I really want a new dog and i have been looking at a lot of breeds. I want a huge dog. Are all of them that large or is that like really big for this breed?
What a big, beautiful dog! The only downsides: cost of feeding and meds(heartworm); and relatively short lifespan. After owning several giant breeds, I've concluded a medium sized mixed-breed might be a better choice. They tend to have fewer genetically linked illnesses, they live longer, and there are so many available for adoption/rescue.
For our pup (nearly 12 months now) he gets 200 grams chicken thigh (no bone, no fat or skin), 600 grams of Hills science diet dry food and 200 grams of pasta. Now he is a little older he is starting to cut down on his morning meal, so that amount is now starting to drop. If you get one of these dogs, be prepared to accept the fact that they eat as much as you. In most cases they eat better than you do.
PS: They love to just be with you. They need attention yes, but then every dog needs attention. They are not a dog for someone who keeps their dogs outside all the time. They want to be be a part of the group...as I write this my leo just came up and licked me from neck to ear.
They will love you for ever if you treat em right, feed em right, play and take them for walks. One of the best dogs I have ever had. Oh, I hope you don't mind dog hair and slobber :D
@warhero40000 That's normal size for a leo. Of course, not good to let them jump on people though. We see lots of leonbergers in our area, they're almost as popular as the dane and english mastiff.
Yes they are, I've only known two people who have owned them. My guess is they are expensive to take care of with food and everything else and that's why they aren't a commonly seen or heard of dog.
@wormmy158 . Leonbergers were bred in the 1800s by a priest to resemble the coat of arms of the town of Leonberg in Germany which is in fact a lion's head, so you have a bit of it right. At first they were bred to look good and then they became working dogs. They are now used for search and rescue and water rescue. hey are related to the Newfie, Gt. Pyrenees and St. Bernard. They have webbed feet and are very strong swimmers and naturally will try to get people out of the water.
So can most shepherds and other big loyal dogs. Leaving either a shepherd or a Leo on it's own is generally a pretty bad idea. Big dogs like them need companionship
I am a fourteen year old boy living in gothenburg sweden who really wants a dog. I live pretty near the city but there is places in the woods near to go and i've talked about this with my parents. I've also got quite a lot dogs recommended but this i have found myself and as i want a gentle noble and nice dog this seems to be my solution. One problem is that my school is usually from 8'o clock in the morning til 15:00 Ca. If i get one this is going to be my first dog.
I have two Leos and my first Leo spent his first two years in Brooklyn, NYC and went to work with me everyday. Leos do well in the city if they have the right stimulation, training and owner.
If you get an Leonberger you shoud definately live on the countryside. If you live in the city you shouldnt have this kinds of dogs. they should have a nice life on a farm or something like that... i've been growing up with theese dogs so i know quite much of them... And yes they do need lot of attention But it's worth it so long you got the time
they do need alot of attention and they dont like to be left alone very much. If you do need to leave them alone they should have another dog to play with.
yes they need a vast amount of attention otherwise they will be prone to separation anxiety and that's when problems occur, such as chewing of furniture and a sad dog. so if you can not be with your dog for lots of time get him or her a playmate. although this breed prefers a human companion

dose this breed grow that big or is this a big ass dog
warhero40000 2 years ago
Don't know if the owner has replied by mail or not so here you go.
Leonbergers get to about 32' at the shoulders and can come in at about 60-70kg (more or less).
That brute looks like a big one compared to some of the ones I have seen. The father of our pup was massive as well.

@warhero40000 yes it generally does

@BuckeyeNation1807 They are legal everywhere. They were used as load and pull dogs, but some also guarded the property (that kinda sneaked in).

@Alishondra these lies just come out your ass? they were bread to look like a lion by some mayor in the UK
wormmy158 1 year ago
@wormmy158 No, they're not. And our family has leonbergers for over 10 years so we know where they come from and you obviously don't.

@wormmy158 they were originally bred to look like a lion by a mayor in the town of leonberg in germany, not in the u.k. ( google on wikipedia)
