By the way it wouldnt make much sense to put a Turbine at the end of it. And even a filter would be hard to clean down there. I think it is nothing more than a controlled overflow, and maybe a funny way to go down to the other side of the dam. So it is less dangerous than the bigger vortexes in the middle of the water that suck you to the ground.

Its a spillway. Water goes in, then drains at the bottom of the dam on the other side. And if a person went in, they would die. A girl named emily schwalen fell in one. She was hanging on the edge for twenty minutes while people tried to help her. But them she fell and drowned. This has become my worst fear.

The most dangerous thing about this piece of idiotic engineering is that you can't actually see it from the surface of that lake. And if you are not local and decide to take a boat ride, chances are you'll end up in this hole. Do they care? Nnnope. It's cheap, that's what's important in the State. :-)))

@Maloy7800 first of all the concrete is designed to stop anything from going down as you can see a tree trunk in the lower right corner second no one goes near it third the park ranger tells you about the spillway and to not go near it if you rent a boat to the locals and visitors. and as YOUR chances go no one has ever went down it. @Maloy7800 no one in a boat would get that close to a shoreline, always worried about damaged props. If you look, it's back in an enclosed spot as well, even if a boat does venture into the area, it will be a low speed or idle.

Doesn't make it any less terrifying tho... stuff like this makes me shiver. It's some kind of phobia... if I can't see the bottom it freaks me out, especially when water in involved. I wouldn’t even get close enough to it to video it like this guy did

@Maloy7800 there's a concrete wall/barrier there with a fence on top, nobody is going to land there. as you can see by the tree in the bottom right corner there's a lip that prevents things from falling into it other than water that goes over the top. + the only place a boat can make a landing is on the left side. after a certain point it turns into trees again, so nobody is going to really get near it trying to make a landing. + it's loud, and if someone where to go there they'd be idling.

@milldabeast519 The reason it is located at the "top" with that concrete lip is to minimize its impact on the rest of the lake. As it is now only water that laps over the top is pulled downwards. Were it to rest on the bottom it would create a massive whirlpool, or vortex, of downward rushing water. Imagine a tornado in water, pulling anything near, into it and downwards. This would be far more dangerous.

@Demosthnes006 if you put THIS pipe at the bottom(if it was 10 feet deep) it would create a whirlpool. but not if its done properly like most dams. multipul smaller pipes would be no problem and if it was deeper like 30 feet it wouldnt be an issue. just some simple design would do it. they have them in many lakes to allow fish to swim up. sometimes they will have a j pipe in there to prevent this whirpool. this is a horrid design. grade 8 students could design a better intake

@e4m2a0n Actually a glory hole is an overspill or overflow protection device, it isn't what feeds the hydro electric turbines. If the tubes were designed right and you held your breath, you'd probably just go on one helluva water slide ride. Of course the surface would probably grind your skin off and the vertical drop would kill you. The overspill usually meets up with the ejected water from the turbines too, but you wont be thrown into a meat grinder.
