It's a good thing this concerto will be played even more (well, I know Kissin and Lisitsa are playing it) now that it's Scriabin's 140th birthday next year!!! :)
@WOWdato It's clearly not easy (the key doesn't help), but I doubt it's beyond any serious professional soloist or orchestra! That said, the Schumann E minor is a lot easier than it sounds.
@AdamGillett You mean the Schumann A minor... or the Chopin E minor, perhaps? In which case, neither the Schumann nor the Chopin are easier than they sound. The Romantic period was definitely not the period where piano music was written to sound harder than it was - just listen to Liszt's first concerto or either of the Brahms... they are as difficult as they sound, perhaps even more so. All of these great concerti have their own unavoidable difficulties; no matter who is performing them.
@AdamGillett This should be performed more often, but because of the complex rhythmic interplay between the soloist and orchestra, it requires more than superficial rehearsals. So it's hard to pull off
I think he was positive. Composers like Rimsky-Korsakov and his contemporary fellows thought that the work had potential but it had been heavily revised by them. In fact Rimsky-Korsakov saw the early version of the concerto with some weak parts (according to them). It's normal since it was for the young Scriabin the first attempt of composing a concerto. (not sure of this though i need to check my book but I don't know where it is)
Rimsky-Korsakov said this when he saw the sheet : " Regardez-moi cette saloperie. C'est au-dessus de mes forces. Je me sens incapable de me mesurer à un tel génie brouillon. Je n'ai pas le temps de nettoyer Scriabine. "
Sorry It's French. I will try to translate: " Look at this trash. It's beyond my strength. I feel incapable facing such a messy (or disorganized ?) genious. I don't have time to clean Scriabin."
Thank you so much for sharing another beautiful music art! Epic! Music always enhances and inspires our lives! I'm glad to hear that your Japan trip provided you with new music ideas*^o^* Thank you again & have a wonderful weekend☆
I've never been this addicted to a piece of music as I am to this concerto. I'm 73 years old and have just discovered Scriabin's music. If not for You Tube, I might never have discovered it. Thank God I didn't miss such beauty! Thanks Starwalker. Hearing this concerto for the first time was a priceless gift.
@phoxee That makes two of us addicted to this concerto! It is my great pleasure to share this music. Scriabin has been my favorite composer since my student years. His later music is equally fascinating.
@phoxee, you and me both. My addiction began 6 months ago when I stumbled on Tamar Shavashvili playing Scriabin's "Poeme Tragique" (search for it here on youtube!!! It's breathtaking!). Without youtube, I would have remained in painful ignorance of AS's genius forever. What a bleak prospect! I stand open-mouthed at people's assertion that he was a 'second-tier composer". Huh? I think he helped invent modern music while still being a master of the old. Who else can say that???

My favourite movement from one of my all time favourite classical compositions (though I adore the entire concerto). Can effortlessly transport me to the dizzying heights like a true poem of ecstasy (which of course is the title of another sublime though perhaps more avant-garde / challenging Scriabin piece, for all the latter's spellbinding, mystical power).
I especially love the end of the concerto (what a finish) with all the majestic piano chords and the "valse" like moment. I don't know how to explain it...

Scriabin......so great and so underappreciated. He wrote so beautifully and he really got interesting when he left Chopin behind.

this concerto is so amazing! and the pictures really fit the music.

This concerto stands up easily against the great Romantic piano concertos - this should be on equal billing with Grieg, Schumann, Rachmaninoff etc.
Much like Haydn, Scriabin is oddly ignored!

Me too! Among the greatest... and highly romantic and intellectual music too

@AdamGillett you right, but it's rarely played because of difficulty and orchestal part is difficult also.
