cabin intrusion) whereas the merc seem to come out of it suspiciously intact.
i got a 06 sprinterr so jus cuz of that ima vote for the sprinter :P
i so booked the fact that with the sprinter it doesnt seem as though its gonna fall apart like the transit did...but the airbags in the transit deployed faster... ima stay wid the sprinter though :P
ford transit very soft chassey . ford cars are good but the transit always knoon for rust under the body they not that good ford fiesta has a better body than a transit .even the old transit was a noisey van
In 2006 the Sprinter was brand new and the Transit was just about to be replaced. Also, the Transit shown was the model on offer yes, but it was also 4 years old.
@rasmus1984 Are you joking???? Are you blind or stupid, which one is it? Mercedes vans are the worst in the business for rusting, you see 6/7 year old examples covered with rust, at least the Ford will take 10 years to rust!!!
I'm in the transport buisness and my experience is that all transport cars are shit when i comes to rost. But Ford is a crap-car in general, so i would think they can't make any good transport wihecels either. But thats just an asumption. (excuse the spelling)
@rasmus1984 The Tables have turned nowaday, VW/Merc make rusty, unreliable crap where ford make decent, reliable cars and vans... German products have been very overrated for a long time now, although they ued to make good products, 25/30 years or so ago...
@3DPeter No, most MB vans over 5-6 years old are very rusty, have tempermental engines and electrics and are VERY expensive to repair. Ford, Renault, and PSA vans are MUCH better in every way.
My sprinter is an exception, because it still takes me everywere. I must sya that i blew up the engine, but it's 15 years old, did 400.000 kilometres, and has to haul heavy trailers from 9 foot high, 6 feet wide and 20 feet long, and whithout the trailers, i drive it like a race car, and put the pedal to the metal, so no wonder the engine blew, But i found an engine from a MB stationwagon for only 1000 euro's, and i'm on the road agian,
@discocreator76 mercs expensive to repair , guess you need a new mechanic , my old tranny cost me more in breakdowns and lost days , now a sprinter may rust , and the RUST is normally what causes the dodgy electric problems .
mercs no more expensive to service than a ford, actually a daily of same size costs twice as much in discs and pads ALONE than a beaten up old sprinter with over 500k on the clock and the sprinter that still does 80 on a m/way ,unlike a tranny or daily of the same age
@SMB67T I happen to know they are anything but reliable! I work with a fleet of vans at work and VWs and Mercs are appallingly bad, cheap and nasty and VERY expensive to put right when they go wrong (which they do, frequently!) Overrated is an understatement! I'd buy a Transit, or PSA van anyday over that German rubbish!
Okay, so if Mercedes Sprinter are bad, use a Volkswagen T3, it's will suit your needs. If you seriously do not like it, suit yourself, take a Ford Transit or PSA Van, I will not say anything, as I know that you have different opinions as me, but seriously, I do not think that the Mercedes Sprinter is as bad as what you stated. And also, I totally disagree your last sentence, German are not rubbish, they made trucks, cars, vans, buses, and are very popular now. :)
ford transits r the best van out there no compition cheap, realiable, first ever vans to be able to travel at 70mph first ever vans to have a 4 by 8 or sumfin like that tbh u cor beat a good ol transit and wats the chance of crashing it
@2008dodgeavengerse Guys you really need to read the comments previously made before you decide to comment yourself! This test was carried out in 2006. In 2006 these two models were the current offered by Ford and Mercedes and what because one is cheaper it is ok to be unsafe?
Granted the new shape merc was available in 2006 but so was he previous shape right up to 2007.. The new shape transit (mk5) was available in late 2006 also.
I know this for a fact as had all the above on a fleet of vans at workplace.
@ozvannews no it isnt. the 2006 model transit offered by ford was the MK7, what we see being tested is a MK6 (2001-2005) although you can find MK6s registered in 2006 they are not the 2006 designated model of transit. so why would ford want to crash test a 5 year old car thats about to end its production cycle? can you smell that? its the fresh scent of BULLSHIT
@2008dodgeavengerse It's not $90,000, you can get a low mile dodge sprinter for 15 grand or a new one for 40 grand. Only the motorhome versions sell for 90k. Did you know sprinter diesels last over 600,000 miles at 20mpg+ ?
Fords start getting transmission problems at 80k-120k, engine troubles at 120-140k and by 220,000 miles you'd spend 7000 in rebuilts.
@2008dodgeavengerse Just checked the Transit, it's inferior in so many ways, the 2 litre engine, the 4-speed transmission the small cabin, none of MB technology and it starts at $22k empty. Mercedes Springer 2011 starts from $36k.Chevy Express diesel from $46k!
It also depends on the circumstances of the crash. Barrier tests are usually in a controlled environment, but in real world driving, these vehicle differ in many ways. Mercedes has always been a leader in crash safety, but you're paying for it, it is not a free feature. Remember also that solid does not necessarily mean a vehicle is safer, as the secret to surviving a serious crash is energy absorption, not rebound. Just imagine your body's internal organs in a solid thud!!
With no reference points, it is hard to tell what speeds they were doing. The Merc could well have been doing 5 or 10 mph slower, it certainly seemed slower.
One would hope they are the same speed, otherwise it is a deliberate misrepresentation.
they used the same build year in both vehicles, a guy that worked for my dad had the same shape as in the video and it was within a month of registration date of my dad's new mk3 sprinter (same shape as in the vid)
Out of all of them though i prefer the mk2 sprinters, having driven all 3 models.
mine was a 313cdi MWB-HT
3.5ton 2.2l turbo 130brake
my dad's mk3 is the 315cdi (same engine but 150 brake) but it accelerates slower than the mk2
load those fuckers and then will see what happens, they are empty but made for transportation of goods. Most of accident with these things happen when they are loaded. They go fast like a car but handles like a truck.
The Transit crash test shown in this video was carried out in 2003. The impact forces measured by the crash test dummies were all well below the thresholds. In fact the result was so good, that Ford printed a report about the crash test in an advertising brochure which they gave away in their showrooms.
So
1. The transit did much better than it seems
2. Unfair comparison since the Sprinter crash test was carried out in 2006 when the new transit was already available.
don't worry this is the mark 2 transit, there is a mark 3 now which is even safer, also the dummies measurements were all indercating low damage so i wouldn't worry, at least it absorbed more impact!
its like comparing a product thats been out for years agains somethings thats just come out so not fair comparison the merc would make you a vegtablebound where the transit just kill you outright know which I would rather !! i would rather push my transit then drive a sprinter how about a comparison between the new transit and the new sprinter that would be a good comparison
Guys you really need to read the comments previously made before you decide to comment yourself! This test was carried out in 2006. In 2006 these two models were the current offered by Ford and Mercedes.
Guys you really need to read the comments previously made before you decide to comment yourself! This test was carried out in 2006. In 2006 these two models were the current offered by Ford and Mercedes.
@ozvannews : I do have the written brochure of that exact Transit crash test and it was carried out in 2003. Stop claiming it's from 2006 unless you can proof otherwise!
and why is that not true??? its tru to me. although i havent tryed the brand new sprinter but the ones that i drive are 04 plates and the gear stick comes out from the dash so you have to reach out for it. it pulls across my back. thats why i prefure a transit.
It's not easy to make a car that fits everyone perfectly. In my Citroen ZX, I have to lean a bit to get the fifth gear on. On the Citroen Jumper, I've got to lean for the wheel and in a E-class Mercedes I've got my arms pinned to my chest.
the sprinter is a 2007 model so the comparison is wron, i would rather be in the transit cos the body deformed so it took the energy out of the impact the sprinter took so much then suddenly stopped were as the transit slowed alot more than it, and any sprinters are shite vans, TRANSIT BACK BONE OF BRITAIN!
The Transit is Right Hand Drive and the Sprinter is Left Hand Drive so that is why you do not see a door for the Sprinter it is on the other side of the van.
The difference between these two vehicles is 10-15 years (about 2 vehicle generations) with the Sprinter being the newer. In two vehicle generations, especially over the time represented by these two particular vehicles, major advances were made in vehicle structures, energy management, and driver safety.
The comparison is about as valid as comparing a Ford Model-T to an S-class...
Nope, the Transit is the post 2000 model which was all brand new, totally ground up design. The sprinter is facelifted, but substantially the same as the original from years earlier. They are similar ages and similar vans, a very suitable comparison. Mercs build quality was always better though so this is no surprise.
i have been in a crash at 40mph in a transit and the cab stays intact. With our crash a Citreon C1 pull out infront of us whilst we were doing 60mph. Impact speed was 40mph. The citreon was in a right mess. But everyone lived just a little shaken.
The mercedes sprinter was a 2007 model. The ford transit in the video was available since 2003. Can't compare. plus the transit is not a official crash test and so we don't know at what speed it is going. You can't guess from that short clip either.
The under almost breaks in half.

MB all the way, now they come with the 3 years unlimited mileage warranty, you can't go wrong
we own sprinter vans that have covered 200,000miles+ that still drive like new,
plus extras like cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, eletric -windows as standard with them
an now i can see the van is reasonably safe.
i wouldn't mind seeing these vans in the same test with the actual weight within them, the 3500kg will most certainly show a bigger difference

The Sprinter is a larger van than a Transit
A Volkswagen Transporter has about the same result as the Transit shown here

re: GanjamanCLP
they used the same build year in both vehicles, a guy that worked for my dad had the same shape as in the video and it was within a month of registration date of my dad's new mk3 sprinter (same shape as in the vid)
Out of all of them though i prefer the mk2 sprinters, having driven all 3 models.
mine was a 313cdi MWB-HT
3.5ton 2.2l turbo 130brake
my dad's mk3 is the 315cdi (same engine but 150 brake) but it accelerates slower than the mk2

think many of you haven´t even driven one, but think, they could say somethin about it..
the transit is quite good to handle. the sprinter looks gross at the inside and it´s like PeterRST said.
the transit and other transporters got more power and safty than many other cars!
and also a full loaded transit is good to drive and handle.
this cars aren´t even made for transporting goods. They are also made for transporting people and stuff like that!

load those fuckers and then will see what happens, they are empty but made for transportation of goods. Most of accident with these things happen when they are loaded. They go fast like a car but handles like a truck.
Stralis123 2 years ago
I agree. If you are going to test commerical vehicles for safety, load them up in a typical scenario. It should be real world testing.

I have got an 2007' sprinter with 184HP and it's a really good car!
MultiHalle 2 years ago 5
sprinter is not a car it is a van idiot, also my transit ST has 240 bhp! so ford beats merc in vans at least
jaffacake1578 1 year ago
@MultiHalle I know you own it so you should possibly know this....a sprinter....hold on, brace yourself.....is a van

@MultiHalle its called a van dumbass

the ford is better becose it absorbs the energy the front of the car go's under the driver and passangers so it looks wors but its not

@1984duvelke: You probably don´t want to see the drivers legs after an accident like that.

PeterRST 2 years ago 3
1. The side doors in the Transit crash test turn into cactus. It was not a good result by any means.
2. The new transit uses the same platform as the old model, so the comparison is fair.

This is why I own a Mercedes Benz Sprinter

a 2007 merc sprinter, This test was carried out in 2006. In 2006 these two models were the current offered by Ford and Mercedes.
saints96262 2 years ago
shit, i'm driving a transit at work. i think i'll drive even more carefully know.
scottyburen 2 years ago
don't worry this is the mark 2 transit, there is a mark 3 now which is even safer, also the dummies measurements were all indercating low damage so i wouldn't worry, at least it absorbed more impact!

mercedes

neguimate 2 years ago
its like comparing a product thats been out for years agains somethings thats just come out so not fair comparison the merc would make you a vegtablebound where the transit just kill you outright know which I would rather !! i would rather push my transit then drive a sprinter how about a comparison between the new transit and the new sprinter that would be a good comparison
madmark50484 2 years ago
Guys you really need to read the comments previously made before you decide to comment yourself! This test was carried out in 2006. In 2006 these two models were the current offered by Ford and Mercedes.

NOT TRUE at the beginning of 2006i got my mark 3 transit, the one after this!
jaffacake1578 1 year ago
New sprinter.
Old transit..
Shouldn't they both be new or both be old to make a fair test..??

but the new transit is only a face-lift of the mk6
zincdustdust 2 years ago 3
that model of sprinter is construction from 2006, transit with small front lights is construction form '00... Any question?

I like sprinters cos their fast but transits are a better drive and are more comfy cozy
themilksnatcher 2 years ago
It's not true
deodriver 2 years ago
and why is that not true??? its tru to me. although i havent tryed the brand new sprinter but the ones that i drive are 04 plates and the gear stick comes out from the dash so you have to reach out for it. it pulls across my back. thats why i prefure a transit.
themilksnatcher 2 years ago
It's not easy to make a car that fits everyone perfectly. In my Citroen ZX, I have to lean a bit to get the fifth gear on. On the Citroen Jumper, I've got to lean for the wheel and in a E-class Mercedes I've got my arms pinned to my chest.
ruiferreira89 2 years ago
actually a transit is faster than a sprinter, type into the youtube bar: sprinter vs transit fifth gear
jaffacake1578 1 year ago
Guys you really need to read the comments made before you so that corrections do not need to be repeated.
The test was carried out in 2006.
The models used were both 2006 and the current models being sold in dealerships by Ford and Mercedes-Benz.
The Test Speed and Conditions are identical and controlled so an accurate comparison.
Lastly I am sure the people of Turkey are really proud that the van the built is the back bone of Britain since Turkey is where the Transit is made.
ozvannews 2 years ago
thats a mk6 transit (2000-2006)
the sprinter is a 2007 model so the comparison is wron, i would rather be in the transit cos the body deformed so it took the energy out of the impact the sprinter took so much then suddenly stopped were as the transit slowed alot more than it, and any sprinters are shite vans, TRANSIT BACK BONE OF BRITAIN!
bigmastif 2 years ago 2
No speeds indicated. The Transit could have been much faster - who knows.
andi285 2 years ago
Both speeds were the same the tests are controlled.
ozvannews 2 years ago
no they were not just take it that ford beat mercadies
jaffacake1578 1 year ago
@jaffacake1578 because mercadies doesnt even exist as a brand
lilemotom 1 year ago
Wouldn't the transit have way more weight in the back than the sprinter due to the body style and the sprinters missing back door?
keithrockpro 2 years ago 2
yes you're right: this comparison is NOT correct..:(
giacotubo 2 years ago
Comparison is accurate
ozvannews 2 years ago
no vehicle had weight in the back.
The Transit is Right Hand Drive and the Sprinter is Left Hand Drive so that is why you do not see a door for the Sprinter it is on the other side of the van.
ozvannews 2 years ago
This is a bull-shit comparison.
The difference between these two vehicles is 10-15 years (about 2 vehicle generations) with the Sprinter being the newer. In two vehicle generations, especially over the time represented by these two particular vehicles, major advances were made in vehicle structures, energy management, and driver safety.
The comparison is about as valid as comparing a Ford Model-T to an S-class...
atnette 3 years ago
Nope, the Transit is the post 2000 model which was all brand new, totally ground up design. The sprinter is facelifted, but substantially the same as the original from years earlier. They are similar ages and similar vans, a very suitable comparison. Mercs build quality was always better though so this is no surprise.
greg12312 2 years ago
The choice between a T Model and an S Class is the point the test made.
People should be fully educated before make a purchase decision.
Safety is important
ozvannews 2 years ago
also make correct comparison is important!

i have been in a crash at 40mph in a transit and the cab stays intact. With our crash a Citreon C1 pull out infront of us whilst we were doing 60mph. Impact speed was 40mph. The citreon was in a right mess. But everyone lived just a little shaken.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter it;s the best
adriantrzepla 3 years ago
At the time of the test both models we current so a direct comparison is accurate.
ozvannews 3 years ago
The mercedes sprinter was a 2007 model. The ford transit in the video was available since 2003. Can't compare. plus the transit is not a official crash test and so we don't know at what speed it is going. You can't guess from that short clip either.
So, no, a direct comparison isn't accurate.
streetstream 3 years ago 3
not at all!

you cant compare theese 2 vans because that transit is old whereas that sprinter is more modern
