The French never even fully committed their air force to the battle.

It is not very surprising France lost so easy in 1940. The Liberals in France had spent years trying not to annoy Germany and many of the right wing admired Hitler. It is not very surprising France lost so easy in 1940. The Liberals in France had spent years trying not to annoy Germany and many of the right wing admired Hitler. The communists also were told not to antagonise or criticise Nazi Germany by their controllers in Moscow since the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop non-aggression pact between Germany and the USSR. So, like I said, France was ripe for the picking.

Not to mention that many of them were still traumatized from the enormous losses France suffered in WW I, just barely twenty years before 1939. Their military tactics were outdated, and their generals had this WW I mentality, into thinking that this would be another trench warfare.
The Germans were ready for a new, and more aggressive war this time, and their commanders were young, capable, and very smart.

Yes you are broadly right. But I think that German blitzkrieg warfare owed a lot to the thinking of the British soldier JFC Fuller whose works were avidly read by the Germans. The Brits lacked the money and moreover the will to implement a fully and properly mechanised army based on tanks whereas of course the Germans had no such problems. Actually, the Maginot Line did its job since the Germans did have to go round it, through Belgium where the frontier was not fortified!

Yes, it is hard to believe that many intelligent people were duped into thinking Hitler could be reasoned with and that his aims were anything other than continental domination. Of course, we know a lot more about the 3rd Reich now than they did in 1939 so we have the benfit of hindsight. Nevertheless, they didn't factor in the possibility that Hitler was nuts.

It was so weak and small amount of troops. Certainly no elite troops at all in that border. My guess is that they belived belgians would put breaks on german advance just like happend the last time in WW1. Certainly french leaders should have understood that it was a different situation than in 1914. If Germany crushed Poland so easily what made Paris think Belgium could hold them.

When Germany anounced in 1935 that they had started an air force this should have alarmed Paris. The tactical out-of-dateness was mainly because they thought if Germany attacked through the Low Countries trench warfare would develop. Some like de Gaulle attempted maneuver warfare with tanks but in the end it was the uncoordinated and unprepared French Air Force which cost them the war.

At the begining of 1942 they also took about half of million soviet POWs. Yes Stalingrad was bad but only 90 000 germans surrendered. I bet most of them either died while escaping in Siberia or by their own hands. German was simply a better soldier than russians, americans and brits combined.

Well i don't know if your story is real or not, but my great-grand father did fight in the Eastern Front against the Russians, he respected the Russian army a lot many German soldiers and officers were angered when they were told that Wehrmacht will attack Russia. Because many Germans made friends in Russia 1939-1941.

The Nazi scientists would never have built such a bomb, it cost too much to make, Germany did not have the money for such a bomb,it cost $2 billion to build - that's about 20 billion of dollars in today's money! Germans were more interested in pathetic V2 rockets and fancy tanks, no wonder the Germans lost the war!

@StellandBlood You are a waste of time , because don't know the facts,the car was a French invention, Benz copied the idea and used gas instead,the tank was a British invention, the first flight was American, (the Wright brothers)the German tanks had thicker armour, the American and Brits had the tech. to reinforce their tanks, but instead opted for quantity of tanks not quality, which was time comsuming in the rush to win the war. The Russians opted for quantity and it paid: WE WON THE WAR!

The tank projects were parallel,if the first working tank was french or british isn´t really know,this question is therefore insignificant.
Lets go to the figures,what really matters,in the western front french had a army of 8 mil troops,British troops in France never exceeded 2 Mil,and the americans never exceeded 600 000 men,and just part of them were battle ready,and for most of their intervention they had secondary roles.

If Britain joined in an arms race with Germany in the 1930s, the Germans would never have defeated Britain in 1940....as it was, Britain spent the 1930s appeasing Hitler!!! The Wehrmacht (German Army) hated nazis and the Waffen SS and it was full of officers trying to kill hitler. I have even talked to German veterans who were nothing near a nazi or ever were.
